Actors that were the orginal choices for Marvel's team of heroes.

The Avengers a great movie for a lot of things. The story, the script, the action, ect. But, for most, the cast was the centerpeice of the film itself. Believe it or not, the actors for Ironman, Loki, Bruce Banner, Thor, Captain America and Black Widow were not the original choices. In this, I'll show the actors that were considered before Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hiddelston, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, and Scarlett Johansson. I'll also give my own thoughts on if they should've been chosen.

Ironman

Actors shown: Nicolas Cage, Leonardo Dicaprio, Clive Owen, and Sam Rockwell
Should have any of them gotten the role? No. RDJ is the PERFECT Tony Stark. Plus, by this time Nicolas Cage was Ghostrider. Rockwell did get the role of Justin Hammer in Ironman 2. They're all good actors, but RDJ was made for this role. I do apologize for not having Tom Cruise in this pic.

Captain America

Actors shown: John Krasinski, Jensen Ackles, Garrett Hedlund, Chace Crawford, and Michael Cassidy
Should have any of them gotten the role? Well, I'm a bit half and half on this one. Jensen Ackles would've been a good choice. More so then the other three. Chris Evans, even though he played a jokester in the Fantastic Four films, but he played a very serious role in Captain America. People had their doubts, but look at them now. He's perfect in the role.

Hulk

Actors shown: Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, Nathan Fillion, and David Tennet
Should have any of them gotten the role? While I did like Ruffalo,Brody would've been a great choice. He can play a shy sicentist, watch Splice. Fillion, of course was rumored for the role of Ant Man.He went on to say he wasen't interested in the role. Ruffalo, however, made the perfect Banner.

Thor

Actors shown: Alexander Skargard, Channing Tatum, Liam Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, Triple H and Brad Pitt
Should have any of them gotten the role? Not really. I like these choices, but none of them could've pulled off the Thor character the way Chris Hemsworth did. Tom Hiddleston, of course, got the role of Loki. Pitt was a maybe for some people, probably because of his role in Troy.

Black Widow

Actress shown: Emily Blunt
Should she have gotten the role? Like Captain America, I'm a bit half in half on this one. But, unlike most, I was impressed with Scarlett's Black Widow in Ironman 2 and was even more impressed in The Avengers. Blunt actually shared her thoughts on The Avengers and the role. She wasn't a bad choice, but I feel as though Johansson was the better option. Just my opinion.

Loki

Actor shown: Josh Hartnett
Should he have gotten the role? No. He is a good actor, but he couldn't pull off Loki the way Hiddelston did. He was the perfect choice for Loki.
Hartnett also got turned down the role of Superman in Batman vs. Superman, which was cancelled. Some do think he'd be a good choice for Starlord.

Well, now it's your turn: Did Marvel make the right move with some of these actors, or was it a big miss?

Good decisions, all of em. I would have personally picked Olga Kurylenko to play Natasha, but that's a type-cast if I ever heard one.

By the way, what's wrong with Tom Cruise?

@Tainted87: he wouldn't have been able to do The Avengers. he'd consider the death of the Chitauri sacreligious.

Don't give me that South Park bandwagon bull, Tom Cruise has been in some awesome movies and has proven he's a terrific actor. Who cares what he believes in?
That's like suggesting actors and actresses are cool with being unfaithful to their spouse because they have simulated sex with another actor on-screen in a movie.

I don't share Clint Eastwood's political views, but I still admire the man for everything he's brought to the cinema.

I live right next to the Scientology capital of Florida, so none of that is news to me. I was raised Catholic though, so I'm not going to condemn a man's acting career based off of his choice to become a posterboy. Not because of some holier-than-thou mentality, but because the Catholic church has had it's share of [frick]-ups, nut-jobs, abuse, murder, prejudice, murder, blah blah blah..... and as an ORGANIZATION, is no better than Scientology.

