COMICS: Which Classic X-MEN Villain Returns In UNCANNY AVENGERS #4? Find Out Here!

This week's Uncanny Avengers #4 looked ahead to three months from now in the Marvel Universe and things are clearly not going well for Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Which villain is responsible for their troubles? Hit the jump to find out! [WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD]

Writer Rick Remender has already brought back the Red Skull, and we know from future solicitations that both Apocalypse and Kang the Conquerer aren't too far behind! Well, in a flashforward to three months from now (not literally three months for US; we're talking about actual "time" in the Marvel Universe), we find out who is responsible for a Days of Future Past like Earth; Onslaught! However, this version of the villain (a character who once caused the apparent death of almost all of Marvel's major superheroes) is the same Red Skull who recently fused his brain with that of Charles Xavier. The final page of Uncanny Avengers #4 can be found below along with comments from Remender.

"As we were building the story we were looking for the escalation for the fourth arc, the story that takes place in the second year, and I wanted something recognizable that naturally fit with our plans. It was sitting right in front of me but I never saw it; editor Tom Brevoort pointed out to me that Onslaught was the perfect fit."

"From there about another hundred ideas bubbled up and it fit perfectly with the other plans that we had. It's going to be an entirely different thing than what we saw in the '90s, an entirely different character with an entirely different set of motives. I don't want to give much else away — I think people know how the original Onslaught came into being, and that it has a direct connection to Charles Xavier."

Onslaught was a tad bit too overpowered, but still cool nonetheless

Onslaught was a really weird concept... wasn't he, like, the evil side of Professor X's psyche, combined with half of Magneto's mind or something? Such a silly, trippy idea.

Ugh. They shamed him TERRIBLY in Onslaught Unleashed (for those who havent read it, consider yourself fortunate). Such a horrendous mini for such a huge villian... I've really hated Uncanny Avengers thus far and by the looks of this, doubt it'll change.

I couldn't take any of this seriously after I saw Red Skull pull Professor X's brain out of his skull. Maybe if this was a Looney Tunes cartoon I could except that.

No way.
I've been getting that Onslaught feeling a lot, lately, with AU and all the rumors of a new Marvel Universe and such. Onslaught was typical '90s shite, but it was bloody exciting! Marvel had just gone bankrupt and it could have very well served as an actual swan song for 616, but then ToyBiz came along and Heroes Return happened and everything went back to normal, but they were dark times, man. Everything was getting cancelled (and that was before comics were relaunched every 3 seconds). I think Incredible Hulk, Journey Into Mystery and Uncanny X-Men were the only long-standing survivor's of that event and they have all since been cancelled (Legacy renumbering doesn't count).

MARVELPSYCHO79@ Jim Lee's Iron Man was pretty cool, too. They dove straight into the alcoholic suicidal nihilism, with him getting pissed and stepping onto the edge of the balcony, in the first issue.

This seriously makes me wanna add 'Uncanny Avengers' to my pull list.

I LOVED Onslaught in the 90's.. he was such a force! And Hulk ending him..? In one Punch?! Great.

I follow auite a few Marvel NOW! titles, and there's something great happening here.

For those that don't know ****SPOILER ALERT****...possibly: Charles Xavier returns to his son Legion on the last page of the latest issue of 'X-Men Legacy'.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be mean, it just seems implausible to me that a comic fan hasn't heard of Onslaught.

That line is from one of the most f***ed up moments of all time in comic books.

People can say what they want (Looking at you Buy Pile Guy) but this book is comics at it's best. Fans keep talking about how they want new stuff, well here it is (conceptually anyways). Red Skull with Xavier's power is a pretty frightening concept an a genius way to bring the X Men and Avengers onto one team. Some people might object to the Onslaught business, but again, I think that's genius. No one was using the concept anyways and it makes sense in a strange way. Then you've an issue featuring young Thor fighting young Apocalypse. Who hasn't wanted to see that? Yeah I'd say it's safe to say this book has struck a cord with me.

Remender has brought in A Red Skull. I would love it if he brought back THE Red Skull.

I haven't been keeping up - isn't Magneto half of Onslaught, or has that been retconned?

What made Onslaught cool was it was Magneto AND Prof X. This is just silly.

Honestly, I didn't hate Onslaught at the time of his first appearance, though I did find it to be a typical overblown '90s event and ultimately utterly forgettable. I do hold a grudge against the character for being responsible for bringing the bottom-feeding filth that was "heroes reborn". DON'T get me started on that... That filth and vermin-infested turd ball replaced two of my all-time favorite runs on comics with Image filth that wasn't worth dignifying by using as toilet paper.

Red Skull with Charles Xavier mental powers and the Magneto's maximum pre-phoenix incident magnetic power??? Maybe he must wear the Jugernaut helm and the Thor's hammer to be "a little more" powerful. Good for Red Skull, time to kick some heroes ass!!
