It's fair to say that Warner Bros. gained a bit of a reputation for studio interference over the years - particularly when it came to its DC-based movies. Though every studio is guilty of it to some extent, WB reportedly "butchered" David Ayer's Suicide Squad to the point that it was almost unrecognizable to the film he originally shot, and don't even get us started on the Justice League debacle.
Though certain things have likely been exaggerated or blown out of proportion, many fans feel that the previous Warner Bros. regime is to blame for the DCEU's failings.
So, how do recently-appointed DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran plan to mitigate this potential minefield as they oversee the new DCU era? Basically, they won't have to!
Gunn reassured a fan on Mastadon that there's no need to worry about WBD execs "overriding" his decisions by making it clear that things will be working a little differently on his watch than they did back in the "Snyder era."
“The position is different than it was with Zack, etc. Peter & I are the heads of DC Studios. The only studio interference would be from us!”
A recent report indicated that certain execs have expressed concern about Gunn's lack of experience in this sort of role. Whether that's true or not, he appears to have taken a lot of responsibility on board here, and it sounds like he and Safran will be wielding about the same level of power as Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige.
As things stand, it's looking like a full reboot is being implemented, although Gunn hasn't outright confirmed as much just yet. We know that Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson are out as their respective characters (for the time being, anyway), but we're still waiting to hear from the likes of Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa. Zachary Levi indicated that he'll be staying on as Shazam last night.
