While Black Adam made plenty of headlines last weekend for its super post-credits scene, the conversation surrounding the movie seems to have died away somewhat in the days since then. Was that big DC Studios announcement meant to distract from the apparent lack of interest in the movie?
We'll let you be the judges of that, but after an undeniably impressive (albeit smaller than expected) opening weekend, Black Adam has suffered a far from electrifying -63% drop during its second weekend of release.
With pretty much nothing in the way of competition, it's looking to make around $25 million from Friday to Sunday according to Deadline.
That's a steeper drop than some of Dwayne Johnson's other big movies, including Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (-58%), Skyscraper (-54%), and San Andreas (-53%). In terms of other superhero movies, it's also quite a bit more than The Batman (-50%) and Justice League (-56%), for example.
Black Adam has, however, beaten critically panned titles like Green Lantern (-66%) and Suicide Squad (-67%), though it's in dubious company being in the 60s-range. And yes, it's a bigger drop than the only Rotten MCU movie, Eternals.
Why the fall? Well, despite Warner Bros. touting high audience scores from Rotten Tomatoes, the DC Comics adaptation received mostly negative reviews and a B+ CinemaScore, suggesting moviegoers were far from impressed with Black Adam's DCU debut. As a result, a lack of repeat viewings from fanboys and negative word-of-mouth will have factored into these figures.
On the plus side, Black Adam will fly past $100 million on Sunday with an estimated $108.4 million haul. Whether it can earn enough for Warner Bros. Discovery to justify a sequel remains to be seen. It may, however, be wise to pair the anti-hero up with Shazam (or Superman) as soon as possible.
