Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks BATMAN & ROBIN, SPIDER-MAN And TERMINATOR 5

Legendary action star Arnold Schwarzenegger talks here about whether or not he regrets taking on the role of 'Mr Freeze' in Batman & Robin, why he missed out on the role of 'Doctor Octopus' in James Cameron's Spider-Man and just how much he knows about Terminator 5.

"I don't regret it at all," Arnold Schwarzenegger told Empire Magazine (in a recent issue featuring a lengthy feature on his incredible career) when asked about his role as 'Mr Freeze' in the critically panned Batman & Robin. "I felt that the character was interesting and two movies before that one Joel Schumacher was at his height. So the decision-making process was not off. At the same time I was doing Eraser over there and Warner Bros. begged me to do the movie." So, looking back, does he have any regrets about agreeing to be a part of the comic book adaptation? "In most cases I don't regret the movies that failed or were not as good. It's always easy to be smug in hindsight, right?"

Batman & Robin was far from the only comic book movie that Arnie has been attached to star in. At one point, he very nearly ended up playing 'Doctor Octopus' in James Cameron's take on Spider-Man! "It never got there because he had a battle with the studio and they went in a different direction," he revealed before talk turned to whether or not his career comeback included a reprisal of his role as the Terminator. "I think producer Megan Ellison owns the rights to Terminator 16, or whatever it is. Yes, five. They have been trying to put a script together but I've not seen it, so I've no idea. There's nothing on the drawing board at this point. Nothing on the plan."

Cameron wrote the scriptment back in 93 I thought...when it didn't go through he made True Lies. I think Octavious only had a cameo though, Sandman and Electro were the villains in Cameron's script.

I remember being a youngin' and reading through the development of James Cameron's Spidey. We'd just had Burton's Batman. I was really excited. It got my mind racing with the idea of these movies paving the way for other cbm's. Then it fell apart. I was so dissapointed. And the era of awesome CBM's I envisioned tired out to be The Shadow, Judge Dredd, Steel, and those horrible Cap & FF movies. Back then I had to read about that in magazines like Star Log and other sci fi mags. So this saga dragged on for months. Nowadays it've been done and over in like 3 weeks.

When they were planning Spider-Man 2 i remember Robert De Niro and Sam Neill were candidates for the role of Doc Ock.
Sam Neill would have been great.

batman and robin is not as bad as everyone makes out
i saw it in cinemas and when arnie as mr freeze filled the screen all in blue it was wonderful.
The movie never lets up and looks brilliant.
My kids watch it it a lot and consider it one of their favourites.
its better than the last instalment of the dark knight which caused both my kids and partner to fall asleep!

I would have liked to have seen James Cameron's Spider-Man film (the Electro and Sandman one not the Dr. Octopus one). That being said I wouldn't have regretted being him in Batman & Robin. The man got paid $20 million (I think) for it.

Yuck. I'm glad that never happened. Spider-Man 2 was definitely worth the wait. It was the best CBM to date, atleast until a little birdie called Dark Knight flew into town ;D

Im not sure were you're getting your info but Schumacher made the movie he wanted to make.
Michael Keaton said he knew Batman Forever was in trouble when Schumacher was hired and at a big meeting ranted on about the films being do dark and they needed more color.
WB and the toy company had plenty of control over the film but at the time Schumacher was all for it. Like Tim Burton he was a company guy. Schumacher thought that the acceptance of "Batman Forever" was also an acceptance of his Gay Batman. So he gave us more Gayness in "Batman an Robin".
He can claim what he wants now but he was very happy with those films until the "Batman And Robin" cost him opportunities to do other films.

Arnold probably doesnt regret the film because it was one of the last he made like 20 million from.

But it says something about what hes about that he doesnt.

The best answer would be: The movie didnt entertain people and give them what they wanted, so yes I regret it.

Batman and Robin wasn't so bad for what it was meant to be; just think of it like a modern sequel to the 60s era. Also the only live-action appearance of Nightwing to date, or at least his costume anyway. It has its faults, but is still enjoyable and the best Batman movie for kids.

I love that Arnold's big catchphrase for Dr. Octopus would have been "okey-dokey". It's like the worst possible recurring line you could ever give a character. And honestly, I just want to hear Schwarzenegger say those words.

Batman and Robin was a terrible movie, and Arnold was a terrible Mr. Freeze, but at least he seemed to be having a blast playing the guy. In fact, if you think of Batman and Robin as a straight (har har) adaptation of the '60s T.V. show rather than a comic book adaptation, Arnold as Freeze makes sense, since he was a huge star at the time and big stars were always eager to play Batman villains in the sixties. Watching it with that in mind, it's actually a lot more entertaining.

... Well, a little bit more, anyway.

Freeze is seriously one of my favorite villains and that movie just totally destroyed it. I'm not a happy camper with it at all.
