First off, this is what all of us think of Frank Miller's adaptation of
The Spirit:
It had almost nothing to do with the original comic. The box office and critics prove that it sucks. And now I hate Frank Miller. It started with the bullcrap he gave us that was
The Dark Knight Strikes Again,
All Star Batman and Robin, and
Holy Terror. But the last straw was his comments about Occupy Wall Street. This is now what I think of him:
Anyway, enough ranting. I always consider
The Spirit the
Princess Bride od comics since it covers a wide variety of genres (like said book). I think its best if the film adaptation is a mix of a noir movie and a pulp novel, with a bit of action and comedy added in. Unlike my previous casts, I have no choice for a director because anyone (with the exception of Michael Bay, Uwe Boll, and Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer) could do a better job than Miller.
Anyway, here's a little story outline that I did for my cast. The story takes place between the late 40's and the early 50's:
Denny Colt was once a Central City detective dedicated to justice, until he was shot and left for dead by a mysterious criminal known as The Octopus. However, Denny was merely put into a coma, and awoken weeks later in Wilwood Cemetery. After gaining the blessing of Police Commissioner Dolan, Dent became the masked crimefighter known as The Spirit. Aided by his young friend Ebony White, The Spirit sought to rid Central City of the Octopus's villainy, all while encountering coloful criminals and female fatales.
And now, your featured cast:
Heroes:
Matthew Fox as Denny Colt/The Spirit: A former police officer whom everybody thought to be dead, but actually survived ad became the crimefighter, The Spirit.Given permission to fight crime by Police Commisoner Dolan, he operates out of a base hidden beneath Denny Colt's grave. The Spirit is a skilled athlete and hand-to-hand combatant and has some detective skills.
Reason for Casting: Fox has been a popular pick for either Barry Allen or Cyclops. However, I see him as The Spirit. If you've seen his work on
Lost or
Party of Five, you know that he just oozes talent. He just needs to work out a bit since the Spirit is somewhat muscular.
Tyler James Williams as Ebony White: A street smart kid who moonlights as a cab driver (in a cab that is obviously not his. He is good friends with the Spirit and helps him with his fight against crime.
Reason for Casting: Casting Ebony White was pretty tough, and there was no way in hell that I would cast Jaden Smith. I decided to change Ebony's age to around 15 years old. Anyway, I chose Williams mainly because of his work on
Everybody Hates Chris. Plus he looks young enough to pass as a teenager.
Ted Levine as Commissioner Dolan: The Police Commissioner of Central City and Denny Colt's former boss. He gives the Spirit is blessing to fight crime and is good friends with him.
Reason for Casting: Levine already has connections to the CBM community, having voiced Sinestro on
Justice League and
Justice League Unlimited. The man is good at both comedy and drama and is almost a spitting image of Dolan (minus the white hair).
Gillian Jacobs as Ellen Dolan: The daughter of Commissoner Dolan and one of the Spirit's many love interests, who is determined to win his heart.
Reason for Casting: I got the idea of casting Gillan when RoadDogXVII kept parading around the idea of Jacobs as Gwen Stacy. Gillian's played very sweet characters before, I decided she'd be a good pick for Ellen.
Villains:
Michael Shannon as The Octopus: A mysterious criminal genus and master of disguise, who is responsible for the death of Denny Colt. He never shows his face, and is identified by a pair of unique gloves.
Reason for Casting: Shannon is a brilliant actor. He stole the show in
The Runaways and gave a great performance in
Take Shelter. He can play villains with ease and go from calm to berserk in a blink of an eye. IMO, he's a perfect fit for the Octopus.
Marion Cotillard as P'Gell: A female fatale who tries to lure the Spirit to her life of crime. Her mondus operandi is to seduce wealthy men, marry them, and then have them die in mysterious ways, leaving the money for herself, which she uses to fund her criminal empire.
Reason for Casting: I've based this casting choice off of Cotillard's performance in
Inception. She played a great villainess there and I'd think she'd do wonders in this role.
Hayley Atwell as Silken Floss: The Octopus's accomplice, who serves as a surgeon.
Reason for Casting: This is probably a hit or miss casting. Atwell isn't that bad of an actress and was the first person to pop into my head.
Carla Gugino as Silk Saref: A childhood friend of Denny Colt, who knows of his identity of The Spirit. Saref works in espionage, and usually ends up on the opposite side of the law.
Reason for Casting: Gugino's a great actress. She's played somewhat similar roles to this, and was a last minute casting (I literally thought of using her last night).
Jared Harris as Dr. Kobra: A mad scientist who uses his genius to supply The Octopus with drugs, which keeps his criminal empire afloat.
Reason for Casting: Harris played a damn good villain during the first season of
Fringe, and was pretty good as Professor Moriarty in
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. He also has this somewhat creepy presence that I want Kobra to have.
Sam Rockwell as Mister Carrion: A morbid con man and one of the Octopus's underlings.
Reason for Casting: I've recently gotten the chance to re watch
Matchstick Men. Rockwell played a con man who is a bit sleazy. This may sound like typecasting, but it wouldn't hurt if Sam played another sleazy con man, right?
