Ok, I realize that a Spaghetti West..eh, Southern is not exactly our usual coverage here on CBM. But, a new Tarantino flick gives cause for geeks the world over to unite in excitement. Plus, his latest project is courting some big names, most of whom have starred in CBMs. With Will Smith being one of the world's biggest stars and a veteran of many genres, we feel that a potential team up with QT is worth brining to you CBMers attention..

From THR..

Will Smith has emerged as the frontrunner to star in Quentin Tarantino’s next film, Django Unchained, a spaghetti Western about a slave in the Old South who teams with a German bounty hunter to search for his wife.

Tarantino stalwarts Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz also are circling key parts.

Yes, Samuel "Nick Fury" Jackson alongside Waltz(The Green Hornet) and Will Smith(Men In Black, Hancock). Sounds like it could be something very special indeed. Although none of this is set in stone, THR reckon no official offer has been made to Smith.

They also have some more info on the parts the actors may play..

Smith is being teed up for the title role of Django, a freed slave who seeks to reunite with his slave wife, a journey that will see him team with a German bounty hunter to take down an evil plantation owner.

Tarantino wrote the bounty hunter part with Waltz in mind, according to insiders. The German ends up training Django and helping him seek his wife.

Jackson would play the house slave to the bad guy, Monsieur Calvin Candie. The slave is an expert manipulator and will face off with Django.

There's more too. Variety somewhat contradictorily report that Smith HAS been informally offered the role and is interested, apparently willing to forgo his usual mammoth fee too. They also say that both Bradd Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio turned down roles in the movie.

@grif there are not enough facepalms within christendom to account for your last comment

I'd rather see Don Cheadle or Denzel Washington in this, but Will Smith wouldn't suck.

Sounds cool but i would rather see Chiwetel Ejiofor, Denzel Washington or Djimon Hounsou as Django! Those guys would be great! Or Idris Elba!

Wonder who they will get as the main baddie?

Gary Oldman would be cool!:) Or John Malkovich!
And Tim Roth as the right hand man! He always plays great baddies!

django is white!
and was imortalized by Franco Nero in several spaghetiwesterns.
what is this fixation to make westerns movies whit Bigwilly playing a character thats is suposed to be white.
runing a lighthearted series like wildwild west(and showing us smiths nuts)was not enough?

@ konoyaro

They're not having Smith (assuming he's cast) playing the exact same character. This isn't a remake.

@whoa123

how Will Smith dont fit in a QT movie. Mike Myers was in Inglourious Basterds. i believe it would be very interesting that Will Smith does this role.

Will Smith in a Tarantino movie could be interesting, and Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson, this movie sounds awesome Tarantino never disappoints.

I think a lot of actors chomp at the bit to do these off the beaten path films. Eventhough Tarantino is very embraced by the mainstream, he still embodies indy cinema. Look at people like Pitt and Kurt Russell, they shine in these type of films and it gives them major street cred. I think Smith would do anything to get out of the shadow of his kids right now.
