MrSotoMan Pitches: The Fantastic Four

MrSotoMan Pitches: The Fantastic Four

Starting off a fresh new segment for CBM readers called MrSotoMan Pitches, our first pitch for the week will be none other than Fantastic Four. With fans having such a horrible reception to the new movie before release, I thought it would be great to add what I would do with the franchise. Take a look with me!

Hello fellow CBM readers, so since my summary already pointed out the obvious of what this article pertains too, I wanna dive right into the meat and bones of this article. With Fantastic Four on the horizon and since I've already seen it; it's not that hard to imagine that there is something I would of done drastically different with the movie as a whole. It doesn't make it a bad movie in my opinion, but I have had this vision for an origin movie for the longest and I felt the need to share it with you. Is it 616 based, Ultimate based, entirely new? Lets go ahead and find out.

PLOT SYNOPSIS:
1ST ACT

To begin with, I wanted to start strictly with an origin story that would seem modern but yet keep with the spirit of the comics of the idea of working together and being a family. The central THEME
In this movie will be consistent with our main character REED RICHARDS the leader and genius who has the pressure of saving the world not only once but twice from total devastation and terrorism.

Our movie begins at the World Science Festival where Reed Richards and science partner Victor Von Doom try to unveil a new machine that will break the boundaries of science and the leap to the supernatural. Before the unveiling begins, Reed warns Victor that the machine may be catastrophic and could do harm to him. Victor feeling jealous has a agenda fulfill to where he begins to take personal of the subject matter to which the both split their moments before the unveiling.

To Reeds dismay, the machine fails and ends up injuring Victors face completely sending him in a coma which leads for Reed to follow up on his own. 18 months later, Reed Richards is the worlds smartest and most brilliant scientist on the face of the Earth, already find the cure for numerous of dieseases and world known philanthropist as well. His wealth is joined by Sue Storm who happens to be his assitant and girlfriend for Reed in the Baxter Building. As Reed prepares design plans for Victors failed machine to travel to other dimensions (*Hint* Negative Zone *Hint*) to which he is called in by the Federal US Government on a mission.

As Reed is breifed, gamma ray bursts from the cosmic rays are heading towards Earth, with which the Federal Government ask Reed Richards to put a shield ready enough to block the blast from entering Earths atmosphere due to the fact that Earth's ozone layer will not be able to protect itself from the blast. The only way to do so is to go into space with their built space rocket. Reed agrees to bring in his own team to do the mission and ensures that Earth will be safe.

As he searches for his team, we meet Ben Grimm. Former college football athlete, NASA pilot and best friend of Reed Richards. Johnny Storm, NASA's youngest astronaut, and extreme sports athlete. Reed agrees to also take Sue Storm for refering to Johnny and to be his protege for the mission. As the cloud grows closer, the world prepares for the incoming end of the world where they launch into space.

As the rocket goes into space, the rocket begins to malfunction with all of them on board, with nothing left to do Reed orders all four to unleash the mechnisim that Reed built into the atmosphere, as the cosmic rays grow closer it crashes through their spaceship losing all contact with NASA. The world cheers but mourns the lost of 4 great men and women who sacrified their lives to save Earth. They are known all over the world as THE FANTASTIC FOUR!

2ND ACT

8 MONTHS LATER: Reed Richards awakes has a full beard and looks completely fine, only to awake to a hospital like room. A CIA agent walks in with two Marine soldiers, his name is JOHN DOE to which he does not reveal his name to Reed. He explains to him that Earth was saved and shows him a newspaper detailing his death and a memorial service for what they have done. Reed in utter shock tries to run out only to find that Johnny & Sue have already awakened and seem fine know of the news. All that is left is Ben which Reed is lead to him showing him in a locked chamber like an animal.

Reed demands Ben to be let out but warned because of his self-aware of his monstrous "side effect". As explained by John Doe, they had crashed back on Earth and realised they were still alive but notice that they had shown their powers while unconscious with Ben being the hardest to capture. They had kept their well-being a secret that only the most powerful world leaders know of their existence and their powers. Reed demands to learn more answers to which John Doe makes them conduct science experiments to test their powers out in obstacle courses built for them around when they were in their coma.

