Which Marvel Hero is In Most Desperate Need of a Character Reboot?

Which Marvel Hero is In Most Desperate Need of a Character Reboot? Which Marvel Hero is In Most Desperate Need of a Character Reboot?

Some characters have been lost in the scuffle of "event comics" and have thus gone through developments and never recovered. I pose the question: Which Marvel hero deserves a return to form, a-la Mark Waid's Daredevil?

I'll shamelessly say it; Mark Waid's re-interpretation of Daredevil was one of the best moves Marvel's (fairly) recently made. Bringing back Murdock to his charming, swashbuckling, quick-wit roots was a welcome return from his dark, depressive (though still exceptional) days under Bendis, Brubaker, and (I suppose) Diggle's pen. So, are there any Marvel characters you want to see a return to form to? A "rebooted" personality, if you will? Below, I've given a few examples of some characters very desperately needing to come back with style.

Cyclops

Let's not mince words, here. Scott Summers is a real hero, who, as of years of late, has become somewhat of a complete douchebag for the sake of his ideology. I give props to the character for being one of the few to stick to his guns about where he stands, but Cyclops used to be fairly iconic. He's now thrown into "leadership" positions to pose the bad guy. Cyclops has been through an awful lot in his career, but he was trusted as Xavier's right hand man for a reason: good moral judgement, values, and an ability to fight the good fight. It would be great to see Scott revert back to the man that was, instead of constantly trying to beat back lost causes with his bare fists.

The Hulk

Until The Avengers, I was never a fan of the Hulk. I'd seen both movies, previously, and didn't give too much thought to the character himself. What I liked about what Whedon did with him, that the comics seem to be lacking, is that he made the character fun. And while I know Banner has never been the happy-go-lucky character with a chip on his shoulder, his brooding and basic...uninterestingness calls for a change! Let Banner be brilliant and let his adventures utilize the Hulk; he isn't getting rid of the demon anytime soon.

Magneto

I'll be the first to preach recent ignorance on this one; I've not been keeping a close eye on Magneto. Last I heard, he was a good guy? That, in and of itself, threw me. I'm all for radical character development, but I'm not sure how I see complete change in arguably the greatest comic villain of all time. I'd like to see Magneto get back to the basics, find his evil again, and wreak the havoc of a thousand worlds back on the X-Men. A strong, motivated, and developed villain, maybe I'm just not ready to let him grow up.

Nick Fury

He had quite the leave of absence for a while, and I want him back with a, pardon the pun, Fury. Nick Fury was a prize-fighting, military champ who got his hands good and dirty without ever needing to. When he's been around, he's been the behind-the-scenes fellow, barking orders instead of kicking ass. Give me back field operative Nick Fury!

Floor's open, boys and girls. Who deserves a personality reboot? Do any? Play nice.

Sadly to say, I would have to pick Cyclops. Id like to see him go back to the honorable leader of the X-Men as he was before turning into the jerk of the team and give him back the personality and qualities that Prof X saw in him and what earned him that leadership.

What is the love affair with Cyclops? He is nothing without Jean Grey or his offspring. He's a very boring character with an uninteresting power.

Magneto: Mags is only with the X-Men because the mutant race is on its last legs. If his vision of Mutant domination is to come true, then he needs more than 198 mutants on planet earth to achieve that goal. He knows that allying with Cyclops and the X-Men of Utopia is his best bet because Chke is willing to do ANYTHING to get the mutant race back on track. As soon as AvX is over, and the mutant populace is restored to normalcy, I dont see Magneto sticking around for too long before he goes back to his old ways. Basically, the X-Men are a means to an end for him.

Cyclops: I love what has been done with Cyclops. We're talking about one of the most tormented characters in Marvel comics.

He watched the love of his life die, then return to him, only to die in front of him AGAIN.

He had his mind and body taken over by Apocalypse, which was really the beginning of his downward spiral.

His pregnant mother was murdered when D'ken ripped his unborn brother from her womb.

His father was abducted by the Shi'ar, leaving him an orphan.

He was experimented on by Sinister in said orphanage for no one knows how long.

Xavier, his father figure, lied to him and hid the fact that he had a 2nd brother for years.

The entire survival of the mutant race was placed on his shoulders after M-day. The stress of that would get to anyone.

Cyclops has always been a very flawed, multi-layered, and interesting character. Just about every writer that has worked on X-Men will say that Cyclops was their favorite character to write. He's a brilliant strategist and without him the X-Men would have died a million times over. Where Captain America will always find a way to win, Cyclops has analyzed every possibility of any given situation in order to make the best tactical decision. You can almost say his leadership skills on the battlefield are a 2nd mutation. Also, he's got one of the most devestating powers of all. Its the only force on earth that has been known to pulverize adamantium.

Cyclops is my favorite superhero in all of comics. Having said ALL of this, even I would like to see him go back to his roots. I dont want him to lose the hardcore, edginess that he has gained over the years, and i certainly dont want him to stop making the tough decisions, but it would be nice to see him listen to his team a little more instead of being the "my way or the highway" dictator that he has become.

He's still a fantastic character, and this is all just a phase. I wouldnt say he needs a reboot, maybe just a little tweaking.

great article and I agree on most everything.

I wish Hulk would get a reboot. I dont understand what comics and movies have done to him. a lot of lost potential there with Big Green

Hulk. And hopefully, that is what we will be getting with The Indestructable Hulk series from Marvel NOW! I want to like the character but he has to be fun, if they can channel waht mark Ruffalo did for the character, I am sold.

Right, because your eyes being a portal to another dimension that releases an extremely destructive force beam when opened is totally boring...

Corndog,

That makes him more interesting. If you go with the original premise, he is still a bore.
