BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR, a French comic by Julie Maroh, was turned into a 3 hour film by acclaimed Tunisian director Abdelatif Kechiche and today won the biggest award in all of world cinema. This award demonstrates the widening scope of comic books and the films based on them.

The comic and the film chart a passionate love affair between two women. The film features extremely explicit sex scenes including a 20 minute oral sex scene between the two lead characters. When released state side, it is almost sure to get a NC17 rating but its wide critical acclaim and the Palme D'Or at Cannes might give it wide visibility.

Also in a coup by the jury, led by Steven Spielberg and including the likes of Nicole Kidman, Christoph Waltz and Ang Lee, the Palme D'or was awarded to both the actresses - Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux - along with the director - Abdellatif Kechiche.

You can see images below from the award ceremony, the film's poster and images from the comic.

The film is expected to release later this year.

Wow Brainiac you really have turned into a huge troll.

As for this, well based on a comic book has lost a lot of its meaning because the format is now used for all sorts of stories. The days when it meant horror, fantasy or superheroes exclusively are over.

Look at films like Road To Perdition or History of Violence for recent examples

A french comic book about two lesbians going down on each other? Ummm, yeah, sounds like an award winner to me! Who needs those damn Avengers when you have french lesbians going at it in comic books?

If an American made a comic with two lesbians and then took it to Cannes, it would be considered porn. Make it French and it is art.
If that is the case then if you have some of the biggest art enthusiasts in the world right here on this site!

Ugh.
Another [frick]ing Artsy BS movie that gets an award simply because it's "daring". DON'T kid yourselves. They say that this movie was going to anger a lot of people with it's taboo content and so they gave it an award. [frick]ing Hipsters.
Also, they booed and walked out of Only God Forgives, which looks absolutely amazing! (Ryan Gosling + Nikolas Windig Refn FTW!).
[frick] Hipsters.
