Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the latest DCEU movie to be besieged by negative headlines. For months now, we've been hearing test screenings were a disaster, while it was later reported that the sequel has undergone at least three rounds of reshoots.
Warner Bros. executives have started getting hands-on with the Aquaman follow-up, though the latest round of additional photography is thought to have addressed at least some of the movie's issues.
Are we looking at a disaster as big as The Flash? It's possible, though that would be a legit shocker, especially after the first movie grossed over $1 billion in 2018. However, a new rumour about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's trailer debut doesn't bode well.
According to a reliable fan page, Warner Bros. intends to announce plans for it to premiere at this October's New York Comic-Con. That means our first look won't be released online until two months before the sequel splashes down into theaters. In terms of marketing, that's a baffling decision on a number of levels.
Attaching the trailer to Blue Beetle would have made all the sense in the world, but we can't discount the possibility the studio is gearing up for another release date delay.
However, it seems more likely the plan is to push the movie as hard as possible over this two-month period, perhaps to save money or in an effort to increase excitement as close to its arrival in theaters as possible. Here's hoping no one dubs it "the greatest superhero movie ever made" in advance, eh? That didn't go so well last time.
In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.
The movie stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Nicole Kidman (Atlanna), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Adbdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), and Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus), along with newcomers in the form of Pilou Asbæk, Vincent Regan, and Indya Moore.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in theaters on December 20.
