Clocking in at 14minutes a fan made short called Batman Day the Cried has surfaced on the internet.
I had the chance to message the film's director, Collin Peters, and ask him to give a little background of the movie, why he did, and what problems he had.
Collin Peters: It was my last year in college and I just wanted to try something different and since we wouldn't be able to see Heath Ledger play the Joker again I thought it would fun to make a Batman movie of our own and just have fun it.
The Idea: It was inspired by Batman the Killing Joke. I wanted make something with a familiar story line and bring some of the shots to life. Tim Burton made his like a comic book movie come to life and Nolan did his as if it was all real, I did mine with a look of the Mark Hamil and Kevin Conroy animated series come to life.
The Batsuit: Oh it's terrible looking, no DOUBT! But I made this movie with my own money out of pocket, and anyone who goes to college and only works one weekend a month knows you just can't spend money on something thats once and done. You have to think about your future and paying off loans. We did try making molds and using urethane to make a mask but it just didn't work. and I had remembered at Six Flags they wore football pants on the actors for the stunt show, I found a paintball vest online and put a red bat symbol on it to be different, and the cape was made by our Joker actor.
The Joker: He came in last minute, There are so many unreliable people out there and immature people it was a miracle we got him when we did. He did his own makeup, made his costume the flower, and dyed his hair. The original guy didn't even get back to me if he was gonna be in it or not anymore.
Problems: Just look at the film! It's no the greatest but you learn from mistakes. Most nights I didn't have a crew and the project suffered big time. WE couldn't do the whole script which would have more interesting with Harley Quinn and more background of the Joker. But no one would show up. I would get pressured by people asking when it would be done and there is only so much you can do with so many people and trying to do your best at that.
Original script: There would be more Gordon, Harley, Barbra, and even the owner of the chemical factory where Joker was created. But it had to be cut because the semester was almost over and I was graduating soon and wouldn't have access to equipment so a goal became to just make it and finish it.
Backlash of the trailer: You know, I think people just didn't get it. everyone is so spoiled with Nolan making everything real and other fan made movies having a budget that they didn't bother reading that I had no budget and a series of problems making it. Nor do they recognize the fact that I was going for more of a comic book look in the Joker rather than something real, bc its a movie lets get lost in imagination. But damned if you do damned if you don't. Most of us knew that most of the people who saw it and just some negative immature things about it don't even know what it takes to make a movie whether its long or short, and money and crew always help. some teachers and connections I have got it and saw the potential and knew it wasn't the best but if it had been a short with a budget and more production value it would have been much better. Now it is what it is.
Chances of another one: I don't know. If it isn't Nolan or Akham City people just don't like it and don't give some credit for an attempt that is better than some other things they call Batman movies I've seen. But I like to expand my horizons and know more people that could help in more of a production value for films including costumes and special effects. If I would do something again it would probably have Scarecrow and be more like a horror movie special effects deal or and Arkham Asylum deal. Either way we'd have more money and possibly a better crew, so we'll see.
