EDITORIAL: Why The Avengers?

Why I think people seem to be more enthusiastic about Marvel's The Avengers than FOX's X-Men:First Class.

Editorial Opinion

I have noticed the question rolling around for quite some time now "why all the hate for First Class while The Avengers is receiving nothing but anticipation?" Well, I have two answers to that question, one personal and one not so personal (and also not a fact but a theory). My personal answer would be that I always have been an Avengers nutcase. I don't even bother denying it. In order to even begin with the non personal answer to this question let's first take a look what has gone before.

People have been talking about The Avengers as if it was going to be the first time anybody, anywhere will get the opportunity to see a "group" of heroes in a full fledged, honest to goodness, "potential blockbuster" capacity. This of course, isn't in any way true. The X-Men began their run long ago. With three films to their resume, they are what we could consider an "established commodity."

In three previous X films (two of which were pretty entertaining) we have seen their legendary leader Cyclops reduced to a whiny, ineffective, non essential, emotional, wimp that really had no business in any of the films to begin with. We have had to bear witness to Storm, the African goddess that weaves in and out of an accent (in the same scene). We watched her levitate briefly, twice, instead of spending all her free time flying because she absolutely loves the freedom and it relaxes her. We witnessed a version of Wolverine that was much more "subdued" than anything that we have ever been familiar with. And along with searching for answers about who he really is, he seemed more concerned with searching for acceptance from anyone.

We have witnessed a non Russian Colossus, a non Australian Pyro and we will soon see a non Irish Banshee. For a group that placed as much importance on being as nationally diverse, as it did on it's members being mutants, the only nationalities three films have managed to present so far is four (American, Canadian, African and German).

Now there are many more things I could list but I think I have produced enough evidence to make my point in just a bit. As I said before, the X films were entertaining, even if they did at times irritate most of us and infuriate others for a various reasons (something I am sure The Avengers will also do.)

We have also been lucky enough to see two Fantastic Four films. Another group brought to life before our very eyes. Now, I have heard every complaint under the sun about this film from fans. As an outsider (I have never liked The Fantastic Four much) I have to say that outside of Sue Storm being miscast, I think they nailed the groups personalities and characters. I even think Alba did a good job as Sue. Mis-cast? Yes, but she did the best she could.

The Major problem with The Fantastic Four films can be found in the raping of three of Marvels oldest, most legendary characters. The Silver Surfer looked phenomenal but who came up with the idea to make his powers originate from his board? I'll tell you who. It was the same creative genius that decided it would be cool to see a Colossus/Electro version of Dr. Doom ride it around while the FF joined their powers into a Super Skrull (I forgot about him) in order to take him down. And Galactus..... There really is nothing I can say about the cloud that any of you are unaware of.

Having said all that, I still enjoyed the Fantastic Four films more than most people did. Which leads me to my point. You can say whatever you like about these films, there is plenty there to pick apart (as I'm sure there will be with The Avengers). Continuity can be overlooked, no movie should ever follow any comic book story or there would be no sense seeing it. I have said all along and still beleive, that the major problem with these films rested in the characters. They captured some of what made some of the characters who they were but missed terribly with most of the others. I think the X-films did a fantastic job with Professor X and Beast and a few others. Like I stated earlier, I think The Fantastic Four did a great job with the group itself and dropped the ball with everybody else in both films.

THAT is where The Avengers still looks promising. No matter what story line The Avengers end up using, whether it's Loki and The Hulk or Skrulls or whoever they fight. So far, Marvels films have captured the personality and character of the heroes we will see in the film. Stark, Fury, Black Widow, Banner/The Hulk, Thor and Captain America all look to be spot on versions of the ones we know and love. It's not going to be a case of meeting someone who reminds you of a friend but acts differently. At the very least, we will know the characters in the film very well. That's where we were all at least a little disappointed with the other films and thats the one point most of us agree Marvel has nailed, the characters themselves.

Marvel and Joss Whedon may make a completely terrible movie and X-Men:First Class may be the best CBM of all time. The problem at this point is we have seen what FOX does to our favorite mutant characters. We have also seen what Marvel has done to their's without outside input.

I am planning on seeing both films and hope they are both fantastic but when asked which one I anticipate the most and have more faith in, I would have to say MAKE MINE MARVEL!

tea: I think First Class looks good also and maybe I should have been more clear about that in the article. I just think that even with whatever costume changes, or script adjustments, or villains, or story's are involved, Marvel is delivering the charcters we want.

Nice work Hawks, I agree about the FF movies. Jessica Alba was miscast as Invisible Woman, but she did the best she could IMO.

I would just like to point out that this IS the first time we have seen a super-team on screen where the characters did not originate as a team in the comics.

X-men - first appeared as a team (minus Wolverine).

Fantastic Four - first appeared as a team.

Also, the members of these teams all have related origins (x-gene, cosmic rays). For the Avengers, separtely established heroes and all there disparate parts of one crazy universe are going to be pulled together (Asgard, super-soldier serums, tech-suits, gamma monsters).