As Reed does their tests, Reed can stretch any part of his body to any length, Sue can exhibit invisible shields, along with being invisible; Johnny can engulf his body into flames as a literal Human Torch and Ben's rock-like physique has gave him super-strength and durability. After their tests, the Reed wants to go back to the Baxter and run more tests to which John Doe does not approve of due to the very fact they are dead. As the four argue about the very mission they accepted, Reed has no choice but to follow along for now until he can think of a plan to escape. Meanwhile at the United Nations, the discussion of the Fantastic Four's whereabouts are mentioned and whether or not they can be capable weapons against terrorist activities or even trusting the U.S. with them. It is at that moment that Doombots disguised as humans rip their faces off and begin killing off leaders before going offline.

The US terrified at the terrorist attack, recieve a message from an unknown hooded figure who demands the release of the Fantastic Four or more leaders will be killed. With no choice, the President orders John Doe to use them for what they were intended for. John Doe returns back to the secret facility where the four are kept, and breif them on the attack at the U.N, meanwhile Reed has developed suits for the four to stablize their powers better. As Doe breifs them, the four decline to help only one condition, that they let them free into the world to which Doe does not accept seeing as they are US government property, that is until he is threatened with Ben Grimm. Reed then tries to convince the four to go to Latveria where the mysterious figure is located and bring him to justice. At first skeptical but realize they have no choice.

As they head to Latveria they are greeted by none other than DR. DOOM, ruler of Latveria, to which Ben points out that the name is familar to both him and Reed. While invited to Dooms castle for dinner, they are introduced to MORGAN LA FEY who is Doom's assitant and lover as well but with a sinister expression to her. As Doom invites them for dinner, he begins to get to know them and acknowledges their heroics. With Reed slowly deducing the identity of Dr. Doom, Doom reassures them that they will not be leaving Latveria with Doombots comitting a surprise attack on them and Ben poisoned by Morgan. They are soon locked up in cells in Dooms castle. When Reed awakes with Sue, they communicate and console with one another, as Johnny does the same with Ben. Later Doom arrives to Reeds cell revealing that he is in fact Victor Von Doom, and that the day of his failure he had escaped and went on his own. For years he waited for the perfect moment to destroy Reed Richards but now was the perfect time. Doom had planned to create the machine that scarred him for life to which Reed promises to escape.

As Doom leaves, Sue figures out a way out by using her powers, to which Reed has already unlocked the cell using his powers as well so she may escape. As she escape, she goes to Doom's room where Doom, Morgan and another short-rounded man; MOLE MAN seem to be discussing plans off a Bio-Organic Weapon they have created that they plan to unleash onto New York to which Mole Man already starts heading his way out to New York with a cargo ship on its way to Latveria. Morgan begins to realize someone is out of their cell by sensing the presence of Sue. Sue then runs off with Morgan being mislead. As Sue returns, she breaks Reed out of his cell along with breaking Ben & Johnny out. Suddenly alarms are set off with Doom promising that there will be no escape out of Latveria. The Fantastic Four then band together to battle the Doom Bots, to which the battle extends outside of the castle.

As Johnny battles through the castle, he sees real people trapped in cages, as opposed to the people already on the streets who are more than likely Doom Bots, to which Johnny frees them through the castle. Reed heads to Doom's lab where he witnesses the same machine that Doom had built at the Festival, only to realize it is not finished. Suddenly on one of the computer screens, it shows a tag named MOLOID. Reed quickly realizes this battle was a distraction and must warn the team they have to try to leave Latveria. Doom surprises Reed to a fight which leads to the courtyard of the castle. The four then gather together witnessing Reed battling Doom. Doom stands ready to battle the four of them where they have an intense battle which leads to Doom having the upper-hand. Ben finally throws Doom off enough for the Four to subdue Doom only to end up destroying a Doombot.

3RD ACT

The four than gather together to find a ship to leave Latveria with Doombots suddenly going offline, they come across a ship at the docks to which they board and they leave to New York. On their way there, Reed apologizes for getting them in this mess, but that he only wanted to help them set their lives free and for the cosmic rays that gave them their powers. They all accept his apology and decide to move on to try to save New York. Reed quickly radios in John Doe when a signal pulls through, alerting John of a BOW entering New York. As Harvey enters Times Square, he drops down the vile down a sewer hatch as millions do not notice. An earthquake then begins to emerge, the screen in Times Square begins to show Dr. Doom asking the US to accept defeat and to handover the country to him. Military of Army & Marine enter Times Square as the MOLOID KING the size of Godzilla breaks free in the middle of Times Square.

