Jason Momoa Reiterates His Love For AQUAMAN In Opening SNL Monologue

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is likely Jason Momoa's last cinematic outing as the King of the Seven Seas but that won't ever dampen his love for the character.

Jason Moma was the special guest for last night's Saturday Night Live episode and while the taping didn't go to deep into Momoa's role as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman, Momoa did touch on his role in his opening monologue.

As many already know, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to be Momoa's final outing as the green and orange-clad King of Atlantis but all signs point to him continuing his relationship with Warner Bros. Discovery in James Gunn's new DCU, as Lobo.

However, Momoa's not looking too far forward just yet as he shared with the SNL audience why the role of Aquaman is so special to him.

"I love playing Aquaman because I love the ocean. It's true. Growing up all I wanted to do was be a marine biologist, which makes sense because I'm built like a scientist. The problem was that even though I was born in Hawaii, I grew up in Iowa, which isn't really known for its oceans.

Then one day, I was sitting at home watching a movie called In God's Hands. Which was shot in Hawaii and I saw my cousin, Brian L. Keaulana, towing into these 50-ft waves and I was like, 'What the hell am I still doing here?' So I went back to Hawaii to surf with my family and I ended up on a TV show called, Baywatch.

...I feel like my life has come full circle. I do a lot of work protecting our oceans and small island nations. I even started my own water company to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles. It's called Mananalu which, in Hawaiian, stands for Suck It Dasani. This word really means a lot to me. I'm serious. We're gonna save the whales, the coral reefs, and the SpongeBobs because Jason Momoa loves life. "

In addition to fending off the dastardly schemes of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's (Candyman, The Matrix Revolutions) Black Manta, Jason Momoa (Dune, Fast X) will also need to keep an eye on his brother Orm, who will once again, be portrayed by Patrick Wilson (Watchmen, Insidious: The Red Door). In addition, he will have to cope with all the political obligations that come along with being the King of Atlantis.

The film will also see Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Big Little Lies) return as Aquaman's mother, Atlanna.

Appearing in supporting roles are Amber Heard (The Stand, The Danish Girl) as Mera, Dolph Lundgren (Expend4bles) as Nereus, Temuera Morrison (The Book of Boba Fett) as Tom Curry, and Randall Park (WandaVision) as Dr. Stephen Shin. Additionally, Pilou Asbæk (Ghost in the Shell, Uncharted) has an undisclosed role in the film.

Wan is directing the sequel from a script written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, Aquaman).

The official synopsis for the film reads, "Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction."

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hits North American theaters on December 22, 2023.
