SELMA's David Oyelowo Believes Marvel Would Be "Smart" To Hire Ava DuVernay

A couple of weeks ago, several reports broke claiming that Marvel Studios were interested in hiring director Ava DuVernay to helm either Black Panther or Captain Marvel. Now her lead star from Selma has claimed that she could "elevate" an MCU film. Hit the jump for more!

A few weeks ago, we heard reports that Marvel were interested in hiring director Ava DuVernay to helm one of their upcoming Phase 3 movies - widely rumored to be either Black Panther or Captain Marvel. The Wrap, who originally broke the news, recently sat down with actor David Oyelowo, who received a Golden Globe nod for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. in DuVernay's Selma. The actor insisted that a studio like Marvel would be "smart" to hire his longtime colleague:

“The thing about Ava is everything she touches she elevates. She bakes into it who she is. So, if Marvel is as smart and as brave to go on that journey with Ava, I’m personally the first in line to see what she does with that. I think she’s going to take it in directions that are both exciting and provocative, and different to what you’ve seen thus far. It’s always going to be a Marvel movie, but she is so singular as a director that I think her, plus that brand is an exciting idea.”

While Oyelowo did seem very excited to see his friend join up with the world of CBMs, he himself appeared to be a little more hesitant about the idea of starring in one:

“For me personally, I tread with caution around the notion of those kinds of characters. Depending on which one of them you’re playing, there’s always a danger you’re going to get so identified with this larger than life character, that it could become tougher for audiences to believe you in other roles.”

Do you think that DuVernay would be a good fit for Marvel? If so, which Phase 3 movie would you rather see her handle? Sign off with your thoughts in the comments below!

Says the guy who just played Martin Luther King Jr. Doesn't he have a day named after him or something?

Honestly Selma was overrated. 12 years a slave was vastly superior in the subject area, which is why I would prefer the likes of Steve McQueen even though I doubt he would do it.

@pasto
I'm a huge film buff, saw a lot of movies last year. Enough to tell you about how a list of the academy best picture nominations were over glorified bio pics that can easily be outshines by many of the independent films that the academy constantly ignores due to their objective of trying to be more mainstream. So yes, I'm not saying Selma was bad, just overrated due to its subject material.

Hire her. A CBM that focuses on racial inequality and socio-economic disparity in Africa would be a fresh direction for the genre.

About the article, my only concern with directors that make drama movies is can they handle the action. But on a side note, think Russo bros only did comedy until CATWS. So it could always work out

Selma is one of the best films I've seen in the past decade, so having Ava possibly directing a marvel movie is pretty damn exciting, to me at least!

"larger than life character" . Its Black Panther. Not Spider Man or even Aquaman. I'm sure more people (outside of comicbook readers) know who Aquaman is and not who Black Panther is. "hesitant about the idea of starring in one"
Doubt it. You're offered a role like this you take it. You'd be nuts to turn down this role. I wish Michael Jai White got the role.

I say give her a chance. She couldn't do any worse than Branagh, Black, Taylor, Whedon or Johnston.
