Where should the Batman franchise head after Chris Nolan leaves?

How can the next director and cast play in Nolan's sandbox and still carve out their own identity.

Next year Chris Nolan will present us the final chapter of his Batman Trilogy. While I am very excited for The Dark Knight Rises, and believe that it will do well, I am also saddened. TDKR is going to mark the end of an era. In the aftermath of Nolan, Warner brothers will have to decide how to move forward with Batman series. They have a steep task ahead of them. Here are my ideas.

A. My first idea still revolves around Batman, but uses him in a different way. Over the past few years, the Batman books I have read the most of are Batman and Batman: Detective Comics. Batman always seesm to focus on Brice wayne and handles the character development in the Franchise. Detective Comics on the other hand is more focused on playing up the dective crime solving aspects of the franchise. To me Chris Nolan's movies fall more in line with Batman( the main series)in that they focus on heavy character development. I would like to see the next director take a more Dective Comics inspired appoach. I understand that in any movie, Character development is important and I'm not saying that the next film should stop developing Batman as a character, but I think the fous should be more on Batman and less on Bruce Wayne. Why? Because both Batman Begins and The Dark Kight( and presumably TDKR) have been immensely devoted to understanding why Bruce Wayne trained to be Batman and puts on the suit every night. We know his motivations very well now. The next film and the ones that follow should acknowledge the character development established in Nolan's trilogy but feel free to let loose and fous on Batman being a detective and defeating villain. The films can still thought prevoking and relate to our world, but i want to see more Batman in this one.

B. My second idea is to pull the focus back on Batman altogether and focus on other characters living in Gotham who affected by Batman. The ideal main character to move the series forward and see a different perspective with is in my mind Catwoman. She definately comes from a different school of thought than Batman, and has a different way of dealing with the crininals and police of Gotham. Whereas Batman tends to try and co-operate with the police, Catwoman, fully embraces her status as an outlaw. Depending on where her needs and desires lie, she can do things that are heroic and then do something simply to advance her own motives. The characters in her life would be interesting as a supporting cast. I'm talking about Holly Robinson and her girfriend Karon. Plus if the Black mask is a villain, his war with Catwoman would be epic to see unfold. I also would not mind the G.C.P.D. getting more attention. I would love to see characters like Renee Montoya, Crispus Allen, and Harvey Bullock all come into play. And if private investigator Slam Bradley is featured, that would be fantastic. And of course, Batman would stillbe involed to some extent.

C. Finally my third idea would be a separate series that could come before, aftter, or even run along side my ideas for continuing Nolan's world. I know many fans want very badly to see The Dark Kight Return and I am one of those fans. How ever I dont want to tie it to the current Batman universe because it would end eliminate the possibility of other great stories being told. It would have to be a separate story in it's own little world. after that story is tackleda sequel could be made in the form The Dark Knight Strikes Back, and would eventaully lead into Batman Beyond. This series would have to have it's own unique look. I am suggesting a motion capture perforamnce with the charactr models being rendered to look like how Frank Miller drew them.

Ultimately, I want to see all of thses ideas play out. I think the first 2 would pay homage to and offer the oppurtunity to try new thing with characters he would not have used with out disrespecting his trilogy. The third idea would be a dream come true for so many fans. Either way, Batman must live on.

just end it with nolan for about 5-10 years, lets give other characters a try in movie form.

warner/dc entertainment treat batman like the sun & everything in the solar system revolves around him.

when it should be the other way, lets see these characters get a big screen outing.

-the flash
-the spectre
-captain marvel
-nightwing
-teen titians
-justice league
-lobo
-wonder woman
-powergirl

After Batman ends with Nolan, they should not do another Batman film for at LEAST 10 years. I'm sick and tired of seeing him on the big screen because that's all the WB can focus on is Batman and Superman (that is, until recently with Green Lantern and Jonah Hex. FINALLY!). DC/WB has LITERALLY been dragging their feet and not doing their job right.

I want DC to expand and do more super-hero films like Marvel has been doing. Anything BUT Superman and Batman. Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to seeing how Snyder treats Superman with Henry Cavill, but I won't get my hopes up. The WB did say they want a darker tone for the Superman movie and it's still too early to tell if they will either stick to the original source material or make Superman what he isn't, a dark character.

DC/WB SHOULD have been doing more super-hero films based on their other heroes the moment Marvel began it's successful run of super-hero movies that began with Blade. And contrary to popular belief, it was BLADE that started Marvel's success NOT X-Men. Without Blade's success, Marvel wouldn't have had the balls to do X-Men or anything else.

However, the WB will keep on beating a dead horse and reboot the Batman franchise and Superman.

I want it a little closer to the comics with villains like clayface and Mr. Freeze

Knight and marvel72: I would love to see other dc characters get movies too. The characters are certainly worthy. Cooliovids: i definately want more villains along the lines you mentioned as well. If they could be done realistically like Nolan portrayed the bad guys in his films, that would be great.

