In the same way that comic fans were blown away by the compelling story and gory visuals of the original 300 comic books, movie fans were enthralled by the Zack Snyder-helmed film version when it was released in March 2007.
In fact, the film became the highest-grossing March-release film in history with $70,885,301 earned and still holds the top spot for a Spring release film.
300 went on to earn $456,068,181 worldwide and launched the careers of both Snyder and Gerard Butler, who captivated us as King Leonidas.
In Hollywood, those kinds of numbers can only mean one thing…sequel!
So, where is it? According to a recent interview, Snyder confirmed that he has had conversations with Frank Miller, writer/artist of the original
300 mini-series, and that the sequel will be based upon a follow-up graphic novel, which Miller will create. Snyder said that he will have no input into Miller’s graphic novel—and doesn’t want any—and that the story will take place between the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea.
Fans of the film will remember that Dilios (played by David Wenham) tells the story of King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans’ fall to a throng of soldiers to inspire them to victory:
"And so my king died, and my brothers died, barely a year ago. Long I pondered my king's cryptic talk of victory. Time has proven him wise, for from free Greek to free Greek, the word was spread that bold Leonidas and his three hundred, so far from home, laid down their lives. Not just for Sparta, but for all Greece and the promise this country holds. Now, here on this ragged patch of earth called Plataea, Xerxes's hordes face obliteration!"
Snyder has said that he
will be directing the sequel and that he eagerly anticipates Miller’s graphic novel.
