Not much is known about Marvel's
Black Widow standalone movie, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming one of the studio's most anticipated projects. This week, we learned that
Stranger Things and
Hellboy star David Harbour
is joining the cast, with speculation that he'll be playing an "older male contemporary" of Natasha Romanov.
As per usual, Marvel remains tight-lipped on the actor's role, but that didn't stop Entertainment Tonight from asking Harbour for any sort of details on the movie.
"Yeah man, like I want to do the movie," Harbour said while laughing and adding that if he spoiled anything that
"[Marvel would] kick me out so fast."
While Harbour couldn't share any juicy details, he did boast about director Kate Shortland, while offering two vague, but intriguing descriptors.
Look here's what I will say. It's being directed by this woman Kate Shortland who is a phenomenal director. She directed a movie called Lore. She's a phenomenal director, so what's really exciting to me about it is it's gonna be like a real deep, interesting film. And so yeah, I'm just excited for it as a film as well as a superhero movie.
That
Black Widow will be more than just your typical superhero movie is intriguing, but not unexpected given what Marvel has put out these past few years. With films like
Black Panther and
Captain Marvel, the studio has prided itself on delivering blockbuster movies that offer more than just CGI and generic superhero adventures.
Elsewhere in the interview, Harbour discussed the pressure to get in shape at the gym now that he's "action star of the year." Admitting he doesn't "love" working out, he realizes that it's now a year-round task for him now. He also admitted that fellow
Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson will be
"in far better shape than me, but that's fine."
Marvel has released a synopsis for Black Widow, confirming it will be a prequel set prior to the events of the first Avengers movie. More specifically, it's "an internationally-set story centering on Natasha Romanoff, a spy and assassin who grew up being trained by the KGB before breaking from their grasp and becoming an agent of SHIELD and Avenger."
Black Widow does not yet have an official release date.
