TOP GUN: MAVERICK Jets To Memorial Day While MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 Cruises To Fall 2022

Disappointing midweek news here, as it looks like Paramount and Tom Cruise have decided to punt on 2021, moving Top Gun: Maverick to Memorial Day 2022 and pushing back Mission: Impossible 7 to Fall 2022.

Breaking news off the Paramount lot, as Deadline has learned that the studio has pushed upcoming Tom Cruise-fronted action blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick from this November to May 27, 2022.

The ongoing pandemic has also resulted in them moving another Cruise-led actioner, the hotly-awaited Mission: Impossible 7, from that aforementioned Memorial Day date to September 30, 2022, which means we'll be getting a double dose of TC next year.

Meanwhile, Jackass Forever has been moved to February 4, 2022.

While undoubtedly disappointing, the decision was not entirely unexpected, especially with the global box office still in recovery mode and the increasing threat of the Delta variant keeping people at home. However, with theater attendance expected to be much improved next year (potentially even nearing pre-pandemic levels), this did make the most business sense for two of their biggest blockbusters of the year.

For the time being, Mission: Impossible 8 is still slated to arrive in theaters on July 7, 2023, but that's also likely subject to change depending on the film's upcoming production schedule. With MI7 on the verge of wrapping, MI8 should kickstart production after a short hiatus at the tail-end of this calendar year, if not early next.

On a related note, there's buzz that Top Gun: Maverick ejecting out of 2021 could result in Sony slotting their upcoming superhero vehicle Venom: Let There Be Carnage into that now-vacant November 19th date, which would move it out of the October logjam, which has MGM's No Time to Die (October 8), Universal's Halloween (October 15), and Warner Bros.' Dune (October 22) opening in consecutive weeks. Of course, the biggest downside there is that taking it into later this year would put it even closer to Sony's magnum opus Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it'll be interesting to see whether Sony would be keen on dropping two of their potential billion-dollar blockbusters within a span of a month.

UPDATE: Following Paramount's moves, Sony has pushed Ghostbusters: Afterlife back one week to November 19. Venom: Let There Be Carnage is staying in October.

One day, Tom Cruise is probably going die while doing a stunt on Mission Impossible 15. And that's probably the exact way he would like to go.

@Odin - I hope he does the space station stunt and purposely disconnects his life line to just float off into space whilst flipping off the camera.

@Odin - I feel like that’s 40% of why I keep watching these movies because elf the behind the scenes stunt stuff lol At this point Tom Cruise doing crazy stuff that gets him hurt and potentially killed is a big part of the discussion around them

At this point we'll never see these [frick]in movies. Just close down theaters and let people pay to stream it since everyone is still scared that their shadow might give them covid.

I still wonder how Haylee Atwell could have shot both Mission Impossible and Doctor Strange at the same time, unless her role in Doctor Strange is smaller than we anticipate.

@Amuro - Well, to be fair, it's still a rumor at that point.

This is to be expected and I'm not the least big surprised. Shang Chi will be the last "in theaters only" sacrificial lamb. Expect a combination of three things happening when Shang Chi underperforms: 1) a mass exodus to 2022, 2) a MUCH shorter than 45 days theater window, (they're already doing that now with some releases, some not even being in theaters 3 weeks before they hit PVOD) and 3) day and date releases on streaming. This is the world we live in now. Get used to it.

@BecauseICare - you're very confident that it will underperform

@ThorArms - Only based upon the climate right now. Not saying it's a bad movie. In fact, from everything I've read it looks like a really good movie. I'm just saying based upon everything that's happened up to this point concerning COVID, I'd be VERY surprised if it doesn't underperform. I don't have a crystal ball to see in the future and I hope I'm wrong. But I have the sneaking suspicion I'm right. We'll see...

Never seen Top Gun, was probably going to watch it before this movie came out, but I’m in no rush.

I hope Venom stays right where it is and I think it should. Moving closer to another superhero movie probably isn’t smart. And there might be a bit of a logjam but I don’t think Venom is the one to be worried and blink.
