After writing so much on DC, I almost forgot to review the series I'm most loyal to: The Amazing Spider-Man. Spider-Island has been a unique fun ride so far, how does part two stack up? Read on.
The plot continues the rampage of the powered-up citizens as they battle the Avengers and the FF. Spider-Man is caught in the middle, forced to leave the battlefield because any hero could mistake him for one of the attackers. So as Peter Parker, he mounts a defensive with good citizens. Meanwhile, the Jackel and the mysterious woman's plan deepens.....
Not bad at all. Sadly, this issue was really underwhelming.
I don't like Peter in this issue. I haven't liked him all that much since Brand New Day. His character seems like a downgrade from his pre-Brand New Day status. Instead of taking control, he comes off as a rookie to the whole superhero thing. Other people are taking charge. I also don't like the comical undertone Slott puts in these stories.
The majority of this issue is a boring battle between the bad citizens, Avengers, FF, Peter, and the good citizens. I find the scenes with Jackal and the mysterious woman fascinating, but we only get like a page of them.
After reading the new Justice League, the art here is quite sad in comparison. It's too cartoony, and some panels make Peter look like a deformed evil person. After the powerful Statue of Liberty cover from the Prelude and the nice shot of Spidey and the Avengers from Part One, the cover here looks like a downgrade. It isn't a cover for a big event, it could pass as a run-of-the-mill cover.
Anti-Venom makes a nice little appearance here. I'm intrigued by his role, and I hope it gets deepened in the future issues of this event. Madame Web gets another "I see the future" appearance. This time, it isn't annoying. She refers to Venom and Anti-Venom both having roles in this event, but "one of their stories will end." Thanks to my great deducing skills, I know it's not Venom. There are many reasons why, but I'll name two. Anti-Venom has been a low-key player, he disappeared off the Marvel universe for like a year before getting a three issue mini-series. Plus in the letter column, they said that "Venom will become a bigger player in the Marvel universe." As much as I hate to say it, I could see Anti-Venom not making it through this event. (I hope I'm wrong.)
In closing, I was disappointed with this issue. It's lacking the scope and epic feel of the last two. Maybe because it's too "light" and hard to take seriously sometimes. And I get this strange feeling about Madame Web.....I'm going to go on a limb and say she could be the mysterious woman Jackal is working for.
I give this issue a 7/10.
