Deadline broke the news last week that Matt Reeves (50) is in early talks to helm WB and Ben Affleck's Batman movie and it seems everyone is rashly taking it as a done deal.  It's not entirely foolhardy, as deals are usually completed and contracts are signed once negotiations reach this stage.  However, every once in a while, talks break down and the studio or talent may choose to walk away.  If that occurs here, The Hollywood Reporter has stated that WB will then turn to Ridley Scott or Fede Alvarez.

Alvarez (39) and Scott (79) are interesting choices as one is just embarking on what looks like a very promising Hollywood career while the other is an established legend.  Of these two choices, which one is more likely to want to stick to the script already written by Affleck and Chris Terrio?

Warner Bros.' standalone Batman movie will star Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth and Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson/Deathstroke. Filming was originally scheduled to begin this Spring/Summer before reports of script issues emerged and Affleck decided that the film would be better suited with someone other than its lead actor directing.

I would gladly take either of them over Matt Reeves. They're both amazing

@TheSorcerer - I would gladly take Reeves over either of them.

Ridley Scott, while a legend, has directed 6 films in the past decade, and only 1 has been been well received (The Martian). He's risky nowadays.

Fede Alvarez I'm neutral on. He seems alright but a little inexperienced.

Matt Reeves can do the un-doable:
-Remake a critically acclaimed foreign film, and have his remake be even more acclaimed (Let Me In)
-Successfully take a goofy concept and make it deadly serious to critical acclaim, and make a sequel better than the original (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes)

@Elayem - As I understand it, the 3 of them were being considered and it was Reeves who they had more advanced talks with. Alvarez and Ridley didn't pop out just now.

At this point I think it's only a matter of WB working out the details with Reeves, but he must've liked what they have and/or have a vision of how to do it.

Btw, I agree word for word on your opinion of these guys. A Ridley Scott directed Batman film sounds amazeballs on paper, but I find him hard to place with his latest films.

@TheSorcerer - Alvarez is an interesting choice, considering he said this when asked if he'd direct a CBM
"What would I do? I enjoy a lot more freedom than that. I don’t know. Eventually I might. And it depends on probably the characters in the stories. But just something about my job as a director that I really enjoy is creating my own thing"

I just can't see Ridley Scott doing a CBM.

Alvarez would've been an interesting choice.

@MattBellissimo - Scott himself even said he's not interested whatsoever in the genre.

No to Scott imo. I'd take Reeves and Alvarez over him right now for a take on Batman. A few other directors i'd personally take over Scott right now as well.