But I grew up watching Tom Cruise movies - you could call me a fan if you wish. He's like Arnold - you can call him an asshole, a chauvinist pig... you name it, but he's one hell of an entertainer.

I think most of them were the right choices... but still I think Emily Blunt would have been the best Black Widow ever!!!!!

Wow, the ignorance is pretty high in the comments here.

Tom Cruise is a good man. Nobody ever mentions the story of him pulling over when he saw a woman get into a car accident with nobody helping her. He called the ambulance, and stayed with her, until she got taken care of.

Him being some big "evil" dude, is just ridiculous mythology that people in the media and here on the internet made up after he began associating himself with scientologists.

If anything, he is stupid for believing in that scientology drivel. And yeah, I do admit, the whole scientology approval thing he does with every woman is creepy, in addition to other religious shite.

So no, he isn't some big supervillain. Nor is he any kind of saint.

He is a good man, who suffers from stupidity and religious obsession. He is a mixed bag like anybody else.

@BattlinMurdock

I remember hearing Will Smith wanted the role to play Isaiah Bradley, imagine if we ended up getting that, maybe Jayden Smith would've been Bucky LoL

I think it was close that John Krasinski was gonna play Cap, then out of nowhere they announced Evans got the role...IMO i think we dodged a huge bullet there :D

@cipher

I also remember when certain people wanted either John Cena or the Rock to be Captain America

They wanted Will Smith for Superman, not Captain America.

And almost anybody would be better than Scarlett Johansson's atrocious version of Black Widow. The only saving grace for that character is Joss Whedon's writing.

Triple H can't act for shit, he would've been bad, REALLY bad.

@lokibane2012 Will Smith was a bit of a favourite for Captain America for a fair few years. Empire was running a feature on how he'd be perfect for the role (if they could overlook him being black) just about every other issue

I think RDJ was theperfect Stark, because he brought the role to life and projected himself onto the character in a way that fit. I could see Tom Cruise as stark. Hewould be a very different Stark, but I think he would have done good. And he does look the part.

Yes, yes, I know about scientology and it's beliefs. Which is why I did admit that Cruise is a [frick]ing idiot and a zealot for being a part of it.

I disagree. The confidence with which Hemsworth carried himself in a positively silly role, in addition to his charisma is a big part of why Thor worked. If the actor playing Thor ever felt like he was embarassed to be there, or lacked charisma, the whole films would've collapsed around him.

Also, I think it's just a bad idea in general to cast someone very well known like Cruise or Pitt in a superhero role. The audience stops thinking it's Iron Man or Thor, it just becomes "Tom Cruise as a superhero" or "Brad Pitt as a superhero". And as we can see with Green Lantern ("Ryan Reynolds as a superhero"), that really doesn't help the film at all.

Hemsworth was perfect.

thor`s casting was like a lifetime drama his brother wanted the role then the other guy that wantedthe role ended up playing the villan then ultimatly the main character does it :)

Brad Pitt as Thor [frick] no, the dudes an amazing actor I mean seriously but when you cast big name like him well for me any ways I wouldn't be able to get past the fact that this was Brad Pitt with cape and not Thor. Having some one like Hemsworth as Thor means theres none of that baggage of being a star. The DUDE is THOR, I mean look at the guys he looks like [frick]ing god. Marvel have a damn fine track record of casting there lead roles.

Yes I will admit Johansson looked like a mis-cast in IM2 but that was simply because of the writing, give her the right type of writing and damn she nailed the role.

Well what is there left to say about RDJ, I remember the whole of the internet having melt down when they heard that RDJ was going to play Tony Stark. People were against this casting, maybe not to the degree that they were against Ledger. Man it is one of the finest casting I have ever seen. The DUDE is Tony Stark/Iron Man

I do hope when ever that a new actor takes over we don't get this new trend thats going around of disregarding previous actors portrayals of the same character, e.g. Chris Reeves, hopefully that doesn't happen to RDJ portrayal.

Triple H was going to play Thor? What was Marvel smoking at the time?
