Karate Kid Movie Trailer!

Karate Kid Movie Trailer!

Legionnaires Rejoice!

...Ooops sorry guys, wrong Karate Kid but this trailer is still very cool though. We have the Spawn of "Hancock" himself on the titular role, and we have Jackie "I don't need any stunt double" Chan as the mentor.

Some things bothers me, the title itself, it would have been ok if they called it Kung Fu Kid, as Karate is Japanese but then again it has its roots in China.

Another is I really miss Mr. Miyagi but then again if you have a replacement why not have Jackie Chan right.

I think I'll enjoy this movie, this coming of age stories if done right really does have that ability to pull your heart strings.

I'm glad it's not a straight remake, I love the original. This one looks ok and with Jackie Chan it has a chance.

the trailer is actually good the only thing i dont like is the name it should be called The Kung Fu Kid. i remember on Jackie Chan website he called it The Kung Fu Kid and when Will Smith was in the UK he had an interview and he called it The Kung Fu Kid. i guess its the film studio want to market the movie with the title "The Karate Kid".

@InSpace

how this ruined the original. the original always be there to watch this wont effect it at all. the only problem is the title of the movie it does not match the concept of the movie oh well it is Hollywood.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/22/2009, 6:28 PM
I had no idea this movie was so close to coming out.

At any rate how can we say it ruined the original when we have yet to see the movie? I mean the trailer gives us very little to go on.
On the subject of karate and kung fu, I don't think it matters that much that karate isn't Chinese just because the movie takes place there. I mean at that rate you'd have to complain that the original should have been called the Boxing Kid or something like that as karate isn't indigenous to America.

I'm not speaking from experience, as I've never been to China, but I'm fairly certain that although karate didn't originate there that it is practiced there in many places today just as it is practiced all over the world.

jazzman - 12/22/2009, 6:36 PM
@thwhtGuardian

but Jackie Chan is well known for Kung Fu and he teaching Jaden Kung Fu. and yes Karate Kid was set in America but the teacher was japanese and he teach his student Karate. so that Boxing Kid comment is invalid to be honest thwhtGuardian.

im not saying this trailer is bad i think its good to be honest but in china is well known for Kung Fu. its be taught at school in china.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/22/2009, 6:45 PM
Jakie Chan might be well known for Kung Fu and so might China but this is meant to be another part of the franchise of Karate Kid. By that fact alone the other things don't matter. I mean, it's a movie Jakie Chan isn't the kid's teacher, he's an actor playing the kid's teacher so the fact that he's a Kung Fu master is irrelevant, if the character is a karate teacher that's what he is...and karate is practiced in china.
jazzman

@thwhtGuardian

Jackie Chan character is a kung fu teacher. and Jaden in the movie is doing Kung Fu moves it wont make sense to call the movie Karate Kid while the whole thing is Kung Fu.

"Jackie Chan character is a kung fu teacher. and Jaden in the movie is doing Kung Fu moves it wont make sense to call the movie Karate Kid while the whole thing is Kung Fu."

That's true, but when it comes down to it, the majority of people don't know the difference between Karate and Kung Fu.Also, I gotta think the studio went with "Karate Kid" because it is already recognizable.

thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/22/2009, 7:12 PM
yeah kenny, that's true, I mean I sure as heck can't tell the difference. Karate, Kung Fu, to the average viewer it's all the same.
jazzman
jazzman - 12/22/2009, 7:13 PM
good thing about this movie is that Jaden is actually been taught by a real martial artist Jackie Chan who actually is from China and his English has a real accent. the original Karate Kid movie did not have a real martial artist Pat Morita aka Mr. Miyagi do not know karate and he spoke perfect English cause he was born in America.

@kenny38606

"the majority of people don't know the difference between Karate and Kung Fu"

thats might be true but the problem is people cant forget that the movie is starring Jackie Chan who is famous for Kung Fu movies. if Jackie Chan was a unknown actor people wont really care but his too recognizable for Kung Fu movies its hard for people to forget.

whats next another remake of Karate Kid set in Thailand starring Tony Jaa and a random kid. but the kid learns Muay Thai from Tony Jaa character but the movie will be called The Karate Kid instead.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/22/2009, 7:24 PM
I don't think most people know the difference though jazzman. It's all the same to most people, kung fu, karate, jujitsu, it doesn't matter what you call it the average person is just going to assume it's the same. And most people don't know Jackie Chan is doing Kung Fu, ask a bunch a people on the street I bet they'd think it was karate because that's the more familiar word.

I'm gonna have to agree with thwhtGuardian, most don't know the difference, and most think "Karate" just means Martial Arts...
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/22/2009, 7:41 PM
They know Jackie Chan, but I bet that they couldn't tell you he practices kung fu, I'd bet they'd say karate. It's more well known, and if in the movie they say that he's doing karate nobody is going to question it. I mean look at the ninja turtles they're supposed to be masters of ninjitsu...has anybody ever questioned that in all of the mediums they have appeared in they don't fight in any recognizable style? Nobody criticizes the cartoons or the live action movies lack of martial arts skills, the movie states that they are doing martial arts so to the audience that's what they're doing no matter how wrong it is.

So if Jackie Chan's character says he's doing karate nobody is going to question it unless they are an expert...and they will make up an extreme minority of the audience.

Soooooo... the kid's is CHINA. The 'Miyagi' character is CHINESE. He's OBVIOUSLY teaching the kid KUNG FU (or GUNG-FU, depending on where you're from - LOL. Anyone notice the WING CHUNG dummy in the background?), and it's called 'KARATE Kid'... WHY? Do the studios think the public is THAT stupid?

