THE MARVELS Star Teyonah Parris Confirms That Monica Rambeau Will Take Flight In The MCU Sequel

Although it wasn't released online, the first trailer for The Marvels debuted during Marvel Studios' D23 presentation on Saturday, and the cast took part in interviews along with the rest of the stars in attendance following the panel.

While speaking to Marvel Entertainment, Teyonah Parris confirmed that her character, Monica Rambeau, will indeed have the power of flight in the Captain Marvel sequel.

"Being able to fully realize Monica’s powers and flying, and it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, we have a Black female superhero on the screen with these other amazing female superheroes.’ So, it’s just like, ‘Oooh, woman power!’ And being led by an amazing woman, so yeah, that was my favorite part. Girl power.”

Though Rambeau - who will most likely take the monicker Photon - didn't demonstrate this particular ability in WandaVision, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise given the hero's comic book history.

Fans were disappointed that no official footage was shared (the audio did leak, however), but based on the descriptions, The Marvels sounds like a blast.

Apparently, the movie will focus on the three heroes - Rambeau, Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan - trading places every time they use their powers. They then decide to join forces in an attempt to fix their problem. We've also heard that the movie will contain "musical elements," but that's yet to be confirmed.

British actress Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat, Velvet Buzzsaw) is on board as the main villain, who is rumored to be a gender-swapped take on Kree warrior Ael-Dan. In addition, Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that he will appear as Nick Fury. Nia DaCosta, who also helmed the Ms. Marvel season finale's post-credit scene, will direct from a script by WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell.

The sequel is set to fly into theaters next year.
