Chatting with USA Today from the set in England, while filming for Marvel & Joe Johnston's much-anticipated Captain America: The First Avenger movie was underway, the star Chris Evans and Producer Stephen Broussard subtly elaborates on what makes Steve Rogers paramount and more.

"Steve has been dealt kind of a lousy hand in life," Evans says. "He's 5-foot-nothing. He's 110 pounds. He's got a lot of ailments, but it hasn't made him bitter or jaded or anything. Even after he's given this great gift, he still continues to do the right thing, not to prove anything to anyone other than himself. He just has this great moral code."

"The first cover issue of Cap punching Hitler was definitely a political statement," says producer Stephen Broussard. "Like today, the country was divided and there were people who thought we should go over there and do the right thing, and there were others who said it was Europe's war and to stay out of it."

"Captain America was invented essentially for American propaganda. I mean, who was going to be like, 'Nah, the Nazis, they were OK. They had a few (good ideas)!'" Evans jokes. "It's safe to say we can all agree it's pure evil, right there. So it's fantastic to create a character of pure good, pure honesty and true morality, and say this is ultimate bad against ultimate good."

Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters July 22, in 3D!

Basically Pre Serum Cap is just the Marvel Universes Rudy.
Either way, if this movie doesn't find a way recreate the Cap-punches-Hitler scene from that cover, I'll be pissed - the single most American image of all time !!!F*!CK YEAH!!!

@HavocT, haha that may be true. There's all this build up and then the guy falls into the ocean and freezes in a glacier... haha, but if what we've heard about the bookends is true the opening scene of the movie shows the Avengers, or Shield finding Cap in the glacier so in that sense the it might not be such a big deal.

When Evans is running in that white tee after the car, man he looks just like Steve Rodgers. It's uncanny really. I just hope that I can still relate to him once the helmet is on, that still remains to be seen.

WellDrawn So far, there isn't much to indicate (other than a lot of double talk) that Nazi's, let alone Hitler, will play any significant role in this movie. Their part will be added sparingly to shut fans up and say HEY, SEE, THERE'S SOME NAZI'S!!! They want to sell toys so they replaced the army with Hydra. Or at least that's what it looks like. If the Nazi's were a core threat, I think that would have been made clear in the trailer. Instead, there's this Attack of the Clones scene with Hydra soldiers and lazer guns. Whatever. THOR will make Cap better by association. They're smart to release them in this order.

@neobaggins- spot on. thats exactly what im expecting. Maybe one or two names drops of hitler and maybe one or two swastikas to show its ww2. kinda disappointing really...... i was hoping for a real period piece.

@jazzman That Glitch Mob track will be absolutely EPIC in The Avengers trailer, let alone Captain America!!! Just imagine at the end of the trailer we see the Avengers side by side and then one of the members directly speaks to the audience while this track is playing in the background and saying - "That is the day when we assemble."

Didn't they already confirm that they are gonna reenact the iconic "punching Hitler" scene in one of the USO Shows that Cap preforms in?

If so, then [frick] YEAH!!

Mr. Evans, after 7/22/11 you'll be known as Captain America! Human Torch you are no more, those movies are already forgettable as it is and as soon as this hits... The world will be waiting for you to say.... AVENGERS... ASSEMBLE!!!

I agree with the sentiment here...the more I see of Chris Evans, and the more I hear him interviewed, the happier I am he got the part. Judging by what he says, he understands and actually CARES about why Steve Rogers is so special and so important. Even if he is just blowing sunshine up our collective arses, at least he cares enough to 'say the right thing.' Plus, he is really looking like Steve in the trailer and the stills. When he asks what Peggy thinks of the new shield, he has that earnest, "gee whiz" kind of look you'd expect out of a 'newbie' Cap, before he is all battle-hardened.

Plus, remember the story someone posted here back in the summer about Evans making a special effort to get a picture or autograph or something to a kid? Seems to be a genuinely good guy, which is awesome to have in OUR Cap!

@113: Yeah, I was never against Evans as Cap, I just never thought he of all people would be the top choice, or even considered for the role.
But I think this film is gonna stray him away from the "comedic-arrogant" typecast that he been apart of, which I think is the main reason why people had their doubts about Evans as Captain America.

Im very glad of how is turning out to be so far. GO CHRIS and GO CAP!

Plus, its very glad to see everyone come around

Captain America's first appearance was in March of 1941, Pearl harbor was bombed in Dec 1941...he was invented by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby as a way for them to speak out against what the Nazi's were doing even before what happened at pearl harbor...America wasn't even in the war yet when J.S and Kirby created him and weren't really interested in getting involved, so not sure he was created as tool of American propaganda, but I may be wrong. For the record: I am not American.
@NeoBaggins They mentioned Hitler in the trailer, Cap's fighting Hydra during World War II, I'd say that was a significant contribution by the Third Reich right there. :)

ComicBandit They mentioned Hitler, and that's a "significant contribution". Then, what do you call this?

Not looking for a Nazi movie, just pointing out a few things that are significant to the character. Nice Avatar. THOR is kicking ass and taking names.
