JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Ray Fisher Explains Why He Believes A CYBORG Movie Is Unlikely To Happen

Warner Bros. announced plans for a Cyborg movie when they first revealed their slate of DC Comics movies but we've heard nothing for years now and Ray Fisher seemingly has some ideas about why that is...

There may have been plans for a Cyborg movie once upon a time but it's been clear for a while now that the movie isn't really a priority for Warner Bros. Fans didn't really gravitate towards the character in Justice League and director Zack Snyder's decision to make him an almost fully CGI creation means a solo outing would be massively expensive, something Ray Fisher believes could be the main issue.

Here's what the actor had to say about Cyborg's future at New Jersey's Heroes & Villains FanFest.

"I don't know. I can't comment on that specifically, because they don't tell me anything until the very last minute. There's a ton of people making those kind of decisions behind the scenes. And it would be a very, very costly movie to make because it is so CGI heavy with Cyborg, because I'm the only member of the League that's not in a practical costume. You're going to be looking at $200 million just to make it. So it's one of those things you have to take into consideration. It's a numbers game for some people at the end of the day."

A new Cyborg has been cast for DC Universe's Titans and Doom Patrol TV shows, while the company is also said to be looking for a different actor to take on the role of Silas Stone. As a result, it's easy to imagine Fisher's version of the hero falling by the wayside, especially as there's seemingly no longer any plans for Victor Stone to show up in The Flash now the film is no longer adapting "Flashpoint."

Fisher, however, is trying to stay positive. "If we keep making noise, it can happen. It's about what the people want. And that's what people understand, that's what they recognize," he concluded.

I really like Ray, his performance surprised me in jl. Hope he gets more roles, maybe one as a villain.

A CGI heavy look was not a necessity, probably a Snyder call, no reason it couldn't have been practical with CGI enhancement, upper body especially, the face covering is basically a Phantom of the Opera mask, Peter Weller's performance was helped by wearing a suit, helped him work on his physicality and movement, strange decision, The Iron Man suit has lost a lot becoming all CGI too, should always try to stay practical when possible.

@ARMUS - This. Make something mostly practical. It's 2018. We can do it I'm sure. And everyone would say "Hey, that looks real."

@VoiceofReason - the best Iron Man shots are typically the ones with a practical suit at least mixed in.

They can do it.

Rewatched IM 1 earlier this year, the practical shots haven't aged a bit due to some incredible wire work that they did - the CGI can be glaringly obvious.

My only visual complaint with recent MCU decisions has been the move towards more CGI heavy outfits, and occasionally that just isn't necessary (re: BP's purple powered suit vs. the practical one from CW)

@Imfunnyhow - I wanted a "Justice League" film directed entirely by Zack Snyder. I didn't want, a Donner caricature of Superman, or Batman re-imagined with Tony Stark's personality. I didn't want the most generic superhero team movie I have ever seen. I wanted the film that seemed reminiscent of "Lord of the Rings", that explored the personal lives of every member (for more than just one or two scenes each) of the League before bringing them together, and showing how their lives are changed for the better afterward.

With Trailer Park's "Suicide Squad" and Frankenstein's monster "Justice League", Warner Bros. didn't know or care what I wanted, or what a large number of other people wanted. All they cared about was being liked by those people pissed at "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman".

@TyrantBossMedia - BP was a bit of an exception as it’s CG was really bad on the shits but great in everything else. I still don’t rewlly get how some all CG characters like Thanos, Groot, and Ricketvlook incredible but Black Panther, Spiderman, and Proxima Midnight looked so bad

@ARMUS -

Exactly.

1. Does WB really want to be the studio, post Black Panther, to take away a black lead's film after announcing it?

2. If Cyborg can be done on the streaming service, he can be done on film.

3. Practical effects. There's no reason Cyborg should blow through a $200M budget.

@SisterSunday52 -

You know, I appreciate WB's attempts at experimenting with DC heroes, but looking back, it was always going to be a risk, especially if you put it all in the hands of Zack Snyder. Had I been in the room making decisions, I would have gone with crowd pleasers first.

