TDKR Tops UK Box Office; Narrowly Misses Out On Beating THE AVENGERS

The Dark Knight Rises opened with over $160 million in the US this past weekend, and it has now been confirmed that Christopher Nolan's epic finale to his Batman trilogy had the second highest opening of 2012 in the UK, only just missing out on topping The Avengers.

Digital Spy reports that The Dark Knight Rises' UK debut of £14.6 million is the second highest opening of 2012, but obviously is not quite high enough to topple Marvel's The Avengers (better known as Avengers Assemble on that side of the pond). Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble (which was helped by £2.55 million in preview showings) had an opening weekend of £15.78 million back in April. However, Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman movie had no problems beating Sony Pictures's Marc Webb helmed reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man after that opened earlier this month with a still impressive £11 million. This opening for The Dark Knight Rises is £4.43 million ahead of both Batman Begins in 2005 and The Dark Knight in 2008. Below is the current UK box office top ten in full. Be sure to read my 5* review of The Dark Knight Rises by clicking HERE.

1. (-) The Dark Knight Rises - £14,362,443
2. (1) Ice Age 4: Continental Drift - £2,112,021
3. (2) The Amazing Spider-Man - £1,051,641
4. (3) Magic Mike - £885,330
5. (6) The Five-Year Engagement - £77,158
6. (5) Cocktail - £70,212
7. (4) Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - £59,788
8. (7) Men in Black 3 - £55,680
9. (8) Prometheus - £39,075
10. (9) Katy Perry: Part of Me - £38,327

IMO Batman Begins will always be the better of the 3. The biggest disappointment was Banes death.

I plan on doing the same thing. Watch the trilogy in order. Fri: Batman Begins, Sat: The Dark Knight, and Sun: Dark Knights Rises. Hopefully the theater won't be as packed on the second weekend. Opening weekend is always to busy for me.

People on this site tend to compare The Avengers to The Dark Knight Rises, which is ridiculous. Why do you do it? is it simply the Marvel vs. DC thing? If any of you knew anything about movies you would know they are completely different films, out side of them both being comic character based movies, but of course that won't change.

This childish competition between Marvel and DC fanboys is sickening and makes reading the comments to these articles, just for one intelligent response, an arduous task.

If this is a competition which it appears to be then to make it fair the Avengers figure should only be from the normal and IMAX showings not including the 3D viewings right?

Don't get me wrong if we all shared the same taste in films it would be boring but basing it upon the M vs. DC 'battle' just makes you lot look like a shower of [frick]cing twats.

Sorry for being rude but it seems like thats the nature of things on this site.

@GammaVerve - Get your facts straight before you comment. Here are some comparison opening weekends..

AUSTALIA:
Avengers - $13,923,182
TDKR - $15,674,477

DENMARK:
Avengers - $1,658,686
TDKR - $2,075,040

FINLAND:
Avengers - $431,815
TDKR - $754,264

NETHERLANDS:
Avengers - $1,492,640
TDKR - $1,709,276

That's from only being released in 14 territories so far, the box office for TDKR is just beginning and the tragedy around the shootings has added even more interest for the movie in the countries its yet to be released in.

@Newbus - Its rated high because it has greater depth and quality to its production than Avengers. It won't beat the Avengers for box office popularity, but the movie isn't ultimate popcorn like the Avengers. Comparing the two is like comparing Star Wars to The Godfather, one is all about the quality of various aspects of film making and the other about the spectacle of pop-visual entertainment. So since most people don't give a flying frak about quality of cinematography, depth in performances and character journeys, relateable content, the dynamics of an ensemble (The Avengers did that aspect quite well actually), effective production values in costume and set design, use of original score or singular and collective narrative structure; then in most cases the film they simply have most fun watching they consider to be the best regardless of any technical merit of far superior made movies that they simply don't find as entertaining.