I think, unless they do movies on Batman Beyond and/or The Dark Knight Returns, that they should give Batman a rest after TDKR. Wait 7-10 years at least, just to see other heroes get some spotlight.
Marvel's been bringing out nearly all of their well-known characters in one way or another to the big screen (heck, we're even getting heroes like Ant Man and Black Panther [maybe], which are characters that 90% of non-comic fans probably haven't heard of). DC barely scratched the surface beyond Batman, Superman, and now Green Lantern. We need Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, Nightwing, and even Martian Manhunter in theaters too.

Let him wait and get rebooted, I really want to see other characters get a chance on the big screen like: Booster Gold, Doom Patrol, Flash, Green Arrow, Captain Marvel, Deathstroke, Lobo, and so on and so forth.

I think a reboot is not needed. So far Nolan has established quite a franchise that a good director can build off of if they give it their all. Nolan has brought the series so far that I really dont want to rboot and start from scratch.

For those saying to give Superman a rest. They need to FIRST nail a good film for the guy. So far, only BATMAN has gotten the goods from Nolan.

Superman had one MASSIVELY TERRIBLE film in 2006. WB needs to right their wrongs and make an amends with the Superman-fans by giving Supes a good film as a "send-off" then i wouldn't mind other heroes getting a shot. But I don't want them ending Superman on a bad-note.

I personally feel that Batman needs a reboot, mainly because Nolan doesn't delve into the fun fantastical side of Batman, which is my favorite part.

Plus, he's already killed Ra's and Twoface.

Dane, please understand how many people in the world will disagree with you. No offense intended, but the "fun, fantastical side of Batman" is exactly what Shumacher put together and look how well that turned out. There is no need for a reboot, it would be a huge mistake. Leave Batman alone for a generation and let's focus on other heroes. Superman is getting a fresh start and hopefully he will finally get some justice on-screen. Green Lantern will be out soon and The Flash is currently being considered. I won't include Wonder Woman because it appears that WW is already in trouble.

Hey LP4, once again you speak volumes of wisdom that will fall on deaf ears. At least one of us agrees with you.

What I'm saying is that it needs to be fun and fantastical, but it also needs to remain serious. You can't do that when you have bat-nipples, a bat-card, and ice puns every 10 seconds. I'm talking more along the lines of Batman(1989) and Batman Returns. I'm just not down with hyper-realism, because that's not how Batman is.
ironpool007
ironpool007 - 3/4/2011, 11:34 PM
I would say that sometimes Batman is hyper real. Some times his stories come looking very trippy as well. And some times they even go a fantasy route with Batman. I think at it's core, Gotham and Batman should be grounded in hyper reality. Batman is essentially a vigilante. the heightened realism just makes the stories more fun.

I like your ideas especially the last one, i don't necessarily like the dark knight strikes back or the dark knight returns but i still would see them as long as they had a Batman Beyond Trilogy. But If you think about it, Batman Beyond will have to get more famous if you wait so long i mean, if you wait ten years well then i don't think it will come on on the HUB anymore
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 3/5/2011, 11:51 AM
Um...yeah, Dane. go back and read your last post. It makes no sense at all. You can't have it both ways. You can't have "fun and fantastical" and serious at the same time. Once again, that's what Schumacher tried to pull off and it didn't work. That is NOT how batman is. Once you've done that go way back and read Bob Kane's original concept for Batman and you may realize that Nolan's realism approach works. Besides, if you want "fun and fantastical" just watch the reruns of the old Batman TV show.

Checkmate - 3/5/2011, 2:48 PM
Like I said, you can have the fun/sci-fi/magical side of Batman and keep it serious. Just because ONE bad director made a bad movie doesn't mean it couldn't work. Schumacher slaughtered those characters in that movie, they were only ghosts of their comic counterparts. The comics have plenty of stories that are serious yet they contain these elements, like: lazarus pits, Venom, Joker Toxin, the Batwing, and even with characters like Clayface, Ivy, Man-Bat, Freeze, Simon Hurt, and Mad Hatter, the stories still remained serious. When you get a GREAT director, with a GREAT script, with GREAT actors, and GREAT effects, you CAN pull it off.

When you exclude these characters and items from Batman's world, your taking away too much of what essentially makes Batman Batman.
Exactly why I'm not going to see TDKR in theaters, all it's worth is a rental.

ironpool007 - 3/5/2011, 4:42 PM
I agree with you Dane in some ways Dane, but I dont think we need a reboot to do these things. If a director works hard, they can make all these other fantastical villains and elements fit into Batman's world relaistically. And Redhood 13, im glad you like the ditorial. I always saw Batman Beyond as a natural extension of the continuity we last saw in The Dark Knight Strikes Back even if the 2 version were never linked by by he creators of both projects. To make Batman Beyond, a known idea for a movie, Terry McGuiness could be introduced in Returrns or Strikes Back as supporting character, so that when Batman Beyond becomes a movie, his assuming of the Batman mantle feels more natural than just introducing him in his movie.

