OLDBOY Screenwriter Mark Protosevitch On The Challenge Of Writing MASS EFFECT

In 2011, Legendary Pictures hired Mark Protosevitch to write the feature film adaptation of BioWare's highly successful space-epic, Mass Effect, however the challenge of doing so was so hard that Protosevitch won't adapt any video games!

Talking to Badass Digest at a recent press junket for Oldboy, the site asked Protosevitch about his version of Mass Effect and what Legendary Pictures wanted from the film, stating that "When I was on it I was definitely adapting the first game. That story, it was very much the first game. And that was the approach."

The site also pegged him for information on the movie; revealing that it would be an almost-strict adaptation for the first video game, but he was also relieved when the studio brought in a new writer for the project. Protosevitch said that "It was the first game adaptation I did and it will probably be the only one. They’re hard. I will freely admit it was hard.".

It's also no secret that the narrative of Mass Effect set a high standard for video games, with each game consisting of dozens of hours of content and plot/character developed. Protosevitch noted this, saying "With Mass Effect - there’s just so much material. Narratively, with the game, you’re talking about nine, ten hours of narrative you’re jamming into two hours."

Do you guys think a Mass Effect movie could work at all?

@Jazza815, as long as they don't land on the Syfy channel it could work. If AMC, HBO, or, Showtime could adapt the mini series it could work out famously...

@Gusto, damn right. Dead Space could be amazing too...

Dead Space was made for film.
Totally could be as cool and creepy as the original Alien film if done right.

We need some good sci-fi horror.

ME was a great storyline. As unique as is was, I feel like the studios would turn out something to similar to Babylon Five and totally neglect the real reasons we love the game. Almost for the same reason a GL movie failed, the financial resources required to properly create multiple alien worlds, races, technologies etc, and then create epic space battles using all of that is just too expensive.

I agree on Dead Space. There are a lot of similar space stories out there that echo ME, but Dead Space could be the "Alien" for a new generation. I'm surpized it hasn't been developed yet as it fuses aliens, zombies, gore, ghosts and haunted houses into one terrifying mess of awesomeness. I still get nervous playing the games.

Pandorum had the right idea, but then went in different direction and actually had a really smart story... thye introduced the mutated/evolved humans as a suspenseful horror element and then let it fall flat. By the end, they seemed more like a plot device for pacing when the story behind their condition was very cool.

They should make it with FemShep.

A TV series would be a better fit for something like Mass Effect, but a movie could work, if you get the right people.

I say get Drew Goddard to Direct and possibly help with the script as well.

To be honest, Mass Effect has to be at LEAST 4 movies. Say what you want about the end of Mass Effect 3, but the game as a whole wrapped up a lot of the main issues in the Mass Effect universe.

The Turian-Krogan conflict, Quarian-Geth conflict, Cerberus, etc. The third Mass Effect alone, has to be two movies in order to work.

The biggest problem, besides the aforementioned difficulty of fitting in all those hours into a film, is that each player essentially wrote their own version when making their choices.
It's not like adapting a comic, where a few minor changes aside, it's still pretty much recognisable.

I mean, i still have a hard time looking at promotional shots from the games because i don't recognise the bald space marine they're calling Shepard!

TV series would be better suited due to the amount of plot, and character development in the games.

If it does go ahead, then they better sort out the ending on 3.

If done right, Mass Effect would be THE greatest SciFi movie ever! No ifs ands or buts about it! Damn I love me some Mass Effect and some Shepard!!!!! an Wrex, and Garrus, and the rest... Including my love Liara!

Trying to adapt one of the plots of the games would not work as a movie. Now trying something completely new that exists besides the game, I think that's the better approach for a movie.

No he doesn't. You just see the abdomen portion of the N7 armor rise as Shepard draws in a breath.

Anyways, I'd probably go see it anyway, even if I knew it would be crap. I've been living and breathing Mass Effect since the second game came out - it's the reason I got an Xbox 360. But I'm sure it'll be bad. There's so much they would have to leave out, and they wouldn't just snip it from the story - they'd likely change the story around, which would be even worse.

It could be as bad as the Last Airbender, but I'd probably still see it.

MAss Effect would make such an awesome movie, my favourite universe ever created

Dead Space is too deriative to make a good movie out of it IMO

If they do end up adapting the story of the games, they're gonna have to change the ending by the time they get around to the third one, given how illogical and stupid it is.

I loved Mass Effect. I liked Mass Effect 2. I didn't like Mass Effect 3 a lot.

Mass Effect movies that are directly adapting one version of the story of the games seem pretty pointless to me.

If you want to adapt the game, then it should be a series. If you want to do something based on the game in the Mass Effect universe, then you are easily able to do a movie.

I say stay away from Shepeard because fans have their own version of the character.

@DudeGuyMan I like that idea...but sort of in reverse.

I'm thinking that having Mass Effect 1&2 should be the TV series, and then Mass Effect 3 be the movie (or movies).

They could split each game into two movies: have one hit in the spring and the other in the fall. Personally, I'd be super bold and make three movies out of each and have them released in the spring, summer and fall... but I'm a maniac and don't have the burdens of running a studio and their finances to rein in my desires.

My perfect world scenario is not only do you film each as two-three movies, but you have both a male and female Shep version where they make different choices. They'd shoot simultaneously with the same cast, so just the leads would switch out. This could mean a lot of the same scenes with secondary characters could be reused, same for effects shots. Shepards could have different origins and specialties, and one would save Kaiden and the other Ash. It would be a really bold endeavor to try to film... which is why the studio would never do it. This is why I buy lottery tickets when they're over 300 million. If I won, my first step would be contacting the producing company and Bioware and tell them I'll significantly fund an expanded version of what they're doing (in exchange for some kind of revenue sharing of course).

I would say tv series since there's way too much source material.

But hey, a Deadspace movie would be awesome.

When they do the marketing for the cinema-release, they should do concessions food and drink containers in three different varieties of colours. Of course it doesn't make any difference to which you buy....

I always pick Synthesis. I'm a pussy, I guess, but I can't bring myself to kill EDI.

A television show might not be a bad idea, but I'd be worried about what the krogan would look like. Even then, it'd still be better than completely eliminating the quarians like they had said they would do.
GetsugaTensho22
GetsugaTensho22 - 10/5/2013, 8:01 AM
Oh phooey, the endings to ME3 Were perfectly fine. The flaws that do lie with them lie squarely because of the open ended nature of the games. It's really REALLY hard to keep track of all the thousands of choices that players make and incorporate that into a proper ending.

Still, it is a bummer that regardless of choice, it's still a happy ending. I chose the ending i did after weighing the options and thinking about it. Later i found out that had i gone another route, it would still have been a happy ending. Disappointed with that.
GetsugaTensho22
GetsugaTensho22 - 10/5/2013, 8:03 AM
@Tainted87: Synthesis, eh? I don't know of many people who pick that.

It's Destroy, for me. I always look at it this way.
Saren = fusion, synthesis of a new breed. But it's not real..it's stagnation, it's the complete loss of choice.

Illusive Man = control, or the illusion of it. Controlling the reapers is not possible and will lead to oblivion.

@GT22 I always pick destroy, because I believe in the end, they can always rebuild EDI and the Geth, and since Destroy is the one ending where you don't die, It seems a bit easy to pick.
