BLACK ADAM Director Jaume Collet-Serra Teases Justice Society Of America Vs. Dwayne Johnson's Anti-Hero

Black Adam director Jaume Collet-Serra has teased the role of the Justice Society of America in the upcoming DC Comics adaptation, confirming that they'll be squaring off with Dwayne Johnson's anti-hero.

Black Adam may be an origin story for its title hero, but the movie also promises to introduce us to the DCEU's take on the Justice Society of America. The team will consist of Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and director Jaume Collet-Serra tells Total Film that they're an "integral" part of the movie.

"You have a couple of seasoned veterans, like Hawkman and Doctor Fate, and you have a couple of newbies like Atom Smasher and Cyclone," the filmmaker teases. "And that chemistry and coming together to try to defeat someone who’s undefeatable like Black Adam, creates a lot of interesting situations without having the pressure to carry the whole movie. That’s a much more fresh way in."

Some might argue that a Black Adam movie shouldn't need the JSA, but that superhero team coming together to try and take down the anti-hero is certainly an exciting premise.

For Collet-Serra, the movie just presented the opportunity to put a fresh spin on the genre. "I like to be challenged, and I wanted to create new technology, so we developed the way [Adam] moves, the way that he flies, his costume. And then it trickled down to every other character and the movie itself. But there was always the goal – to be new and unique in the storytelling in every aspect of it."

We're keen to see more from Black Adam, and it's possible the trailer will drop in time for The Matrix Resurrections. Either way, based on past experience, we're expecting Dwayne Johnson to hype the blockbuster up on social media with plenty of reveals when the marketing campaign begins.

Black Adam will thunder into theatres on July 29, 2022.
