Edgar Wright talks a little bit about Ant-Man

The guys at Box Office Magazine just posted an excerpt of an upcoming interview with the director of "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" about his future Marvel project, "Ant-Man".

Wright is asked if it is true that this project would become more naturalistic and that he intends to make it a comedy.

This is what he answered:

"I haven't actually started the second draft yet--I'm not going to be able to until this film [Scott Pilgrim] is out--but what we wrote for the first draft, and what Marvel really liked, is that it's funny, but it's a genre film. It's about the level of comedy that Iron Man has. The idea is to make a high-concept genre film where it's within another genre. His suit and its power is the big gadget and it takes place in the real world. I just wanted to do something that was slightly different than the superhero origin film. I felt that between that and the various mad scientist, crazy doctor films that we've all seen, this would be a way into an origin that was slightly different. I'm not really a multi-tasker--I haven't done anything since Marvel liked our first draft."

Sounds nice, can't wait for the whole interview. What do you think?

Kind regards,

your friendly germany sidekick
Darantino

Sounds cool. And also how I thought Wright would approach this film.

I guess we should be hearing a little more about this film as Wright goes around promoting Scott Pilgrim.

Just a shame it didn't come out before The Avengers.

Also interesting how is talks about genre. All the Marvel Studios films seem to be having quite a different feel to them. (Ironman = hi-tech science fiction, Thor = epic fantasy, Cap America = period war flick, Antman = high concept comedy) Gonna be really interesting to see how they knit them all together to make the avengers without losing the feel that each character has.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't Wright's original idea involve bot Pym and Lang?Pym would be the old school Ant Man and Lang would be the modern one?I'm wondering how much of the script will have to be altered.

Also, I wonder how much input he has on casting the character.Originally, his movie would have come out before the Avengers, so he would be in charge of picking who would play Hank. Now that Avengers is coming out first and Hank is supposedly in the movie, Whedon is the one who gets to pick the actor.

Taz@ Good points regarding The Avengers and casting.

Thats why I was excited when I heard that they're maybe introducing characters with 10 minute shorts at the beginning of some of their grander features.

I was kind of hoping Edgar Wright would make an Antman one with the cast and crew he would hope to be using for the Antman feature when it gets made.

Also Whedon and Wright have been seen 'lunching' together (no, thats not a euphamism) so maybe they have been discussing casting ideas so that they are both happy?

While I don't want this to be a straight up comedy, a movie about a shrinking man can't be completely serious.Like the article says, it will have the level of comedy that Iron Man has.I can see the movie being serious, whereas the situation and the character can be humorous.

@ darantino love the deadpool, hulk two of my favorite charactors.
never seen the appeal of ant-man,heres hoping by the end of the film he drinks a formula that makes him become GIANT MAN.

I always loved the character of Yellowjacket. He is small enough to stay undetected if he chooses. He posseses a powerfull disruptor blast. He retains his normal sized strength and he can fly. That beats the Hell out of his other personas.

Ant Man talks to ants and has normal size strength. Not very "super" if you ask me.

Giant Man would never be a good superhero because he is way too large of a target for any villain that fires any sort of ray ( Lasers, flames, BULLETS ) he wouldn't last 10 seconds no matter how strong he is.

If Nathan Fillion is, indeed, playing Hank, then there will no doubt have to be humor as well as action. Fillion has a wonderful dry wit to him. He can do both drama and comedy without missing a beat, much like Robert Downey Jr. Throw in a good story and epic effects, and Ant-Man will make a great addition to Whedon's Avengers cast.

You people who think this will fail know not of the greatness of Edgar Wright. Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are feaking awesome. They are hilarious while staying true to their genera. He is beyond perfect for Ant-man.

@Hawksblueyes - once he is huge, I don't think bullets and such can hurt him as much because he actually increases in mass and not just size. He's skin in proportionately thicker. Of course, if he did get a bullet lodged in it he had better get it out BEFORE he shrinks back down!

Edgar Wright can do no wrong in my eyes.

@Hawks- I get what you're saying, but I think that part of his draw is that he's a tad bit lame as a superhero. Yellow Jacket is great for pure superhero, but I think Ant/Giant Man makes him a little more dynamic as a character. Wright keeps the humanity of his characters no matter the how outlandish the situation is. I'm looking forward to this.

Sounds great, I like the story. I wonder if they are gonna ask about the casting of Nathan Fillion and Eva Longoria because I wanna know if there is any validity to what CBM found out.

Hamm3rtym3: I have collected Avengers comics for over 30 years and I haven't seen his ants take down a major player ever. A full can of Raid and your good to go against his army.

Never cared much for Ant-Man... No problem with the character as part of an ensemble, but I really don't see how he can hold an entire feature film together.
However, if the movie does go ahead - Go for Nathan Fillion!!!!!!!
