RECAP: Since continuing his antics as Spider-Man, Alan spends more time with Jess, as well as finding himself in a way. Soon he discovers he is a wanted man by the police, as they believe him to be a possible threat to the city. After seeing that things are getting outlandish, Steven informs Dr. Anderson that he is destroying the formula and creating an antidote for Alan. Dr. Anderson, in response, fires Steven and has his wife killed by his group of thugs.
PART 3: Alan confronts his father immediately, starting off by asking how long he knew about his powers. Steven confesses that he has known for some time, and even goes as far as to tell Alan to stop playing hero, because he could get hurt. The conversation ends with Alan feeling as if it's his fault his mom is dead because, if he hadn't been out with Jess, none of this would have happened. But, the entire thing is in full Steven's fault because of his refusal to continue his work at Biotech.
Alan immediately suits up and goes to blow off steam by going for a swing. He confronts a group of thugs as they attempt to rob a street vendor. A crowd watches in horror as Spider-Man, who they thought was their hero, beats these men near to death. Alan realizes that what he is doing is wrong before it goes to far, and he is attacked by the thugs and gets pretty roughed up. He manages to incapacitate the thugs and swing home without getting killed. At school a couple of days later, TJ and Alan both start to realize that the Spider-Man alter ego is harder to deal with than they thought it would be, and Jess is shocked when she sees all of Alan's partially healed bruises and scratches from the fighting. He simply explains it as injuries he got when he received from a mugging. Both TJ and Jess feel incredibly sorry for Alan when they learn of his mother's death.
Meanwhile, Dr. Anderson is very desperately trying to recreate Steven's formula, and has the team of scientists he worked with on the serum try to recreate it along with him. He discusses with the head of the project, Dr. Rattner, that he wishes to capture Spider-Man, because he believes he would be a great asset to the research. Rattner accepts, because he is offered a very generous bonus if he can pull it off.
Meanwhile, Alan and Jess are nearly inseparable as she concoles him about his mother's death. Alan feels very grateful that he has people like Jess in his life, as well as TJ. While talking with TJ, he contemplates that maybe he should give up the mantle of Spider-Man so that he can live a normal life without having things like this happen. Then, TJ reminds him that his mother thought that what Spider-Man was doing for the city was a great thing, which makes Alan now feel like he HAS to be Spider-Man in order for his mother to forgive him for letting her down.
Steven tries to convince Alan to quit his job as a lab assistant at Biotech without telling him about Dr. Anderson and his secret agenda, but Alan says that he likes working there and he refuses to quit. Dr. Anderson keeps a close eye on Alan in the meantime, wanting him to be vulnerable when the time comes for him to be captured.
Meanwhile, in secret, Dr Rattner and a team of scientists create their own version of the serum, and we find out that they have been testing it on humans in the meantime. Almost all of the mutations they have been able to create have either been unsuccessful or have died... except for one of them. They have created what they think will be the ultimate asset in helping them capture Spider-Man: ANOTHER arachno-human mutation, which they nicknamed "Ratt" after it's creator, Dr. Rattner. Heck, they even used his DNA to create the thing.
(I pictured the creature to look something like this.)
