Sony's planned reboot of Charlie's Angels may have found the third and final member of its all-female team of crime-fighters, as That Hashtag Show reports that Naomi Scott (Power Rangers, Disney's upcoming Aladdin remake) has joined the cast.

It's been a while since we had any updates on this one, but apparently both Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther) are still on board as the other Angels.

Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect 3) will direct while also taking on the role of Bosley, and production is expected to commence in Berlin this September.

Charlie's Angels is currently set for release on June 7, 2019.

@knocturnalzen10 - i wouldn't mind if they'd make kind of F&F style.. make it a serious action film, with some funny moments/laughs thrown in.. not a comedy with a little action sprinkled on. original Charlie's Angels was not a comedy sitcom, but i guess hollywood doesn't realize that, or just doesn't care

@knocturnalzen10 - On the one hand, I hear you.

On the other hand, it's a dream come true for genre fans. Big chunks of studio Hollywood history has been uninterested in adapting established material, outside a few historical/Biblical epics which were largely an excuse for sex and violence that exceeded the boundaries of the Hays Code and a best-selling detective novel or two. Oh, and plays. Lots of plays.

Instead, Hollywood treated storytelling as if it were plucked from the muses themselves fully formed, or merely grunt work.

But (here's my perspective now) creativity is cumulative. It's definitely possible to create a great film from scratch, but having an established resource to adapt from frees up a lot of creative energy to hone, refine, and potentially comment on or subvert that material.

That's why (as great as this era has been for Marvel specifically), we should all be aware that this is probably a singular moment in cinema where Hollywood is chugging its way through 80 years of longboxes for really the first time, and it's also likely to be the last time. Once they've made their first real pass at these characters, those movies are going to dwarf the original comics in the culture's mind, as well as any future filmmaker. This is it.

What will come later will in general be even more derivative and contrived. And Hollywood and TV studios have been mining classic television for the same reason. So many series passed without commentary, popular or unpopular. This is an opportunity to use that material as a resource.

Because right now, there is so much creativity outside of established cinema that is being wasted (if that's the right word for something never becoming a movie). "Pristine" may be equally valid. In any case, if we want good movies then this process helps to make good movies possible, and more likely than the harder work of "coming up with something new" (which is not in itself an uncontroversial phrase).
