Natasha Romanoff's story came to an end in Avengers: Endgame, but Scarlett Johansson will get the opportunity to tell one final tale when she returns as the character in the upcoming Black Widow movie.
Set between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the hope among fans is that the spinoff will set the stage for Yelena Belova to take over the mantle in future stories. Time will tell on that front, of course, but in the Black Widow: The Official Movie Special Book (which is now on sale from Titan Books), actress Florence Pugh reveals more details on where we find her character when she's reunited with her "sister."
"[She's] annoying little sister that says everything that comes to her mind with no consequences. When we meet her she is kind of discovering the world in a new light," Pugh explains. "She is hurt and complicated and acts out. When she meets Scarlett's character, Natasha, Yelena is kind of rediscovering who she is after being in the Red Room for so long."
"So together they realize that they're both suffering in very similar ways. There is a lovely and unique friendship between the two of them because they are ultimately long-lost sisters. They repair one another and each other's holes in their lives. At the heart of it is this very brutal journey figuring out who they are, and...there actually is this very sad story at the bottom of it."
It definitely doesn't sound like Yelena will be as villainous as her comic book counterpart, but the two women clearly have a complicated relationship. It would seem a little redundant for her to turn on Natasha, but the fact that the Avenger is wearing Yelena's vest when she joins Captain America's Secret Avengers could point to a sad end for the character.
