Why Michael Korvac Should Be The Villain of Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy has been confirmed as the second Marvel movie of 2014. Many fans have speculated that a villain known as the Magus will be the villain. I have a different theory.

Before Guardians of the Galaxy was confirmed, just about every fan cast listed the Magus, an evil, alternate personality within the hero Adam Warlock, although his future self, as the villain. While this would be an interesting concept, I disagree. Why would you have a team fighting one of their members, in the future, for an entire film? And have that character just be Thor, minus the hammer? To top it all off, the Soul Gem, one of the Infinity Gems, is a major part of Warlock's character, but it has been used by Loki, and is in the custody of SHEILD. It wouldn't be good to utilize Warlock's future self, as the villain, at least in the first. What about Michael Korvac? While not the most well known villain, I believe he would be a very powerful, very dangerous villain. I have three reasons as to why Korvac would be a better villain than the Magus.

Reason #1: Michael Korvac is god-like.

Adam Warlock has enhanced strength, agility, reflexes, speed, durability, and stamina. He also has flight and can fire cosmic energy from his hands. So, he is Thor, plus cosmic energy blasts in place of Mjolnir. Michael Korvac is half computer, able to analyze anyone's powers and weaknesses in an instant. He can also time travel, and absorb energy. Korvac was able to absorb the energy of Galactus, gaining the Power Cosmic in the process. He was then able to alter matter, project energy, teleportation, and can manipulate time and space. On the Marvel Comics Database, he has 7 out of 7 intelligence, strength, speed, durability, and energy projection. He only has 2 for fighting skills. Warlock has 3 of 7 intelligence, 5 for strength, regularly 3 for speed, 6 for durability, 6 for energy projection, and 2 for fighting skills. Not to mention, that at one time, Korvac was able to alter reality. I'll get back to that.

Reason #2: We can get to know Adam Warlock.

Why would you introduce Adam Warlock in the first, say, 20 minutes of the film, only to make him a villain? If I were Kevin Feige, I would like to introduce Adam, and keep I'm as a hero, fleshing him out, showcasing his origin, personality, maybe hints towards the Magus, but never fully showing him. That could make it more emotional if we are ever introduced to Magus, or if Thanos captures Warlock, or kills him, as he did in the comics. If we're introduced to Adam Warlock, it could be a very interesting and emotional dynamic if he is captured or killed? If we're just introduced to the Magus, it could be cool to see how Warlock reacts, but the moviegoers should see how good a guy Warlock is first.

Reason #3: Korvac is a gateway to Thanos.

As I said in Reason #1, Michael Korvac once had the power to change reality. Now, what if, in the MCU, he gained this power through the reality stone, one of the Infinity Stones? Hmm? This could be a second gateway to Thanos, along with a full-blown appearance and introduction? It would be the best way to introduce Thanos in the MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy wouldn't be the fist cosmic Marvel movie, but certainly be the most. To introduce Thanos here would be the best move on Marvel's part.

So, those are some reasons on why I believe that Michael Korvac would be a better villain in Guardians of the Galaxy than The Magus. Hope you liked my thoughts! Post yours in the comments!

Until next time,

I agree that Magus shouldn't be villain first go round. I'd love Warlock to be a character, but As Warlock, and see him have hints of becoming Magus, but not until the end of the movie to set him up as a villain for the sequel or something. I do think Thanos will have some part in this film, whether as the big baddie or the man behind the curtain as he was in Avengers. I'd like to see the Universal Church of Truth involved in some way too, perhaps as another setup of the potential nature Warlock has to become Magus. The turn of Warlock in Issue 18 and 19 of GotG needs to be in a film. Would you want to see the Korvac similar to on Avengers:EMH, or the weird half robot one from the old comics?

@comiccow When did Loki have the Soul Gem?

Well, I'm assuming, but it's heavily implied that Loki's spear has the Soul Gem. When placed on a person, it took control over them, plus Thanos gave it to him, and the Soul Gem is blue.

Oh, and I would like to see a mixture of the two, make him internally half-robot, and the exterior unchanged.

@comiccow The Soul Gem is green. The Mind Gem is blue.

Well, that's my mistake. So, Loki had the Mind Gem. Got it.

I agree. Although personally, I would prefer when Magus does show up, to have Warlock not actually change into Magus but have him split himself into two separate entities. I always liked Warlock, and I thin he needs to be a hero, not a once hero now villain. Yes it would be emotional but it would be even more emotional for him to over come his evil side.

The confirmed movie line-up at this point is: StarLord, Drax, Gamorra, Rocket Raccoon and Groot. They may choose to add Warlock or Nova, but I wouldn't count on it.

i would go with Korvac or the badoon although there is some history with the universal church of truth with adam warlock, the original guardians (in the 90s series), and the 2008 series

my favorite version is actually the one in the 90s series where this young boy had the power to gain anyone's powers so he would become infinitely powerful (even more so than Korvac). I can't remember how he was defeated...might have to read that storyline again.

M. Korvac has also been on Avengers EMH so all they have to do is make him a returning villain on the show and bring back GOTG on the show to introduce him to some of the younger and older mainstream audience