Now THAT is going to be new and different.

Great job, Hawks! Keep up the good work!

@ MovieTheaterLad- Aren't ALL mutants a minority?

I personally would be more excited if First Class had a better team *cough*Astonishing*cough* in it. How many people would be excited for Avengers if it was just Vision, Hawkeye, Black Panther, Ant Man, and Black Widow? No Cap? No Thor? No Iron Man?

I think a lot of it has to do with who's on the team, continuity aside.

Good write-up but I think ultimately it comes down to fan base. I am looking forward to seeing the Avengers, just being a big comic fan, however I was never a big Avengers comic collector (in fact I never collected Avenger comics - although many Iron Man ones). I am in fact waiting eagerly for X-MEN, which I did collect. And, as you said, there are always discrepancies and inaccuracies - that will never change. We just have to take the bad with the good. On the plus side for Avenger tho' is Joss Whedon - which I'd put my money on any day!

No problem man.

I think that WittySupername was joking when he said that about Bryan Singer. He was making a reference to Kanye West, when he said that George W. Bush didn't care about black people during Hurricane Katrina.

great editorial. Hats off, Hawksblueyes

I had no idea you thought so highly of FF. I have an answer for you about the Silver Surfer board thing. In a VERY early Silver Surfer appearance Doom was able to gain Silver Surfer's powers by stealing the board. This was when the character was BRAND NEW. Since then the whole idea of Silver Surfer needing the board to power up has completely dropped off the radar. It's not canon, and hasn't been for decades. So essentially it was a very old writing flub.
But of course the moron of the universe Tim story didn't bother to find out about that. He just ganked the concept from that one old story arc and let it go at that. FAIL

Anyway there are dozens of reasons to be enthusiastic about Avengers.

And just a very small few reasons to be enthusiastic about Fist Ass. And some of those are kind of tentative.

the avengers is the most anticipated cbm ever.

marvel studios the avengers features 3 of the original line up & captain america who joined early on,they didn't really become the avengers until cap joined.

fox x-men first class professor x & beast, where are the rest.

this why fox is shit, the avengers will change how we look at comic book movies.

@Hawks Very good article bro. i agree with ya. to me, the only cool thing about X-Men 3 was Beast. Kelsey Grammar did a fantastic job in that role. but i think the biggest disappointment about that film was Phoenix. I was really looking forward to seeing the "Fiery Bird" Phoenix, not a pissed off Carrie on steroids. But im not looking forward to seeing First Class at all. AVENGERS ASSEMBLE

Speaking for myself, I think I've more or less grown out of the X-Men. I think they're more appealing to the teenager/adolescent fanbase, what with the themes of alienation, learning to deal with powers (aka puberty, growing up, etc) and because many of their characters are in fact young, live in a school, etc.

I thought the first two films were fantastic, especially the 2nd, but the 3rd was a disaster. And yes, some characters were butchered horribly. Cyclops and Storm definitely.

The Avengers as characters are more adult. You have Tony Stark/Iron Man who's a womaniser and an alcoholic, and Captain America who behind the boy scout exterior is very much a political figure. Plus you have the government intervention with the SHIELD crew and so on. Of course kids can still go and see these movies, but on the whole, I think they appeal to an older age group, like 20+.

As a huge Avengers fan myself, I've been wanting to see them in a movie since the 80s. Sadly, it looks like what we're going to get is going to be a LOT more filth-infested "ultimates" than Avengers, from interviews with Whedon and various others involved with the project. At least we have the VERY enjoyable show on XD, which is probably as close to the classic Avengers that got me into comics as we'll ever see in any other medium.

Hopefully, I'm wrong about this. I would love for the Avengers to be the best cbm ever. Lose the ultimate crap, and it will be.

@comicb00kguy I don't know, from the set up of backstories for the movies precidding The Avenger; that movie won't be anything like Ultimates.

Captain America won't be some military jackass.
Thor is 100% a god and thought of some nutcase (once Avengers come out).
Hulk isn't a sociopath.
And Iron Man wouldn't be a complete asshole.

Hopefully Hawkeye wouldn't be one dimensional like he was in Ultimates and be more like the 616 conterpart (or at least Earth's Mightiest Heroes).

I never saw a problem with Galactus being a cloud. Im sure we all expected more, but it did make sense. I actually liked the portrayal of silver surfer. The FF movies werent bad to me although the could have been better.

I DID NOT like the Doom portrayal, that was just horrible.

I'm just glad we're living in an age where making these films is possible and the effects can stand up to (fairly) close scrutiny..

I started reading Superman, Batman, Fantastic Four and Spider Man strips back in about 1970 so for me it's been a long time in coming and, although many of them don't (or can't) live up to my expectations, I'll watch every one of them and be thankful that I can.

I don't care if I'm knocking 50, I still love these characters and to see them up there on the big screen is still a huge kick for me.