Magpie100, I know what you mean, I am on here less and less now because all that happens here is young teenage boys shouting either DC SUCKS or MARVEL BLOWS rubbish. Can you believe they actually choose a side, but its human nature, if I was to comment I would be called a nolanite to dare dis the Avengers, I have been reading comics since I was a lad that 25yrs ago! Both Marvel and DC and I have fluttered between the two, but on here people choose one over the other and you cant comment on here now without having some angry teenager bashing hid keyboard in their dark bedroom with sarcastic comments and ending with MARVEL RULZ. I loved TDKR, thought it was fantastic, but for people to pick on every momment and say how it ruined it, my god, what films do you watch that dont have parts that you dont agree with. You know from the BB that it was focused on BRUCE not batman, not the villain but Bruce, how can you go to see this not knwing this and expecting Transformers. I like plot as well as action and I am fed up with watching films that are far fetched in terms of the basics. Im not going to start picking holes in the Avengers as I am COMPLETELY impartial but there are many, didnt make me not enjoy it in any way, people already made their mind up that they were going to hate it before watching it. I loved it, Avengers 9/10 TDKR 9/10, havent seen Spiderman yet, Roll on Iron Man 3, MOS, Avengers 2 and beyond!!!!!!

I have a friend that is a HUGE Batman fan and he told me yesterday that he was not that impressed with it... He RAVED about TDK too.. Makes me wonder if I will like it because I loved the first two..

And of course coming here reading the squabbling fanboys and their pissing contests as to what movie franchise is better.. Blah blah blah..

Maybe they should all start sucking real bad then they can stop making CB movies all together.. Maybe then can this silly community finally come together..

well, maybe there would be less DC vs Marvel fights if the people running the site stopped using headlines like "TDKR Tops UK Box Office; Narrowly Misses Out On Beating THE AVENGERS"... was that second part really necessary?

they seem to be more obsessed comparing the two, than the people in the comment section.

Okay ive seen it now and here is my opinion;
Its a sprawling mess of a movie.
I found the first hour or so to be okay, quite enjoyable.
Then it just seemed to crush and rush to explain everything and nothing.

I loved the first two, even watched them to update myself before this final part of the trilogy...bad bad bad.

Someone else suggested that the whole film was like in the tv series where Batman is running around with a comic bomb on a jetty and does not know where to throw it without hitting some innocents,
Well we were the innocents, the audience put our faith in someone to deliver and they took or money and did not have the decency to run.

Heres the rub,at the end I was emotionally charged and shed a tear...why?

Something about the film didn't feel right. It felt like I was watching two different films at times. It just wasn't cohesive. I still enjoyed it though, I loved this trilogy, and can't wait to pick up this box set.

Yeah frankly i was really excited for this movie but it just wasn't as good as its predecessors. As someone mentioned some things were laughably forced such as blake knowing who batman was. Also the gun fire lighting up batman as he attacked henchmen, laughable. Can't wait to see gifs and paradys of that.

Frankly I think some people over hyped this movie in their heads so much they can't admit that it really is the weakest of the 3. Not a bad movie but i certainly won't be seeing it 4 times like i did TDK And avengers.

Why do some of you have this mentality that anyone who didn't like TDKR is an Avengers fan? Some just didn't like it. Simple as that.

Me, I liked this movie. Didn't think it was as good as TDK, but still a very good film. I had my doubts about Anne, but she really surprised me with her performance. Bane was cool too.

I'll say this once more on this forum. The Avengers was released internationally 3 weeks before it opened domestically. A very big head start as opposed to TDKR. I saw Avengers 3x giving it a fair shot. In no way shape or form is it better than TDKR.

It was okay, but I liked the first two better. This one had way too many holes and I just couldn't buy into it. They tried to do too much in too long of a frame of time and still didn't get it done right. The cliche ending was just a major disappointment for me. I expected a little more than that from Nolan. I won't go into that to avoid major spoilers.
MJPETTY7

The Dark Knight Trilogy is possibly the most epic trilogy ever in film. Not just superhero films (as, it already is that), but in film all together. The only franchises that may threaten that remotely are Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Toy Story (yes, Toy Story), and Transformers. The only real threat however is Star Wars.