If Disney can make cash, hand over fist, doing remakes, why can't WB? Instead of letting Goyer and Snyder and Terrio and Affleck write these films, WB/DC should have simply re-made the Superman, Batman/Superman movie, and Suicide Squad: Escape from Arkham animated movies into live action films.

Wonder Woman is fine as is, but that's because WB/DC didn't deviate too wildly from what the public sees her as. JL could have been more ambitious than a simple alien invasion. Personally, I would have gone with Starro and made JL a zombie/body snatcher film set in Australia.

But, that's what happens when you let Snyder do more than direct or produce. He's not a good storyteller. Man of Steel was his best received film in the DCEU and he had nothing to do with the story, aside from Superman killing Zod, and we see how divisive that was.

But, all that's done now. The DCEU belongs to Walter Hamada and his new crew of talent, led by Patty Jenkins, James Wan, and Cathy Yan.

@Ha1frican - I thought Thanos looked good about half the time, especially on blu ray. Also, Ruffalo's head floating in the Hulkbuster was especially bad.

Frankly, I'm kinda tired of Ruffalo's Bruce Banner. He just phones it in these days.

@Battabing - i really wish Edward Norton were still in the role... However having said that i know it world be impossible... He wouldn't stand for the restrictions that Disney places on those movies.

@TyrantBossMedia - I love the idea for the purple glow from the black suit, the colors work together so well, but nothing has beat that practical suit from CW in terms of visual quality.

That final fight is as weirdly weightless as thor in the AOU opening, which was one of the first times a first watch of an mcu film had any CGI stick out to me.
ftf530
ftf530 - 9/10/2018, 1:34 PM
@Ha1frican - that's why the decision to keep having him in a CGI suit instead of the original practical one makes NO sense!

they could definitely add the purple glow to a practical suit.

I think they have more trouble doing characters that are wearing something rather than one's who are primarily more like something that already exists in our reality. I think the later is ironically easier to make photo real than the slim outline of a person in a suit.

@TyrantBossMedia - There's a handful that they use on everything, that has become a little bit larger recently due to upscaling to 3 films per year, which is incoincidentally when some of these CGI issues became a bit more in your face than they used to be.

I feel bad for the guy. He was pretty much all in on all levels for the DCEU, and now his character's in limbo. So far it feels like Gadot and Momoa are the only League members who weren't [frick]ed over to some degree.

@Kyos - yeah the fact that we don't know whats going on in Warner bros. is really irritating..it's like they're clueless about what they're doing
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 9/10/2018, 5:10 AM
@Kyos - And those two were also the riskiest casts on paper, and yet... they handle themselves the best with the material. Weird how that worked out.

Spock0Clock - 9/10/2018, 5:18 AM
Also I definitely feel bad for Fisher, too. The guy did everything he was asked to do and more, but they wrote a character with zero charisma who was more-or-less a walking plot point. You sign on to something like this, you can only do your part and hope for the best, and none of this mess is his fault.
ftf530
ftf530 - 9/10/2018, 7:56 AM
@ButIAmBruceW - they really need to take the risk in finding someone to head up a truly separated division, as it's own company, not as a WB imprint, if they want to try figuring this out.

Feels like they're really busy just trying whatever script is most ready next.

@Spock0Clock - I felt the "0 charisma" was the robot part of him dominating his personality. He was still trying to come to terms with being part man and part robot so his human side was being overshadowed by his robotic side. I felt as the movie progressed he became "warmer" and more human and by the time his solo movie debuted we would have the fun pizza loving Cyborg we all know...I believe that was the angle they were going for, I could be wrong though.

I really don't think this movie is happening. Shame because Ray Fisher was decent and out of the whole cast seemed to be having the most fu besides Momoa
