FAN CAST: Superman: The Man Of Steel by JoshW

Here are my choices for who should play the main characters in Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman reboot which I have based loosely on the "Birthright" storyline...

Just a quick cast I've put together featuring my latest picks for who I think should star in The Man of Steel. I've been pretty busy lately so havent had has much time as normal to include things like bios (if you need one of those for any of the following characters why are you even on CBM, lol!?) but have given some explanations as to why I've chosen each of them. Thanks for reading in advance and please let me know what you think in the usual place! :)

Since his debut in 1938 Superman has become one of the most recognisable fictional characters in existence. Now, prepare for a fresh take on Superman, courtesy of two of comics' brightest talents... Imagine Superman comics were beginning again and you could read the first adventures of the Man of Steel - but reinvented from top to bottom to reflect today's world and today's sensibilities. That's Birthright: the story of Superman - from Krypton to Metropolis (via Smallville!) and beyond. Master scribe Mark Waid demonstrates his love for, and knowledge of, the Superman mythos whilst the graceful illustrations of Leinil Francis Yu bring the story to life.

Tom Welling OR Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman

As I'm sure most of you know, I'm split 50/50 (well, maybe 60/40 in Routh's favour) when it comes to either of these actors reprising the role of Superman in his next big screen outing. That is why I've taken the cowards way out by picking them both in this cast as I'd be equally pleased to see either of them in the role.

Jennifer Carpenter as Lois Lane

I've seen a lot of great suggestions made for the role of Lois Lane (and have made a few of my own over the years) but I believe that the star of Dexter is the best possible choice. As you cam see from the above image, she looks 100% perfect for the role and I believe shed have no trouble pulling off the feisty toughness we all know 'the character for.

Paul Bettany as Lex Luthor

Known to many as the voice of Jarvis in the Iron Man movies, I'd love to see Bettany get to play the villain in this movie. I think he'd easily pull off the slimy and hateful Lex, while also having no trouble with the less villainous (and more charming) side if the character.

Ryan O’Neal and Sela Ward as Jonathan and Martha Kent

I decided to go with two slightly younger actors for Ma and Pa Kent as they were portrayed in "Birthright". They both have what I consider to be the right look and acting styles to really do justice to Clark's parents on the big screen and portray them as far more interesting than any if the past Superman movies.

Tim Robbins as Perry White

An odd choice perhaps, but I think he'd give a really interesting take on a character who has been portrayed quite similarly over the years. When it was rumoured that Robbins was in the running for a role in Iron Man 2, I was very excited, but this is another CBM he'd be just as well suited for in my opinion.

Bret Harrison as Jimmy Olsen

First I wanted to see him as Bucky and then Spider-Man. When neither of those ended up happening, I decided that I had to find another role for the talented Reaper actor another role, and I can't think of another he's better suited to than Jimmy Olsen.

Logan Lerman as Young Clark Kent

The kid is a decent actor (and previously my top pick for who should play Peter Parker in the reboot) and I think he'd do a good job of portraying the young Clark in a few brief scenes adapted from the "Birthright" storyline.

Devon Graye as Young Lex Luthor

Yes, another Dexter actor, but this young actor is VERY good at playing someone with issues as that show proved. He'd style is very different to that of Lerman's and I can see the two having great chemistry, while he'd easily be able to pull off Lex's decent into madness.

So that's a wrap! Please feel free to let me know what you think in the usual place and as always, thanks for reading! :)

How did I KNOW you was going to do this lol! ; D

GR8 stuff dude, apart from WELLINGTONBOOT I like, kudos!

:)

Yeah I've seen Carpenter too, as Lois, she'd be gr8, love her in Dexter!

I like the cast, but I doubt we're gonna see Welling or Routh in the reboot. I'm pulling for either McPartlin or Karl Urban.

I like the Lois pick I think I was the first person to suggest her and I like that its catching on. I like the rest dude very cool.

P.S. You SHOULD read 'MAN OF STEEL' by John Byrne!

Another great read, love Birthright too tho, not loving that new Twilight look origin thats out now though lol.

Nice cast. I was messing around thinking about doing a Fancast for Superman the other night and had Lerman as a young Clark Kent as well. Although Welling is my Superman. But I think Routh deserves a shot as well.

Also, that panel of Lois and Jennifer Carpenter is eerily spot-on. Almost like she was photo-traced by the artist. lol

@batmanknight i doubt we'll see karl urban as superman since he's going to be busy with judge dredd but he would be fricking amazing

@JoshW pretty sweet casting dude jenifer carpenter looks exactly like lois in that pic, and i dont really have a problem with any of the actors people are suggesting long as it is'nt jon hamm or any of the twilight actors i shall be happy LOL

Mostly really good I think, though not gone on your Martha Kent. Julianne Moore is my fave for that.

That first panel of Lois from Earth One, I could not get over how much she looked jennifer Carpenter! I see others spotted that too, lol!

Cool cast Josh! While I can find flaws with both Welling and Routh as Superman, I have not seen anyone yet that I would want to replace them. To me, they are the best thing going by default. =D

LEE: Thanks bud! :) Yeah, I knew I had to put this cast together as soon as I read "Birthright"! (plus, I had to make up for that abomination of a Superman cast I did featuring Sam Worthington as Clark Kent!) Been trying to pick up "Man of Steel" but it's pretty hard to find to be honest.

BatmanKnight: Thanks man, great minds think alike I guess! (thought I was the first person to suggest her though, dammit!) I always wanted McPartlin for Captain America, but Superman could definitely work.

