SHAZAM! Star Zachary Levi Responds To Rumor That He's "Done" As The Hero

A reliable source recently indicated that Zachary Levi was "done" as Shazam, and the Fury of the Gods star has now taken to Twitter to share his response to the rumor...

By MarkCassidy - Dec 20, 2022 04:12 PM EST

Zachary Levi seemed pretty confident that his pals James Gunn and Peter Safran would allow his tenure as Shazam to continue in the new DCU during a recent interview, but a report from a (mostly) reliable insider suggested that the actor would be joining Henry Cavill on the caped superhero unemployment line.

One of Levi's Twitter followers expressed their disappointment that he might be leaving the role, and he responded with the following.

"Oooh, I really wouldn’t go believing everything you see on the internet. I’m Gucci, Ash. We all Gucci."

So, as far as Levi is concerned, he is very much still on board as Billy Batson/Shazam and seemingly expects to remain in the role post Fury of the Gods.

Gunn hasn't addressed Levi's future, specifically, but did appear to indicate that not everyone from the DCEU era would be recast (at least, we think that's what he meant?), so perhaps he really is safe.

Or is he having an Alexandra Shipp moment?

This comment by Alexandra Shipp seems to have aged pretty well at the moment : r/xmen

I don't think Shazam is a character that needs to be recast. Although the first movie did reference some of the current DCEU characters, his story isn't tied up in that continuity as much as Henry's Superman, Gal's Wonder Woman, Jason's Aquaman and Ben's Batman is. The movie was pretty much it's own thing and it looks like Fury of the Gods could be the same.

I could see Zachary's Shazam quite easily slipping into the new DCU without any confusion.

@bcom - unless they use the Snyder suit still moving forward with whoever they recast as Superman in Gunns DCU, then Shazam is tied to the Snyderverse with the headless Superman cameo which was essentially just the Snyder suit cameoing.

@KWilly -

Why doesn't she have a Twitter anymore?

@KWilly - In her defense, that tweet was made after she already played Storm in Apocalypse and two years before Dark Phoenix came out. And guess what? Storm wasn't recast for that movie.

I hope he is done as Shazam can't stand him in the role.

@marvel72 - Why don't you just sit down if can't stand? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@MochaKing - No I don't like he's portrayal of Shazam. When I've read comic books with Shazam in them like say Kingdom Come and Justice.
I read the character as if when he is young Billy he's a child but when he transforms into Shazam he becomes an adult a man, that doesn't act or sound like a child.

Hence the Wisdom Of Solomon.

I think it’s possible he stays, since Saffrin has produced both movies and Gunn recommended Levi for the role.

Maybe they could recast Billy’s actor to be younger and keep Levi as Shazam, just to keep him young?

I’m kinda hoping some parts can be retooled, as other movies have done, like Robbie as Harley, Davis as Waller etc

I liked Levi in the role. Its the characterizations that didn't make sense. As Billy he is fairly mature but as soon as he changes to Shazam he becomes very immature and behaves like a child. Then he's so pure at heart yet we find him tricking the police and stealing his sandwich. And the villain is the one we should be feeling sorry for as a child being bullied by his family is turned into the bad guy. Still liked the movie though.

The more I think about it, the more I think it was a mistake for Warners and Gunn to make any kind of announcements, even minor Twitter comments, until the last of the DCEU movies are released. Because now you have actors like Levi, who's movie isn't even out yet, having to defend against rumors that his character is done. Kinda seems like they shot themselves in the foot from a financial perspective as well, as the GA may just not care about these movies when they know a reboot is right around the corner.

@FreelancePeacekeeper - That will, in part, depend upon how much of the general audience actually cares that much about that. I know many who don't, and are just seeing them because they look like good action flicks.

@LSHF - Yeah, you may be right about the general audience. Still think it's a little crappy for actors like Levi who are being put on the defense right before their movies are released.
I feel like the interviews at the premieres of these last few DCEU films are going to be awkward (especially the Flash)

@FreelancePeacekeeper - I agree 100%. They should all be given something to officially tell the press because as we all know, they are going to get asked.

I mean, technically the only toe that the Shazam movies have to the DCEU is the Wizard (since he appeared in Bkack Adam) so it could've worked but I don't know. Sucks because I was really digging the Shazam family!

I am okay if Chuck stays as Shazam.

But does the new DCU even really need Shazam or the Rock...er Black Adam anyway?

If they never returned, would anyone hardly notice?

I guess they could return for some epic Justice League save the universe Infinity War level thing, but... zzzzzzzz....
