Dune director Denis Villeneuve recently threw some shade at the superhero movie genre by stating that “there are too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a cut and paste of others,” but it seems there is one - and only one - comic book hero the filmmaker might be interested in developing for the big screen.
Before Matt Reeves signed on to helm The Batman, Villeneuve was rumored to be in contention to land the gig, and Josh Horowitz asked the director about those reports while speaking to him during the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Denis said he couldn't actually recall if he'd been offered the chance to helm the project (he thinks he'd have been too immersed in Dune at the time, anyway), before revealing that the Dark Knight is the "only [superhero]" he can relate to.
Of course, Reeves has taken charge of the current incarnation of Batman, but there's nothing to say Villeneuve couldn't come on board for a sequel or spinoff. The director names Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum as one of the stories he most enjoyed, and there's already some buzz online about the prospect of him helming a live-action Batman Beyond adaptation.
Villeneuve will (hopefully) be too busy with Dune Part 2 to even think about the Caped Crusader for the foreseeable, but would you guys be interested in seeing the acclaimed filmmaker's take on the iconic vigilante some day?
