BOX OFFICE: X-MEN: DOFP Opens Big! Could Beat WINTER SOLDIER's 3-Day Total

The biggest opening of 2014 belongs to Captain America: The Winter Soldier with $95 million, but based on thursday and friday numbers 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past will top Marvel Studios latest offering. Come check it out.

Deadline reports: Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past pulled in $36M on Friday at the North American box office. Add in $8.1M from Thursday night and the film is now on pace for "$97M+ 3-day gross." As long as the film doesn't drop more than 10% on Saturday and Sunday X-Men: DOFP will eclipse the 2014 3-day record Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier set with $95M. For comparison: Legendary/WB's Godzilla had the second best 2014 3-day opening with $93M and Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is currently third with $91M. Factoring in Monday, which is Memorial Day, X-Men: Days of Future Past is on pace for "a $117M to $120M 4-day gross." If that holds up, the film would "end up in the top five highest-grossing films ever during the Memorial Day weekend." Current Memorial Day Weekend Top 5: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007, $139.8 million), Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008, $126.9 million), X-Men: Last Stand (2006, $122.8 million), Fast & Furious 6 (2013, $117 million) and The Hangover 2 (2011, $103.4 million).

Word-of-mouth should give the new X-Men film legs for the coming weeks as audiences have bestowed it with a strong 'A' CinemaScore. By the way, what's making these numbers so remarkable is that X-Men: DOFP didn't have the benefit of IMAX screenings as Godzilla is occupying at the moment. Don't feel too bad as the film "is showing on 352 large format screens provided by other exhibitors."

Meanwhile, in its second weekend, Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla is expected to drop over 60% … maybe 63% … that hurts. However, the monster will have made about $160M domestically in two weeks time compared to Sony/Marvel’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which will have made around $187M in four weeks.

Sony has to be mighty worried about the domestic box office trend of their Spider-Man films - each film has underperformed the last. Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man kicked things off with  $403M domestically, Spider-Man 2 did $373.5M, Spider-Man 3 did $336.5M and Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man grossed $262M.

I think saying X-Men: Days of Future Past is better than The Winter Soldier or The Dark Knight is like saying Casino is better than Goodfellas. They are just different movies in the same genre (respectively) that are equally satisfying.

This was the best X-Men movie to me. I didn't get to see the end-credit teaser, because I had to go get my daughter, but I did see the bootleg on Youtube. I need to see the whole movie again, because I think I missed some info. It was so plot-filled, which is so great about it. A few things...

(Spoilers)
When Wolverine returns to the future, he still has grey hair, but everyone else looks normal. Is that just an artistic thing?

Why does Rogue have that white strand of hair? Shouldn't it be gone, since X1 no longer exists? Is this also just an artistic thing?

The new Wolverine technically died the moment the old Wolverine woke up in that new future. That's kind of disturbing.

If Mystique is pretending to be Striker, how does Wolverine get his adamantium? This seems to indicate that the whole Weapon X program was done completely differently.

Wolverine, Storm, Scott, and Jean will now join the X-Men at an earlier date, since Xavier will now be looking for them.

Are Emma and Banshee truly dead? That seems like an odd thing to do and we only saw Angel S. and Azazel's bodies.

And here's the big one...

Did Mistyque have a relationship with Azazel? There's a scene in the airport where she's talking to Magneto and she starts to talk about how Trask murdered someone. She was really broken up about it, but he cut her off. This whole desire to kill Trask seems like it's a revenge plot for killing one person in particular and not all those other mutants from the first film. Since we know Nightcrawler is in the next film, could we see that relationship acknowledged on screen?

Good. I hope it does. Because I know some people on here actually care about this Fox/Marvel Studios shit and would be pissed off by it.

And that makes me happy. :)

Dofp should do more than X3. That movie came 8 years ago. If this movie having Lawrence, Fassbender, Jackman, Stewart, McKellen, Dinklage... +3D doesnt do more than that mediocre film... it will be surreal

It is sad to see that these fox-men haters CAN NOT use the RottenTomatoes' rating to bash the movie.

At this point, they just want the rating to drop lower than CAP 2.
