FROZEN 3D Review; "A Beautifully Animated And Smartly Written Movie"

Frozen is another movie which you may have to try and rush out to see before The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, but if you have the time, it's well-worth making the effort! Hit the jump for my spoiler-free verdict on the Disney flick that many have declared 2013's best animated release!

As I said roughly this time last year when I reviewed Rise of the Guardians, I'm really not a huge fan of animated movies. Apart from the majority of Pixar's releases and a select few others, not many of them would ever find a place in my list of all-time favourites. However, it's Christmas, so a seasonal movie like Frozen seemed well-worth giving a chance. I'm glad I did, and not just because of the superb Mickey Mouse short which was shown beforehand!

As it turns out, Frozen is a beautifully animated and smartly written movie which will appeal to the grown-ups just as much the kids. It is in fact so good, you could easily be fooled into thinking it was made by Pixar if you missed the opening titles! The basic premise - which you can get a general idea of in the synopsis below - could have very easily led to it being an extremely predictable and by the numbers animated feature, but it exceeds expectations by focusing on a unique and extremely realistic group of characters rather than the clichéd and over-the-top two dimensional bores we're so used to seeing.

This is helped a great deal by the voice cast, even if it does consist of actors you've probably never heard of (apart from Kristen Bell of course, who is excellent). Regardless, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad and Santino Fontana all deserve a mention as they're each easily as superb, and the musical numbers are all performed excellently by each of them. They're catchy, help to tell the story and are thankfully spaced out enough to never become tedious. Going for Broadway talent over A-List celebrities was definitely a smart choice!

Ultimately, Frozen is just an awful lot of fun, with a great message for kids and an engrossing story which will leave you baffled by how quickly the 90 minute runtime flies by. Anna and Elsa are two worthy additions to Disney's long list of Princesses, while supporting characters like Olaf the snowman and Sven the Reindeer ensure that there's plenty to enjoy here for both sexes. Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee have delivered a must-see movie which is essential viewing this holiday season. Oh, and the 3D also happens to be pretty excellent; a true rarity these days.

Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind "Tangled" and "Wreck-It Ralph," presents "Frozen," a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey—teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven—to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

Frozen is fantastic! If this is truly a Disnet Animation resurgence then I can't wait to see what Marvel/Disney does with Big Hero 6. I have a feeling that will be the Comic Book Movie of the year!

Absolutely fantastic movie. I don't hold much reverence for Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast etc., but this is absolutely one of the best movies they've ever done. Amazing work.

Great movie - one note about your review -

Elsa is a queen, not a princess. An important distinction!

I went to see it with my brother and mother and I had a better time watching it then watching when watching Thor.

Are you all nuts? This movie was barely watchable. The first half of the show drug on incredibly slow. And the story overall was just a new version of "Tangled" but with snow. Horrible
Oh, and the snowman they spent so much time on in the commercials, was extremely annoying and in your face.

Just how big a role has the "hilarious" snowman? I really want to watch this, but based on the trailers the snowman seems like the paragon of all the things I don't like about funny Disney sidekicks. :/

I expected to hate the movie but it ends up more a Picard movie than Disney. Great movie.

@indoorsman

well...she was a princess before she became a queen but that's like arguing that all toes are fingers but not all fingers are toes.

The movie was enjoying and I thought it moved well if not rushed into some places that could've been fleshed out more but with the attention span of young audiences and all.

and Olaf the snowman is not as bad as some other sidekick characters and oddly amusing with his unintentional self-nihilism considering his dream is to see and feel the heat of Summer.

Frozen was better than a majority of the movies that came out this year.

It was cute. Nothing extra special or amazing about it. Despicable Me 2, Planes, & Monsters University all were superior movies, but it was a NEW story with NEW characters and it was entertaining. Three things you can't say about most of the movies that came out this year.

I am suprised. Looking at trailers I thought it looked horrid. But man nobody has said anything bad about it.

The movie was really good. Loved it.

Good thing I sw it before I read this review otherwise I would have stayed away because Josh liked it. His reviews are always so counter to mine (ie good taste). :)

I thought it was pretty awesome they threw in the princess from Tangled. Love these most of these movies almost as much as my kids do.
