Colin Farrell Admits The Penguin Doesn't Have A Huge Role In THE BATMAN, But Does Have "Some Tasty Scenes"

While on the virtual press tour for Disney+'s upcoming Artemis Fowl, star Colin Farrell spared a few minutes to share some interesting details about his role as The Penguin in Matt Reeves' The Batman!

Production on Matt Reeves' The Batman is currently on an indefinite hiatus due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and save for a few set photos of Robert Pattinson in the Batsuit and cast confirmation, not a whole lot is known about what to expect from the highly-anticipated DC superhero film.

While doing press for Disney+'s upcoming original movie Artemis Fowl, Golden Globe-winner Colin Farrell (Minority Report; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) shared details on joining the DC Films Universe and about his role as The Penguin.

Based on the actor's comments, it doesn't sound like he'll have a big role to play in this chapter of the Batman saga, although that is always subject to change in a future installment.

It’s all exciting. To be a part of that universe and just there are certain words that are part of my internal lexicon: Gotham City, Penguin, Joker, Batman, Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent, all these things.

Tim Burton’s Batman was kind of my, no, I watched the Adam West TV show growing up actually as well. So Batman as a kid, yes very much, not in comic book form but the TV show I watched ardently when I was a child.  And then in my teens I saw Burton’s version and loved it.

And then obviously I was a huge fan of what Chris Nolan did with that world and how he brought it back to life and gave it an immediacy and a contemporary significance.  So just to be part of, again that folklore, that mythology, is again really cool.

I had only started it and I can’t wait to get back. The creation of it, the aesthetic of the character, has been fun and I really am so excited to get back and explore it. And I haven’t got that much to do. I have a certain amount in the film. I am not all over it by any means. But there are a couple of some tasty scenes I have in it and my creation and I can’t wait to get back. Yeah, I totally feel like it is something that I have not had the opportunity to explore before. It feels original and fun. But I am only at the start of the journey so I can’t wait to get back and really get into it.

With Pattinson as the headliner, Reeves has formed quite an all-star supporting cast consisting of Golden Globe-winner Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Commissioner James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Golden Globe-nominee Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Golden Globe-nominee Andy Serkis (Black Panther) as Alfred Pennyworth, Golden Globe-winner Colin Farrell (The Gentleman) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, newcomer Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, 2x Golden Globe-nominee John Turturro (The Night Of) as Carmine Falcone and Golden Globe-nominee Peter Sarsgaard (Green Lantern) as Gil Colson.

Gil Perez-Abraham (Orange is the New Black), Charlie Carver (Teen Wolf) and Max Carver (Teen Wolf) have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Plot details are being kept locked away at Arkham Asylum for now, but the film is rumored to be a loose adaptation of the popular DC Comics Batman stories The Long Halloween and Year One.

Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Mattson Tomlin (Little Fish). Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Greig Fraser will be behind the camera.

The Batman hits theaters June 25, 2021.

Does he seem to be implying we'll see the Penguin's origins in this film? He keeps referencing his "creation"

@Unreal2k9 - I think he means creation more so in him and Reeves crafting this take on the character

@Unreal2k9

He’s an artist. The character he is portraying is something him and Reeves are creating.

Good, the focus should be on Batman v Riddler. We don't need a ridiculous team-up like in Batman Forever.

SerKurtWagner - 5/18/2020, 7:09 AM
@soberchimera - I mean, I agree technically, but I'm pretty sure it was Batman Forever that made it ridiculous, not the mere existence of a team-up.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 5/18/2020, 8:22 AM
@SerKurtWagner - I think it's always better for a film to focus on one villain than to have two, especially two iconic ones in this case, vying for screentime.

@soberchimera - As silly as the plot was, and even with all the neon and smoke, Jim Carrey had some seriously shining moments as Riddler.

Seems we're going to see only brief run ins with each member of the rogues gallery, which could be a nice twist if handled right

Colin Farrell's a really under-rated actor, nice to hear him saying he's got some scenes to chew on and explore as Cobblepot.

@tmp3 - They should have kept him as Grindelwald

tmp3 - 5/18/2020, 6:34 AM
@WakandanQueen - Yeah, so weird to replace him with... an actor who's way hammier. I guess it's for the best considering how bad the second film was.

@WakandanQueen

Depp wasn’t the problem with Crimes of Grindelwald.

@regularmovieguy - He gives a weaker than Farrell did in the first one though

@tmp3

Farrell was awesome, no doubt. They must’ve really wanted to keep the poly juice potion twist in tact.

And TBF the Depp casting was a pretty well kept secret at the time.

@Floke - I don't know if you watch It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, but first DeVito's Frank, and then Dennis many years later really don't like this guy.

I think it's suspicious that he mentioned Harvey Dent. That said, I didn't exactly expect Penguin to be the big bad for this anyway

Movie of the year

Alex Jones vs Karen

She should've just said sorry

@BlackBeltJones - Nolan: I'll be the one to open back cinemas!
Alex Jones Crowe: Hold my pickup truck
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/18/2020, 6:36 AM
@tmp3 - this looks like the right amount of ridiculous and over the top.

This is the kind of movie that would kill on VOD though so I wonder if they will buck and just put it on there first before theaters.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 5/18/2020, 6:44 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I would hope they do a ballsy ending, but I doubt it. We know he's going down either way; I don't see him disappearing like Hannibal Lecther. But if they were to kill either the kid or the mother, that'd be intriguing. A little too similar to The Hitcher all told, but who cares.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/18/2020, 6:46 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - it would be PERFECT if it ended with her saying sorry and he just walks off or gets arrested, but he got his apology. He pushed her to the brink (maybe the kid dies) and she gives in.

It kind of seems like he was owed one too. But yea, you know she's going to win; probably kill him somehow.

@BlackBeltJones - Here I was happy to see Jimmi Simpson in something and then... Poor guy just can't seem to catch a break.

Cobblepot is going to be a public and controversial character, similar to the celebrities who attack paparazzi. Until Falcone dies, he won't try to take control.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 5/18/2020, 6:34 AM
@Repian - I can totally see this happening. He will mostly be on the sidelines.

I always assumed Penguin would be the side villain, while The Riddler is the main baddie in this one.
BestAtWhatIDo
BestAtWhatIDo - 5/18/2020, 9:04 AM
@KWilly - Would have preferred that, to be honest. We'll see how it turns out, I guess. It's still possible that he is the main villain: Ra's in Batman Begins only had a handful of scenes.

Figured as much. Using a name most fans were unaware of, Edward Nashton, is a pretty big hint to me, that's it's a Riddler-focused movie. Unlike say Batman Forever, where he had to split time with Two-Face (pun totally intended😂). I think Penguin and Falcone will be the head crime bosses to distract Batman. Catwoman serving as the mysterious female lead, with her own storyline and motives.
BestAtWhatIDo
BestAtWhatIDo - 5/18/2020, 7:20 AM
Too bad, I was hoping he'd be the main baddie, but I guess it's going to be Paul Dano. Both great actors, but Farrell has a lot more sinister presence to him. Sidebar, finally got around to watching Good Time. I was already sold on Pattinson, but I really think he's going to smash it.
BestAtWhatIDo
BestAtWhatIDo - 5/18/2020, 9:06 AM
@BestAtWhatIDo - Pattinson was very good in The Lighthouse, but he struggled more with the dialogue and accent than (flawless) Defoe did. He was very natural and compelling in Good Time: I almost forgot it was him.
