Marvel Studios has found great success on Disney+, so it didn't exactly surprise us when reports surfaced about Black Panther director Ryan Coogler tackling some sort of Wakanda-set spin-off. First mentioned last February, it's been all quiet ever since, though the filmmaker has been busy with helming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and producing Ironheart

During a recent interview with Collider, Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore shared a disappointing update on where things currently stand with the small screen project.

"Because of the amount of time and attention that went into this film, and frankly the Ironheart show, that is probably not as far along as people want it to be," he confirmed, "but there are certainly great ideas that we’re still talking to Ryan about. So, we’ll see how far we can get with it."

We still don't know what the focus of that series or standalone Special Presentation might be, though we have previously heard that it could revolve around the Dora Milaje.

Similar to the Ten Rings project that Shang-Chi director Daniel Destin Cretton was said to be working on, we're guessing it will depend on Coogler's schedule. In Cretton's case, he now has Wonder Man and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on the horizon, likely making the spinoff less of a priority. With Coogler, rumours persist he'll helm Avengers: Secret Wars.

In the same interview, Moore also touched on where things stand with Ironheart. Riri Williams will make her MCU debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and it sounds like work on the Disney+ series is going well.

"It’s nearly complete," he confirms. "I think they might be on their second to last day, if I’m not mistaken."

So, with or without this Wakanda spinoff series, we have lots to look forward to over the next few years. We do, however, hope it eventually becomes a reality.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to arrive in theaters on November 11, while Ironheart will premiere on Disney+ in 2023.

That's fine. Not everything needs to be saved for Disney+. Not everyone watches the Disney+ shows and not everyone has been thrilled with the Disney+ shows. They shouldn't be restricted with proper movie storytelling and ideas because the producers would rather see that on Disney+.

Thought The Russos had Secret Wars wasn't that there big return to Marvel?

@Matador -
In general the Russos' remarked on Secret War, not Secret Wars.

• Secret Wars is the new Avengers movie in 2026 (?)

• Secret War is more akin to combining Winter Soldier with Civil War

Secret War, to further expand, involves Nick Fury discovering Doctor Doom plans to fund a group of supervillains. As such he sends a team of brainwashed superheroes to overthrow Doctor Doom covertly. This goes poorly and retaliation occurs a year or so later with a super villain army attacking New York. The Superheroes are pissed that Nick Fury manipulated them into effectively attempting to overthrow a government, yet it's revealed that Nick Fury died ages ago and this is a Life Model Decoy of Nick Fury. At which point Maria Hill then takes over as leader of S.H.I.E.L.D.

If you were adapting it you could just remove the brainwashing and have a group of heroes convinced to stop Doctor Doom that goes wrong and then Doctor Doom retaliates later with an army of super villains for a big final fight.

@Scarilian - Oh so it's a different story damn I might have missed out on that one last saga I read from Marvel was the end of World War Hulk.

@Scarilian - I haven't read every single interview with the Russos, but I've only ever seen them mention the 1984 Secret Wars series as what they would have liked to make a film of, never the Fury story. Even as recent as this last July, they mentioned Secret Wars as the story they loved growing up.

@ruadh -
It's a little unclear. I'd lean more to articles misquoting them to refer to Secret Wars to latch onto the bigger more well known event or simply a miscommunication. Primarily because they remarked on wanting to explore Wolverine and while he's in Secret Wars, you wouldn't have as much time to explore the character.

@Scarilian - yeah maybe. They said the series from when they were kids, and the Secret War comic came out when the Russos were in their thirties. Either way, they apparently aren't directing Avengers 6.

I think it would have been wiser to do the Black Panther series focusing around Wakanda as opposed to a Riri Williams Iron Heart show at this point.

Riri Williams in my view is not a character who should have inherited the legacy for at least another IRL decade. We have War Machine, Pepper Potts, even Harley Keener who are all viable substitutes prior if we desperately needed an Iron Man style character. In addition we also had the set-up of Morgan Stark. If they had waited until late Phase 7 in around 2027 (?) then it'd have made more sense to have a young Morgan Stark teaming up with Riri Williams. One inspired by Tony Stark as a person, the other inspired by Iron Man as a symbol.

Especially given Armor Wars got pushed back and turned into a movie, I'd rather have an Armor Wars trilogy with War Machine and potentially Pepper Potts as Rescue before we get to a character like Riri Williams. Riri is where you go when you've run out of Iron Man characters to adapt.

@Scarilian - Well, it just goes to show you. As much as I didn't want to believe the agenda stuff going on, they're kind of making themselves obvious at this point.

@Blastaar -
Even without any of the agenda stuff, at its core it's just bypassing a lot of interesting characters, stories and plots to speed things along to the next main event movie.

I figured this was cancelled because they are going to make Okoye the new Black Panther. :)

I think it's more likely that Shuri is the new Black Panther and they'll set-up T'Challa having a secret son or something for a young Avengers film in the future.

@Scarilian - I won't be shocked if we see a son in the movie. He could be at least 6 by now theoretically.

@deamon - I have to admit, they are the most baddass part of Wakanda next to T'Challa. They were the only things that kept me interested in Falcon & The Winter Soldier, besides Zemo himself.

There are several tribes, and different deities, so there's plenty of stories that could be told, not just about the Dora Milaje.
