DAMIAN: SON OF BATMAN #3 by Andy Kubert
I'm highly indifferent about this mini-series. It's not that great, but I can't look away and I probably get slightly more enjoyment out of it than most critics on the internet. Call it morbid curiosity or a fondness for Batman books that offer a "what if?" scenario. There's just something about a title like this that makes me plop down a few bucks when it hits shelves.
The book starts out with an injured Damian/ Batman essentially floating down a river of sewage and being rescued by Alfred. Soon after, a death of a major supporting Batman character occurs. You would figure that such a significant death would cause great impact, but the execution makes it feel like Damian just lost his postal carrier. This leads us directly into his relationship with his cat (the same one from
Batman #666), which I will not spoil entirely. Let's just say I never thought
Sabrina The Teenage Witch would ever draw parallels to a Batman story. A new Joker appears at the end and is seemingly a copycat, but will perhaps be fleshed out in the concluding issue.
I honestly can't recommend this comic for everyone, but if you can relate to what I said in the first paragraph, you might want to keep reading this short series. Andy Kubert's art is frame worthy as usual and I found the dialogue to be a tad better than what was found in the previous two issues. This can be a fun ride if you like future Batman stories like
The Dark Knight Returns,
Batman Beyond,
Year 100, or Morrison's stories of Damian as Batman, the latter of which this is derived from. Just know that it's not in the same league as those, so buy at your own risk.
Score: 6.5/ 10.