Why the hell would a poor single black mother move to China?

This movie is a pathetic attempt by Will Smith to get his son to break into the movie business. This is more pathetic than Ashley Simpson or Kelly Ozborne.

...and Guardian, Karate is practiced in China as much as Cricket is played professionally in the USA (which is a shame 'cause it's a brilliant sport, but that's a different thread).

"Karate International China was one of the six original national members of the Karate conglomerate Karate International, along with Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the United States Of America.

The Chinese wing is by far the largest section of Karate International, sending a delegation of 156 members to the 2005 Annual International Tournament. The Chinese team took first place in 24 of the 56 divisions, with 73 places in total."

So it would seem to be a little more popular than the American Cricket league. I don't mean to sound uppity, I just like to have a little research to go along with what I say. I'm in no way an expert in martial arts, I really can't tell the difference between the styles, nor do I really care what the differences are in the movies I watch. Like I said, Splinter says his sons are trained ninja warriors and that's enough for me. I don't care if they're not standing right, or if their arms are at the right positions,, in the movies and comics it's stated that they are experts so I accept that. Like wise if Jackie Chan's character says he's a karate master and that he's going to teach lil' smith karate I'm going to accept that he's doing just that.

@Jusme6: I think you are out of your mind when it comes to Will Smith. He had a fresh look on Karate Kid and he used his son, which has been in films before, so no break in needed, "Pursuit of happiness".

I think that this Movie is a fresh look at the Karate Kid elements of the new generation to appeal to a wider audience. I think this movie will be great and especially love them using Jackie Chan.

I didnt see anything in that 2min clip to suggest he's some thug or gangster as you put it.

I trained for years when I lived in Hawaii picking up a few techiques from both Karate and Kung fu. I'd have to argee by the kids hand movements in its circular type motions it's Kung fu NOT KARATE. Karate has more of a straight forward attacking type style where as Kung Fu is more defensive almost like a dance.

I didnt like any of the Karate kid movies the guy looked stiff and you could tell he had never fought a day in his life. This story line seems somewhat lame also like the first one ,but the kid actually looks like Jackie might have trained him up a bit. I'll wait to check it out before I pass judgement.

your a idiot cause the kid is black his a gangsta. so every black person is a gangsta now then.

also how the hell its raping your childhood. their is people who actually got raped out of their childhood using rape for a freaking movie is completely stupid.

@thwhtGuardian

the movie should be called The Kung Fu it was mention on Jackie Chan website and Will Smith even said it in the UK. plus alot of young people even now the difference between karate and kung fu.

if they did more remake of The Karate Kid with different martial art style and similar storyline and keep the same title The Karate Kid it would be stupid i.e.

1- a young kid who gets bullied and end up been trained by a old man who teach the kid Capoeira. the movie will be called "The Karate Kid"

2 - a young kid who gets bullied and end up been trained by a old man who teach the kid Ninjutsu. guess what the movie will be called "The Karate Kid"

2 - a young kid who gets bullied and end up been trained by a old man who teach the kid Muay Thai. hold what should we call that movie "The Karate Kid".

thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/23/2009, 1:09 PM
The thing is though most movie goers aren't going to know the difference between those three, even the young people. Unless they are actually skilled in either kung fu or karate most people don't know the difference.So then it comes down to context if the characters say it's karate then the audience is going to take their word for, like wise if they say they're doing some other form then they'll believe them.

Do you hear anyone complaining that the ninja turtles don't really look like they're Ninjutsu masters? No. They say the are so the audience believes them. Same thing here, if chan's character says he's doing karate no one is going to question it.
jazzman

how the ninja turtles get into this. first of they are mutants they aint real people. the ninja turtles got a backstory about them learning Ninjutsu, also the ninja turtles uses Ninja weapons, they know how to be stealth thats whats part of been a ninja, also they called Ninja Turtles cause they Ninjas.

so you telling me this movie should be called The Karate Kid even tho they do Kung Fu. that mean the film studio saying the the general public are so dumb that we can call anything we want to sale to you guys even tho we got the culture wrong and martial art style in the movie wrong too.

jusme6
jusme6 - 12/23/2009, 1:44 PM
@JonMyers: Yes he's been in 2 movies and I'm sure he will be in many many more. He might even turn out to be a great actor. It does irritate me that Will Smith probably came up with the ridiculous story line for this movie, just so he could insert his son as the sympathetic protagonist in this movie. Fresh look? Lets hope so.

looks cool and the music goes good with the trailer
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 12/23/2009, 2:09 PM
The thing is though jazzman is they're never seen using any fighting styles even close to ninjutsu, they have the weapons and they disappear and they say they are trained in the arts of ninjutsu so we believe them. Same thing with any other movie, Obi-Wan is said to be an expert swordsmen...yet his techniques in the movies are painfully elementary but we don't care because in the context of the movie he's supposed to be great so we believe he is. It's the magic of cinema, you buy into what they say is real without question, so like I said if Chan's character says he's doing karate than the regular public won't question it.

And, atleast in the field of martial arts, yes the general public is woefully ignorant. And there's nothing wrong with that, in this part of the world martial arts aren't part of the common knowledge, that's just a fact of life. Only a small percentage of the audience will realize that Chan isn't doing karate, just like only a small percentage knew that Obi-Wan was far from a swords master. When you watch a movie you have to buy into it's world and play by its rules, that's how it works.
