Aaron Eckhart Shares His Thoughts On THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY's Legacy

Looking back on how he approached the role of Two-Face in The Dark Knight, Aaron Eckhart shares his thoughts on the direction that future instalments in the franchise could take and his belief that Christopher Nolan will never truly walk away from the Caped Crusader.

The future of the Batman franchise is a great topic of debate among fans, with various rumours over the past year or so receiving a mixed response. A reboot in 2016? Joseph Gordon Levitt's 'John Blake' donning the cowl in Justice League? A World's Finest movie? We just don't know, and neither does The Dark Knight's Aaron Eckhart, but the actor does share his thoughts on whether or not he believes Christopher Nolan will ever leave the DC Comics character behind. The Olympus Has Fallen star also looks back on his time working on that movie and reveals how it never really felt like a comic book adaptation. Many thanks to IGN Movies for the following quotes from Eckhart.

"I mean, look, Iron Man is so successful and the tone of Iron Man is completely different than the Nolan Batman series. They're both very successful, right? And both entertaining. You could take Batman that way. You know Chris (Nolan) has done such hard work and created this tone, and Christian (Bale) has, and Heath (Ledger) and everyone who's been in these movies. I'd hate to see it be trivialized.

Batman's kind of special because it's one of the last comic books, or only comic books, that's truly tackling, in my opinion, issues. And relevant issues. I mean when I read The Dark Knight I go, 'this is a comic book movie? This is insane.' I mean you're talking about a city that's being taken over by corrupt forces and nobody will stand up for good, for decency and humanity and nobody can walk to the streets at night. Who wants to live in that city? And do the people really have to be vigilantes to set things right? I mean serious issues and it wasn't tongue in cheek. And that's where Heath was just so amazing. You know I said to Gary (Oldman), 'You know Gary how do you act in one of these things, what's the tone of it?' And that's a conversation I had with Chris. And to see Heath just take this thing deadly serious was exciting, and I feel privileged to have been a part of that, and I would hate to lose that because everybody who comes up to me on the street all over the world, the thing that they inevitably say about The Dark Knight is that it's about something, it's serious, it resonates with them.

Look, I don't know because I'm just an actor, but I don't know that Chris would ever give up total control of this franchise. I can't see Chris ever letting go of this movie."

So, was Nolan behind those TDKR underwear as well? It was released after the series ended

Should have been the villain instead of bane. At least that would have made up for the piss poor 3rd movie. Loved him as two face, number 2 will always be the best in my book.

This is exactly the difference to make a great CBM and a funny CBM,the difference to have an Oscar interpretation like the Joker and a idiotic interpretation like the mandarin/trevor/killian/mallen.

I really liked the tone of TDK movies.....the GA took them more serious. I used to work for a government Agency in the UK and no one talked about comic books in the office except me. When the TDK came out....there were people discussing it and how wanted to know more about these character.

This film truly changed things in how CBM are made today!

I agree with the Fun=Marvel....Serious=DC

Love Nolan's take on Gotham. He brought epic scope and drama to an otherwise corny genre and set the standard you see directors praising and emulating today.

Nolan has probably also set up the perfect Batman to come. Like the Joker said, there's no going back. You can't make cheezy ass Batman movies after the Dark Knight. I see future Bat film-makers maintaining a dramatic and gritty canvas taught by Nolan, while adding the fantastic elements of sci-fi and monstrous villains. It would be miraculous.

The greatest comicbook trilogy of all time. Now, if you'll excuse me, there's another Man of Steel TV spot on the front page.

Also Aaron Eckhart was awesome for the interpretation, maybe best than Ledger,it's more difficult play the character of Two-Face than the crazy Joker, both outstanding interpretation.

I dont think any CBM will ever pass TDK unless it takes itself 100% serious like TDK did and is a good crime drama. If a CBM wants to be better than TDK it has to aim at being one of the best movies of all time, becasue TDK is regarded as one of the best films ever made on a lot of people's list. The only marvel hero I can think of that can match a TDK movie is Daredevil.

Best comicbook trilogy by far. And definitely a game changer. All comic book movies won't be the same after this trilogy. Fact.

If Nolan and WB really, really wanted cash. They would put Cavill and Bale in a movie. It would make more money than any movie ever made. As well as make people shit themselves non stop.

IMO the best performance in TDK. He should've definitely had more screentime as Two-Face.

Piss poor third movie? Rises and Iron Man 3 are the ONLY good third movies in a trilogy. And IMO, Rises is far superior.

Rises had ambition, meaning, and a lot of heart. WAH Plot Holes, WAH WAH WAH because Dark Knight didn't have them? I can name a ton of plot holes in any film. STFU.

Seriously, the world we live in where ungrateful nerds complain about the quality of certain films when hollywood is full of shitty remakes and actually terrible uninspired films.

TDK Trilogy is a masterful trilogy and stands tall next to the best. All you whiners step aside for its here to say.

And Two Face should've been the enemy of Rises? There is nothing interesting about him besides the transformation. Once that's gone he is an ordinary mobster. What a fun villain to have in Rises NOT.

The dark knight is one of only three CBMs that I have walked out of and been absolutely speechless, the other 2 are spider-man 2 and the avengers. The thing about those 3 is that I had high expectations for all them and they completely destroyed them and went to a whole new level I couldn't of ever imagined.

The Dark Knight is such an amazing film. Blew me away when I saw it a zillion times in theaters.

Too bad The Dark Knight Rises doesn't even begin to approach the greatness of its predecessor.

thewonderer - 5/13/2013, 6:39 AM
Why? Why is Rises such a FAR departure from TDK? And don't even begin with the plot holes, because TDK has a lot too. So why?

TDK set a benchmark which led to unbelievable expectations for Rises.

I LOVED his performance as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. If it's one thing that I don't like about TDK(or even out the whole TDK series) is that they killed off the character in the movies.

I don't say it's the best trilogy because although Begins and TDK are awesome, TDKR is boring as hell.

Rises sucked. I'd like to know how it was a "more superhero" version of Batman when Batman is only in a total of about 30 minutes of a 2-1/2 hour long movie? It's a Bane movie. Batman was a side character. That's probably the number one reason it's so inferior. Rises and IM3 are probably the two most disappointing and over-hyped third movies in a trilogy ever.

I honestly can not believe people are literally begging for a 'reboot' already, it ain't even been a year since the last Nolan movie was released. Every movie in the trilogy was vital to the story; every film had something which showed us how Batman actually evolved through life, and all three films in the series are equally good. People may like to be cowards by not admitting it, but Nolan has made Batman into something really incredible that no other director could have ever achieved.

Greatest CBM Superhero franchise of all time. I always will be impresses out of the 3 two grosses over a billion at box office even without 3d but most of all Nolan, Bale and the rest delivered a true definitive Batman from beginning to end.

Amen PhoenixKing!

Now on to Superman aka Man of Steel ;)

@thewonderer: Very true that TDK set up mountainous expectations for the third film, but that doesn't justify the poor execution of it.

My biggest problems with TDKR are some of the casting (Hathaway as Catwoman is a fail all around, cry foul to me all you want), the story structure is really wonky (the Bat's already broken, then the Bat's broken again), the failure to really expound on the idea of a city under martial law by a criminal mastermind (it truly is glossed over in shady time-lapses and little attention to detail), and as others have mentioned before: not enough Batman.

...and my Christ, the dispatching of Bane for a horrible one-liner still bugs me to no end.
