Marvel Still Not Considering A Disney+ Debut For BLACK WIDOW Despite WONDER WOMAN 1984 Heading To HBO Max

Fans were stunned to learn that WB decided against moving Wonder Woman 1984's release and will instead drop the film on HBO Max and in theaters at the same time. Similar plans for Black Widow do not exist.

Despite Wonder Woman 1984 hitting theaters on Christmas Day and simultaneously dropping on HBO Max, Disney and Marvel Studios reportedly have no such plans in place for Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. There is a possibility that the likes of Cruella, Pinocchio and Peter Pan and Wendy could wind up heading straight to Disney+, however.

With COVID-19 having a firm grip on cinemas and other entertainment venues in the U.S., MCU fans had hoped that Kevin Feige and co. would make the same choice for what will likely be Natasha Romanoff's final mission in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, Disney already executed a similar move earlier this year with their live-action Mulan film which debuted early for Disney+ subscribers for an additional price of $29.99 on September 4, 2020. The film will soon stream at no additional charge on the platform on December 4. Reports about how successful the venture was for Disney have been all over the place, and top execs have been somewhat vague about providing exact figures.

Shortly before WB pulled the trigger on Wonder Woman 1984, Marvel Studios executive vice president Victoria Alonso stated this about Black Widow releasing on Disney+.

"It seems to me that our films are films for theatrical distribution. We always said that we believe in different formats, and it is very important to maintain the custom, the tradition, of watching certain films in community."

"With Avengers: Endgame we did as usual: every Friday before a movie comes out, we go to see it with people who had never seen it. If you see it with those 500 people, or the 1,000 people, or the 100 people who were in the cinema, what you feel when you see that movie with other people is something very different from what one can feel in the living room with the four, five or six people who live in your house."

Of course, Black Widow appears to be in a somewhat unique position, as the prequel nature of the film likely means its release won't impact any of Marvel's plans for the rest of their Phase Four titles. Then again, there are rumors that characters like Taskmaster and Yelena Belova have a bright future in the MCU ahead of them. Right now, there's simply too many unknowns to say for sure.

Black Widow is currently scheduled for release in theaters on May 7, 2021.

@Spidey91 - I wouldn't rule out Disney+ yet. Bob Chapek said that Disney's focus is going to be streaming and that's why he created a new distribution branch to decide their future release strategy. Theaters and any social gathering places are not going to be safe for another year from the vaccines release date. Even when its released its only going to be given to "essential workers and high risk patients". The public is going to have to wait another year or 2 before its widely available for everyone and I don't see Disney waiting that long.

Just a rumor, but I heard Disney is going to announce Black Widows Disney+ date on Dec. 10's stockholder meeting. It's just not going to be released this year, but they are going to release it in theaters and Disney+ on the same day

@JuanCobble - its not like they have any set date they're planning on keeping. They're waiting to release the movie when its safe to go back.

May is still pretty far and a vaccine is underway with preparations to manufacture so...

Hopefully ww84 does well and they reconsider.

At this point i dont care about seeing something on the big screen, i just want to see them.

Who knows how much longer this will last and when stuff finally does go back to normal we will have around 2 years worth of films to watch unless they start releasing them.

@dracula - Regardless of what WW84 does they won't even think about what to do with Black Widow again until probably March as they see where the pandemic situation is, they already moved it to May so they are in no rush. And with their D+ shows starting to trickle out they don't need BW to drive subs like HBOMax needs WW84.

Wonder Woman 1984 didin't look all that impressive and the entire plot for the film has leaked online. On the other hand, the character is incredibly popular so even with these things working against it, it probably would've made a ton of money. I just wonder now if this will be Gadot's final time playing the character...

This. So much this. There’s really no way to duplicate that feeling of seeing it on opening night. Those Thursday showings be crazy because everyone be fans and looking to have a good time. I can’t wait until the theaters, and the world for that matter, is safe because that’s a feeling I’d miss like going to blockbuster

Yeah, Disney’s not run by morons who openly want their movies to fail

There is zero chance Black Widow, and probably every MCU movie, will not be released in theaters.

Why would they? They have Mandalorian to draw in an audience on Disney+ for December subscriptions, Soul coming out, WandaVision as a marvel property for January and February. A vaccine in getting closer and closer. It only makes good business sense to play the long game and wait for the May release date to determine what they will do.

@MrDandy - I think you overestimate the Mandalorian.

MrDandy - 11/19/2020, 6:19 PM
@Kozmik - how so? Disney+ now has 70 million subscribers and Mandalorian is easily their flagship property and show on the streaming platform. It will have 3 weeks worth of episodes in December

@MrDandy - As in by "easily" you mean you have no idea what's driving those subscriptions. And sure The Mandalorian is involved, but to imply that you know to what degree it figures in is just nonsense.

After all, one could easily say that Disney+ was on a tear also because it's the only place to see Disney content, but continue to credit that to The Mandalorian.
