With Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet now available on Digital HD and hitting 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray next Tuesday,  I was recently granted an exclusive opportunity to sit down with directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston as well as producer Clark Spencer to talk about their recent blockbuster, which grossed over $505.8 million worldwide ($199M domestic; $306.8M foreign).

Despite heavy competition from fellow critical darlings, Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet, Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has been the clear favorite this ongoing awards season, and is looking increasingly likely to take home Oscar gold this coming Sunday to cap off its extraordinary run - which is undoubtedly something Disney has taken notice of.

Now, while Disney may not hold any stake in the Spider-Man rights at the moment, save for their live-action agreement, they do own a plethora of other Marvel characters and to close out my chat with Rich, Phil, and Clark, I decided to get their thoughts on the competition and whether they'd ever be open to helming an animated Marvel movie.

ROHAN PATEL: I guess they’re technically your competition this year, but with Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse having all this immense success, both critically and commercially, I would imagine Disney with their plethora of Marvel characters as well as the X-Men looking increasingly likely to be on their way soon, would have to be at least open to the idea of animated superhero movies down the line.

Are there any Marvel characters you would want to further explore in an animated medium?

RICH: Do we own Mr. Magoo now? *laughter*

AMY (PR): Don’t forget Big Hero 6 was actually based on a lesser known Marvel comic book series, so we’ve actually had the pleasure of partnering with them already.

RICH MOORE: I think an animated Guardians of the Galaxy would be pretty cool, pretty funny. We did use Baby Groot already though.

PHIL JOHNSTON: Squirrel Girl?

RICH: Look, Spider-Man’s doing really well, we could just take that. *laughs* That’s kind of already in Disney’s pocket. How’s Sony getting away with this?! - *laughs* - It’s our thing, Spider-Verse.

*heavy laughter from everyone*

CLARK SPENCER: Back to your question, there are great characters within Marvel and I think animation is such an incredible world to be able to explore anything, be let alone superhero characters, so it could be amazing.

RICH: I got a good one: Super Feige.

PHIL: Ooh, like Kevin Feige? I like it.

RICH: Mild-mannered producer suddenly has the superpower that he can make these great movies about comic books characters.

PHIL: Although, you know what I'm going to say? I'm going to go totally against this and say the beauty of what has worked at our studio is the original ideas, the stuff that comes out of here. Like I love that we made up these characters and the characters in Zootopia and that kind of doesn't happen that much in big-budget Hollywood movie making anymore. Most things are based on a brand or franchise or something that's already there and so, the fact that we can come up with characters and stories that are wholly original, I think that’s rad because it doesn't happen that much.

I'd like more animated Marvel films by Disney Animation. Big Hero 6 was a great start and with the people behind Wreck-it Ralph and Zootopia at the helm, we could getting something truly special.

I take his point, but still they do things like "Frozen", "Tangled" and "Moana" that are liberally adapted from existing fairytales and myths, and the selling point of "Wreck it Ralph" was mostly the cameos of existing characters.

So while I wouldn't want to see them locked into just adapting stuff, there's certainly room for it and a history of it at Disney Animation, even in the current day.

@BlackStar25 - Personally, I hated it. Loved the first film, but was extremely let down by this. Thought it had a good premise of moving the characters to the internet, but the movie never does anything with it. It introduces a bunch of new characters that are sidelined to the point of feeling like extended cameos. Ralph himself is dumbed WAY down. What he does in this film undercuts what he learned in the first. Characters are also given half baked motivations. The film’s central conflict is dropped in favor of another one that could and should have been introduced better. The movie has a good message, but it just marred by poor writing
