GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Director Responds To Edgar Wright's ANT-MAN Exit

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has posted a heartfelt message on his facebook regarding the split between Edgar Wright and Marvel Studios over Ant-Man.

Earlier today, Joss Whedon ("Avengers: Age of Ultron") responded to Edgar Wright's sudden departure from Marvel's Ant-Man by posting an image of him holding a Cornetto ice cream cone. It was a show of support, as it references Wright's brilliant Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, At World's End). And now, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has issued a heartfelt statement on the matter.

"Sometimes you have friends in a relationship. You love each of them dearly as individuals and think they’re amazing people. When they talk to you about their troubles, you do everything you can to support them, to keep them together, because if you love them both so much doesn’t it make sense they should love each other? But little by little you realize, at heart, they aren’t meant to be together – not because there’s anything wrong with either of them, but they just don’t have personalities that mesh in a comfortable way. They don’t make each other happy. Although it’s sad to see them split, when they do, you’re surprisingly relieved, and excited to see where their lives take them next.

It’s easy to try to make one party “right” and another party “wrong” when a breakup happens, but it often isn’t that simple. Or perhaps it’s even more simple than that – not everyone belongs in a relationship together. It doesn’t mean they’re not wonderful people.

And that’s true of both Edgar Wright and Marvel. One of them isn’t a person, but I think you get what I mean." - James Gunn

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. James Gunn is the director and the story is by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, with screenplay by James Gunn. Releases in U.S. theaters on August 1, 2014.

It's funny, anybody could've reported this as news. Literally anybody on here, yet it was still an editor who did it. Just goes to show what lines we're willing to cross as a community here on CBM.

I actually commented on the post and asked Gunn how he managed to convince Disney to let him put Rocket scratching his crotch in the movie. He said that Disney were the ones who told him to put it in the trailer.

For James and Kevin: Was there ever a time when you had very opposing visions on a scene or character and how did you resolve that issue?

James Gunn: Every day. But the great thing about Kevin and me working together is that neither one of us have big egos about what we're doing. What's important is always creating the best movie possible, not getting what we want just because we think we're right. The truth is we agree 99% of the time. Those times that we don't, we talk about it, argue about it. Usually one of us wins the argument (our editors Fred Raskin and Craig Wood are often a part of these arguments). In those times no one wins we screen both versions and see what the audiences think. But, again, this has been over relatively minor stuff. Also, I trust Kevin on a lot of big issues and I think he trusts me a lot when it comes to comedy and character stuff. It's a really fun and enlivening partnership.

It's Disney higher ups that is now fvcking shit up. Oh well, they can do what they please. Their stock is stable and they have had a billion dollar franchise for back to back years. They know what the hell they are doing.

I mean Frozen is still raking in millions, they are approaching this franchise the same way. Obscure but potentially, a goldmine.

Interesting. Wondering who can do an Antman movie now though...

Wouldn't be surprised if this ended up to be Marvel's first canceled film.

Anyone can do the Ant-Man movie as long as they follow the Marvel formula. It just means that it will lose it's uniqueness.

It'll have levity, puns, and easter eggs.

R.I.P. Edgar Wright's Antman

2006-2014

Wright spent 8 years writing this, passionately involved. He read comics over and over again, and even watched Earths Mightiest Heroes. His twitter feed was full of Ant-Man research. This isn't just some relationship. For Wright to leave must have been extremely damaging. The man loved this character.

But Gunn is right about one thing. Marvel ISN'T a person and they shouldn't be treated like one. They will do anything for money and success just like any other company or corporation.

These are nice words, but ultimately worthless Gunn.

@Nova hmm that's a huge testament opposing the common view that Disney always has to purify and water-down everything they touch.

Im sure they do have to tone down some of there content when it comes to their more teen and early adult properties during production, but its good to know they have their moments when they encourage some attitude as well.

You have to know going into these films that unless you are the sole producer, you won't get creative control over everything. I'm sure Wright understood that from dealing with Universal on Scott Pilgrim. Obviously, there is more to the story that we may never know.

So now how long is it going to be until we get Ant-Man? Don't they pretty much have to start all over from scratch?
thewonderer
thewonderer - 5/24/2014, 2:25 PM
Amputech nailed it.

Wright was able to make Scott Pilgrim wasn't he? So he knows about studio/producer control over a property. And whatever movie Wright decided to make, it definitely would NOT bomb. It has the Marvel banner, there was literally no risk there.
