Is This The Real Reason Edgar Wright Left Marvel's ANT-MAN?

Latino Review's scooper extraordinaire, El Mayimbe, has posted a new report that provides a possible explanation as to why director Edgar Wright ("Hot Fuzz") exited his Marvel passion-project, Ant-Man. Hit the jump to check it out.

Yesterday, everyone was caught off guard by the sudden announcement director Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead") was exiting Ant-Man. Marvel Studios issued an official statement, citing "creative differences" as the cause of the breakup. Since the news hit many people have been speculating what the true reason for the split was. One popular rumor sweeping the net originated from Reddit.. It claims Edgar had upset Marvel Studios with his inability to manage a big-budget film. Supposedly production was "bleeding money" cause of delays caused by Edgar's need to be a perfectionist. Keep in mind, that's just a rumor from a post on Reddit. Don't put a lot of stock into that, but as I said people have given it quite a bit of attention. Perhaps, we now have the true cause. El Mayimbe of Latino Review has done some digging and this is what he has come up with.

"The prep on this film has been forever and it was impossible to be behind schedule because the entire production was out on hiatus by Marvel for duration of the script's rewrite. Families left homes to work on the movie in Atlanta and were now suddenly in limbo. So about the rewrite... About 3 months ago, Marvel had notes. The meat of the notes were about the core morality of the piece, must include franchise characters. etc., These notes came from the big four at Marvel. Joe Cornish and Edgar Wright did two drafts to try and answer the notes without compromising their vision. 6 weeks ago Marvel took the script off them and gave the writing assignment to two very low credit writers. One of the writers were from Marvel's in house writing team. Edgar stayed cool, agreed to stay on the project, and read the draft. The script came in this week and was completely undone. Poorer, homogenized, and not Edgar's vision. Edgar met with Marvel on Friday to formally exit and the announcement went out directly after. Edgar & Joe were upset by the sudden, out of nowhere lack of faith in them as filmmakers. Fiege had always batted for them but this felt like it came from the higher ups. Where does this leave the cast? Well, it is believed they don't have the option to walk like Edgar did." - El Mayimbe
Marvel's "mite"-iest hero will hit theaters July 17, 2015 courtesy of director Edgar Wright, from a screenplay Edgar co-wrote with Joe Cornish. The film stars: Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym. The cast also includes: Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Corey Stoll, Patrick Wilson and Matt Gerald.

In other words it was shit and Wright didn't want anything to do with it. Makes sense..

If this is true, I hope the whole thing gets scrapped. Either way, this is very unfortunate for the cast members who signed on specifically to work with Edgar Wright.

Damn, I can understand trepidation towards the project, especially from the 'higher ups', but why would they handle such a long gestating project so aggressively? What did they honestly hope to achieve in a few months that hadn't already been done over the past seven-ten years?

True or not, this just makes me remember all the other times executive decision-making has ruined these films, and it makes me rather angry.

'The meat of the notes were about the core morality of the piece, must include franchise characters. etc.'

You would think they would have this down pat by now?

Okay I was just chatting with someone about this and I had NO IDEA(!!!) that he was attached and working on this film since 2006!

Before Iron Man was made.

Essentially at the time when he signed on, the Marvel cinematic universe wasn't established and so he likely had free reign to do more of what HE wanted, but since he dragged his heels on the film for almost a decade, made OTHER films in the meantime, and so many other successful Marvel movies have come out, he no longer can make the film he wanted exactly HOW he planned.

Basically he let the grass grow under his feet, Marvel started making billions and connecting their films, and he essentially blew the chance to make an 'Edgar Wright' Ant-Man, and would now have to have a story that ties into everything currently in the works.

This is terrible. Poor Edgar.

i think back in 06...edgar said he wanted to make more films to help grow as a filmmaker and that he felt the technology wasnt there yet for this character and marvel were going to build their universe but now it has just fallen apart

i think edgar will be fine..its the people who left their families to work on this film and are now wondering when this is gonna happen that i feel sorry for

Edgar & Joe were upset by the sudden, out of nowhere lack of faith in them as filmmakers.

If what I've been hearing is true, I think it's less that they lost faith in Edgar and Joe, and more that since it's taken this long and they've established a universe they want connected, his script isn't viable anymore and he has to make it work within the new dynamic.'

Had he made the film years ago he very likely could have done whatever he wanted.
It's too late for that now, though.

They have a thing going on that any new director has to comply with.

They've made eight films since he announced he was going to do Ant-Man and he's made 3.

The opportunity for him to do his own thing is gone now.

@Jerbear

From what I've gathered it seems like Edgar Wright's vision for this film was too far from Marvel's expectations. You have to remember that his ideas for Ant-Man predate the MCU, which is something that has bothered me for a long time. You can't really fault either party.

Exactly. I think this is the real issue.
Things have changed for Marvel Studios since 2006.
They now have a movie universe they want to maintain.

I honestly don't think it's Marvel's fault for that.
They aren't the bad guys, they just need Ant-Man to tie into things and maybe that old script doesn't work anymore.

but the thing i dont get is....edgar wright himself had said that he had twekaed the film and changed it up to help fit the mcu more

Actually This movie is not that important for me anyway cause only and most biggest involvement of AntMan is that he is bigger part of Ultron's Story arc.but in this movie verse he is not..........

But I was excited for this mostly because of Edgar Wright..so this is very bad news for me though.

What I fail to understand is how this became a problem so suddenly?

It's not as though they don't plan out their universe in advance, and this is what they, as creative minds, are paid to do. If they weren't satisfied with Edgar's script, why did it take them until this year to do anything about it?

These stories aren't that complex, I fail to see the necessity for the level of script tweaking that this report it suggesting.

I'm pretty sure they have and will be compensated for their work and time.
They work in the industry and this is the risk you take. Films get stopped during production or put on hold all the time. Up until that point the production people working on them were receiving payment for it.

What will happen is they will go back to their families until they find another project to work on and will leave them once again to work on location.

That's how it works really.
That's what they signed up for.
They'll be fine too.

Complete bullshit. This doesn't even make sense. A few months before shooting they're suddenly having issues with the script? He's only been working on it since 2006, I'm pretty sure all that stuff would be concrete by now.

Why anyone believes this toolbag is beyond me.