SuperHDA/Ibz/invalensname: Cheers guys! It's crazy how much they look alike in that picture, lol! I actually had another image I was going to use for this cast, then came across that on Google and knew it was the best one to prove my point with. The artist (think it's from that new "Earth One" series) must have based it on Carpenter though.

MrDCUniverse: I hate to say that I only like your Lois Lane pick, lol! :P I could definitely see O'Neal as Perry White though...very nearly cast him in that role actually!

YourMomNaked: Nicely said, and awesome avatar!

HAWKS: Thanks mate, that is funnily enough EXACTLY how I feel about them both! Although I can find plenty of reasons why neither of them should play Superman, I can find just as many as to why they should. Plus, I've not seen anyone suggested who would be better!

Well, I guess you came back. About time, we need more of your casting genius.

I don't know about Tom Welling or Brandon Routh. If they bring the "Smallville" universe onto the big screen, then yes to Tom. For Brandon, they're clearly restarting the franchise, so I don't see him returning.

Good choice for Lois Lane. Jennifer looks a bit like Erica Durance. Hot too.

Paul Bettany, though an overused choice next to Ralph Fiennes, would work, since I've realized he can do an American accent in "Priest". So, thumbs up.

I don't know about Ryan O'Neal. He recently fell from grace not too far back over something I don't give a shit to find out about. He's a good actor, don't get me wrong, but are people clinging to see him back on the screen?

I doubt Tim Robbins will play another DC character since he's playing Senator Hammond in "Green Lantern". I think Richard Dean Anderson - my choice for J. Jonah Jameson for the new "Spider-Man" reboot - would work in Zach Snyder's favor. Or maybe James Remar or Thomas Hayden Church.

As for the young Clark and Lex, doubt they're gonna go over his origin story again. We all get what happened, so no point in trying to recap the childhood of the two main characters.

Don't leave us hanging for another fancast. Do you have any plans on which you'll do next? I'd love to see something like "Annihilation", "Guardians of the Galaxy", or even an anime/manga franchise like "Sailor Moon".

Josh@, absolutely perfect!

I, myself, would love Routh or Welling as Supes!

Jennifer Carpenter, nice choice!

I can actually picture in my mind Tim Robbins
doing the part of Perry! It works for me!

To me, Paul Bettany is the ideal LEX LUTHOR,
you and I aren't the only ones who feel that
way either! Paul has been cast as Lex all over
the net!

NERO - 11/1/2010, 7:50 PM
Nice casting, but I still think there is no chance in hell that Routh or Tom will be Superman.

I like Carpenter as Lois, first time I've heard that or Robbins for Perry.

The rest of the casting is really good.

I still think Ma and Pa should really have the more country farmer vibe. My own picks are still Sam Elliott or Scott Glenn for Pa and Sissy Spacek for Ma.

Cool cast but I fricking hate Jennifer Carpenter as an actress because of how much she annoyed me in Exorcism of Emily Rose as well as in Quarantine. I get the feeling that if she played Lois in a "damsel in distress" type situation I wouldn't want her to be rescued.lol

I'd prefer Dominic Pace for Luthor though:

It's an ok cast.

NO to ROUTH. Had his shot, time to move on. Same with Welling but he aint as bad as routh.

Jon Hamm- Superman
Billy Zane- Lex Luthor
Mary Louise Parker- Lois Lane
Hugo Weaving- Brainiac

This cast is because supposedly they are aiming for a middle-aged cast. Which [frick] I am happy they are finally doing. I have had it with all the 20 somethin year old prepubescent BOYS who can't even [frick]en ACT. Routh had his shot at fame as Supes...Welling HAS HAD his shot for 10 years. Let's move on with a NEW actor just like when they rebooted Batman with a solid, new actor. A middle-aged Superman would be better than most of you think. At least he won't be afraid to actually FIGHT or to throw a [frick]en punch. I want the film to have a middle-aged Supes with a chip on his shoulder ie- ANGSTY. At this point that is the right direction. Superman Returns was a gay film. Really it was. Supes did NOTHING...he just lifted shit and stalked lois. This new film needs to have Superman actually fighting someone, maybe throw an actual punch for the first time ever. Ans sorry but any "Superman fan" who loved SR is a tool and isn't really a true fan of Supes. No real fans could possibly have loved that abomination of Superman on the big screen...that most epic of turds that Bryan Singer had SHAT on the big screen. Singer basically took a big dump and called it Superman Returns.
sweetre15
sweetre15 - 11/2/2010, 7:33 PM
@LP4: For a mid-aged Supes Michael Trucco would be betther than Jon Hamm.

I also hope Dominic Pace atleast gets to audition for Luthor(look him up)
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 11/2/2010, 8:45 PM
LP4@ I completely agree with your first line. The last word we have had from Snyder though is that they are looking at the early days of Superman, so a middle-aged Superman would not work that well. Hamm, though he is 39, looks like he is in his mid-40's and that doesn't cut it with me. A Superman not afraid to throw a punch has nothing to do with the actor. That is all on the writer and direction. ;-)

Dude Josh this would make for a seriously awesome movie.
I would have to say I also favor Routh, He is just a better actor IMO.
He wasn't great in SR but he has improved a lot.
His scene in Scott Pilgrim was my favorite in the movie.

Awesome fan-cast! I agree with you on Jennifer, she'd be perfect and is one of my top choices for the role next to Emily Blunt. Bret would make a good Jimmy; my picks are either Jesse Eisenberg or Michael Cera. Not sure about who I'd want for Supes though, I was split on both Routh/Welling like you but I think it would be best if they went with someone new. So far my only choices are either Josh Hartnett or Jared Padalecki (only because he has a good look for the character and would bring an "All-American" sort of look to him.) All around great choices! :)
