Ava DuVernay Passes On Marvel's BLACK PANTHER; "We Couldn't See Eye To Eye"

Confirming Black Panther (and not Captain Marvel) to be the "diverse" Marvel movie she was in talks for, Ava DuVernay has revealed she and the studio will NOT collaborate on the project. Check it out!

Ever since Ava DuVernay was revealed to be in talks with Marvel Studios to potentially helm the long-awaited Black Panther adaptation, the Selma director has become the ideal candidate; and there were even rumors the she was in final negotiations. However, the filmmaker herself has unfortunately confirmed to Essence that those "talks" with the studio have since fallen through.

“I guess I'll declare my independence from this rumor on 4th of July [and] Essence weekend!” said DuVernay, today. “I'm not signing on to direct Black Panther. I think I’ll just say we had different ideas about what the story would be. Marvel has a certain way of doing things and I think they’re fantastic and a lot of people love what they do. I loved that they reached out to me.”

Ava DuVernay also confirmed meeting with the star of the Black Panther film, Chadwick Boseman, who is currently filming for the character's cinematic debut in Captain America: Civil War. “I loved meeting Chadwick and writers and all the Marvel execs,” she said. “In the end, it comes down to story and perspective. And we just didn't see eye to eye. Better for me to realize that now than cite creative differences later.” Not to mention the Ant-Man split between Marvel and director Edgar Wright. Despite not signing on to helm Black Panther, DuVernay says she's still in support of the movie. “I love the character of Black Panther, the nation of Wakanda and all that that could be visually. I wish them well and will be first in line to see it," she said. What do you think?

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige recently confirmed meeting with Ava DuVernay among several other filmmakers. And despite today's unfortunate news, the producer also said we should find out who is directing Black Panther by the end of the summer. Anyhow, starring Chadwick Boseman (T'Challa) with Ernie Hudson (T'Chaka) possibly on board, Black Panther is scheduled to open on July 6, 2018.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

My favorites now:
- F. Gary Gray, of STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON and ITALIAN JOB fame.
- Gina Prince-Bythewood, of LOVE & BASKETBALL and BEYOND THE LIGHTS fame.
- Rick Famuyima, of the recently released DOPE.

Hmmm....

Bring on F. Gary Gray

It's exactly what I expected. Ava doesn't seem like the kind of director that can just follow a formula without bringing her own strong perspective.
With all the praise she's gotten from SELMA, she's got enormous pedigree, and so she can afford to pass on such a huge opportunity.

But Marvel will be fine without her.

I trust Marvel's decision and direction for Black Panther more than Ava's

I hear you, I think it's for different reasons though, and I'm not sure how familiar Ava is with Black Panther either

To be honest, I didn't see her directing the movie from the start, she's talented and very passionate but I don't think she's a good fit for Black Panther and specifically for bringing Black Panther into the MCU

Personally, I didn't see it from the start

@KurtWagner1225 I don't disagree, just disappointed. She's a great filmmaker and worth the follow on Twitter.

True, definitely

I think F. Gary Gray or Ryan Coogler could be cool choices too

I think it would be amazing if Marvel could work out shared rights for Storm too

@WakandasSoul

True, I hear you, F. Gary Gray was on the short list for the Winter Soldier, and he already has a relationship with Marvel, so I think it's a possibility

Am I the only one who doesn't care at all that she passed? Marvel knows what they're doing, and going in each director should already be very well aware of the fact that they are in a studio heavy collaborative situation. And the really talented ones - like the Russo's - will find ways to add to the MCU without necessarily being able to call all the shots.

Edgar Wright is the exception here, I feel we all would have benefited from his voice, but in the end we are still hearing great things about Ant-Man & that Wright's voice is present.

Sounds like it was an amicable decision so it's not too bad, there might be hope that they can get her for something else.