Zach Snyder! Get back to a stylized Batman and Gotham city! When look at Batman I don't want see New York city or Chicago, I want to see Gotham City! Batman's home. Tim Burton's vision of Gotham was very good how I always pictured Gotham. Now let's get Snyder in on it and let him expand on it!

@Knightstalker- Thanks once again man ;D

Yeah some of the ideas i hear on this site really make my head spin. Some dudes...actually wanted Routh to return as Superman (which is stupid on its face, because it's a reboot meaning recast. Bringing back the same guy makes no sense for a reboot) plus why bring back a stale actor like Routh anyway? And then some dudes actually wanted Bizarro as the main villain 0_0 So the first film where Superman will finally fight a REAL villain...and they want BIZARRO?! I mean...not Brainiac? Darkseid? Parasite or Metallo? Heck even ZOD?? Instead they wanted the first-ever villain for Superman to fight in film history to be a mentally handicapped opposite version of himself. -_-

As for Batman, by 2012 he will have had a good run of 3 great films, each one epic in its own right. So I say after Bats3, give BATMAN a rest. Just give Superman a really good reboot with Snyder and then if the rights revert back to the Siegel heirs by 2013 that is fine. I'm not expecting a full-blown Superman trilogy out of this- WB already ruined THAT opportunity when they killed their own Superman franchise by hiring that hack Bryan Singer and left it dormant for 4 years. I mean had SR worked in 2006, they would have had a sequel by 2009 and the third and final film for Supes by 2012- that would have been PERFECT timing for the rights to Superman revert back to the Siegels by 2013. But instead WB was so dumb and they put so much blind faith into Singer that they actually allowed the dude to release the film without having it pre-screened first. At this point I have very little faith in WB...but I have faith in Nolan and I'm sure he picked Snyder with good intentions. If just to have one really EPIC stand-alone film, that would be sufficient of a send-off for old Big-Blue.

2012 should be the finale for both Superman and Batman at least for a little while. Then bring in other heroes to fill the void for the 2013 year and beyond. Heck Flash is already scheduled for 2013 anyway, seems perfect.

im just wondering, with bane coming into this could we possible see the breaking of the bat? i know it is a HUGE stretch but if they did that then it could be a great way of ending nolans batman and they could bring in the new batman. I highly doubt it will happen but the thought has been on my mind since hearing about bane. Also i really just want to get to see a batman beyond movie and with nolan gone they might want to leave this alone for a bit and try another batman idea.

@LP4-Anytime bud,I really try to understand where some people are coming from on this site, but you're right. It just makes your head spin. Some people can't seem to wrap their brain around the fact that if a CBM is loaded up with all of the stuff from the comic book it is based on or too many elements from a cartoon version, then it's not going to translate to the big screen well at all. It will come out as cheap, campy, and contrived. That's the best way I know of to destroy a CBM franchise outside of letting Bryan Singer direct it.

Give Batman a rest and focus on the other DCU characters. Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and all the others that have been waiting in the wings deserve to have their shot at theatrical success without having to compete with or be constantly compared to any Batman or Superman movie.
LP4
LP4 - 3/7/2011, 11:04 AM
@Knightstalker- Thanks dude, yeah I agree with you. Too many heroes have been waiting a long time. I feel especially bad for Wonder Woman. She was supposed to have a film a few years back with Joss Whedon as director, got so far as to the casting calls and then he suddenly 'jumped ship' like the turd he is but i guess not that bad since they were gonna change her suit in the film anyway and give her that leather-jacket-matrix type of thing going...all that was missing were the shades ;P

But yeah, 2012 should be the end of Superman and Batman. I love those two but they need a vacation for a bit. Martian Manhunter would make for a great film, imagine the war on Mars against the white martians...freaking EPIC, probably if not more epic than GL ;P

btw- I may have Superman as my avatar all the time, but I'm def not in denial LOL. I really REALLY want a Martian Manhunter film!!!!! DAMMIT DC!!! That is probably the film i want to see most of, if not then my second choice is definitely the Teen Titans!!! OMG, the 80's george perez version with Deathstroke- THE REAL Deathstroke as the main villain, or maybe side-villain with Brother Blood as the main villain!! Geekgasms all around boy howdy !

sorry lol

I mean I'm all for ending the Superman franchise...but just not on a bad note with "Superman Returns" that would just so pathetic. C'MON DC!! MARTIAN MANHUNTER, GIVE US MARTIAN FREAKEN MANHUNTER!!!! Imagine how awesome it would be. I mean yeah he's on Smallville but he's never in his alien form and the one time they showed him in his alien form and freeze-frame it you'll see how fake it all is- what is supposed to be his "green skin" was actually just a green-collar shirt -_- smallville is pathetic. I could probably film a better t.v show in my own backyard then they ever could.

But god Martian Manhunter IF done correctly would be so epic...probably the greatest cbm ever. Ah well...
