DC Studios' Video Games Will Fill In The Gaps Between Movies And TV Shows Confirms James Gunn

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has addressed the place of video games in the new DCU slate, revealing that the idea is for them to fill in some of the gaps between movies and TV shows. Read on for details...

The MCU is an all-encompassing shared world, but DC Studios' plans for the DCU actually appear even more ambitious than what Kevin Feige and company are busy doing.

As well as delivering movies, TV shows and animated projects that all take place within the same world with the same actors, James Gunn and Peter Safran also intend to squeeze video games into their vision. Those take much longer to make than your typical feature film, so it's clearly going to be a while before we get to enter the DCU in the most interactive way possible.

Talking to DC.com (via GameFragger.com), Gunn shared some insights into how games will be included in plans for "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters."

"It's not like we're going to have the Superman movie come out and have this Superman game come out," the DC Studios co-CEO explains. "It's more like we'll have the Superman film come out, then maybe two years later, we have the Supergirl movie coming out. So, what's the story in between there?"

"Is there a Krypto game that we can play that comes in between them? Something that's still set in the world with these characters, but is its own thing. We want to give the prominence to games that they deserve."

It's an interesting decision and one that could prove surprisingly divisive. For starters, we're sure voiceover actors won't be happy about being sidelined for movie and television talent, while everything being set in the same world...well, it runs the risk of creating fatigue.

On the other hand, it's a very exciting concept and one that has the potential to expand the DCU in a way that not even the MCU has since launching in 2008.

There are a number of what we're guessing will now be "Elseworlds" games on the way, of course, including Rocksteady's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Monolith Productions' Wonder Woman

How do you feel about DC Studios' video game plans?

Well? Is there?

I'm barely invested in capeshit as it is, I'm not putting an extra like $50 to find out what happens between two films.

Thankfully for me there's always Youtube Let's Plays.

As long as it doesn't mean rushing games or forcing people to buy and play them to understand what's going on narratively that's fine I guess.

@Spagett - I just hope they're a step above the early mcu games like the iron man one.

bringing video games into this is an awful idea, one of dc's bright spots was the arkham and injustice series'. marvel games has so many promising titles coming up - wolverine, spider-man 2, the cap/black panther game, that it'd be a shame for dc to be creatively backed into making movie tie-ins exclusively.

@tmp3 - This is exactly where they will lose their general audience. Comic Tie ins, TV shows, and games are specific target audiences that are already watching the movies. But the mass majority on non followers of different forms of media. You have no idea how many people I had to explain why Wanda was evil in Multiverse of Madness. None of them saw or knew of Wandavision.

@tmp3 - I agree with this. Games can do things that movies can't and they shouldn't be held back by having to tie in or feel gaps

I think while the games will be set in the same world and be apart of the overall story they will be more full in the in between stories rather than anything super vital. You probably won’t have to play the games to be able to watch the next film, but if you are curious about certain plot threads then the games can explain them.

Or somesh*t like that

Brilliant marketing strategy. People especially the die yards will feel compelled to buy the video games.

as long as those things arent required viewing or playing to understand movies, it should be no problem.

Video game part sounds like ass. Better if they have their own stories not beholden to anything else. Gonna handicap creativity. This DCU is just consuming everything it seems

@GhostDog - we went from nothing being connected to everything being connected. feels like whiplash.

@tmp3 - It could work who knows, but the video games being their own little universe is a part of the fun. What Insomniac is creating is special. Arkham was special.

We just needs good movies first and let’s go from there.

@GhostDog - i feel like it would have been cooler to have one continuity for the movies/tv shows, one for the games and one for animation. arkham and dcau already proved how good the latter two could be untethered from the burden of being a movie tie-in.