As The Fantastic Four arrive in New York, John Doe stops them and tells them they may not enter New York that they will be arrested. Ben detests to that by threatning John, with Reed talking John down that they have to help. John finally agrees to let them go with John giving them earpieces specifically tailored to their powers so they may communicate. Johnny flies to Times Square noticing the Moloid King destroying buildings. The team finally arrive as Ben tries his best to distract the monster as the team tries their best to help civilians flee the street. As the civilians evacuate, Ben sees Harvey try to make a run for it to which me knocks him out completely. The four then try their best to battle the monster but to no avail. Reed devises a plan with John to use one of their nukes to destroy the monster that if they could impale him with the blast, the monster will die from within but keep the blast minimal. Ben offers to be the one to impale the monster with Reed reiterating that if he does this there is a chance he could die. Ben decides to make the sacrifice. As he finds a giant steel girder, they strap one of the military nukes to which Ben does a dive-bomb on the monster and explodes,

As Ben walks out of the monsters inside, the team congratulates him for his sacrifice and do not see him as a monster but as a normal human being. The city and world celebrate that the Fantastic Four are still alive to everyones disbelief. John Doe grants them their lifes back and freedom as Reed returns to the Baxter Building. As he takes the rest of them along with him, he asks to be world superheroes now since the world is used to them now. They all agree as they continue to use their hero name as THE FANTASTIC FOUR.

AFTER CREDITS

Dr. Doom is seen on his throne already aware of the Fantastic Four's heroics, with Morgan giving him a rundown of what the Fantastic Four had done in Latveria by letting the civilians go. Doom assures he still maintain law through fear, he looks over to his machine that appears completed only with a gateway now to which he plans to enter into the other world.

CAST & CREW
DIRECTOR: MATTHEW VAUGHN

There is only one director who I think is capable of handling this project of mine and that is none other than Matthew Vaughn. Movies like Kick-Ass & Kingsman have not only shown that he is capable of providing serious tones mix with humor, but also to breathe great memorable characters for audiences to remember. Fantastic Four heavily needs that, not to mention his kinetic sense of directing action scenes to which give a sense of hyper-realistic as noted in the church massacre in Kingsman. If anyone were to direct this, it would be him!

REED RICHARDS/ MR. FANTASTIC

LEE PACE/GEORGE CLOONEY/KARL URBAN

All three actors exhibit the sense of humorless but yet brilliant and interesting Reed Richards. With this movie you need a strong male lead who honestly has never been a real true lead in for a movie, which makes these three perfect (aside from Clooney). Lee Pace gives off the perfect Reed Richards vibe of showing incredible intelligence but does not give the vibe that he is total boredom and gives off a charm. Clooney while older exhibits an older Reed and well groomed Reed that could work but a maybe for my story. As for Karl Urban he posses the need to give off great energy as a lead, something he has yet to have accomplished well, with this role he may get the job done perfectly.

SUE STORM/INVISIBLE WOMAN
MARGOT ROBBIE/CHARLIZE THERON/ALICE EVE

Not only are these woman drop-dead gorgeous but they no doubt could not only pull of the acting that is necessary but have experience working in big-budget movies like these. Sue Storm in the movie is a character who is waiting to just jump out of her shell, these actresses prove that they can do such thing while also kicking ass on screen. Not only would it be an interesting character, but it could prove an origin for woman empowerment for herself who goes from being a protege to someone who can handle her own.

BEN GRIMM/THE THING
BRUCE WILLIS/VIN DIESEL/CHRIS PRATT

Not only do these three actors posess the physique to pull off Ben Grimm, but they can manage to pull of the heart and drama that The Thing suffers of an everyday life. While Bruce Willis is someone I can't imagine seeing as Ben, he can be someone with dramatic elements, not to mention he could cater his northern accent perfectly especially New York. While Vin doesn't seem like the right skin color, he seems like someone who could have a heart of gold due to the personality of just being Vin. If he can deliver that on screen, his interpretation would be solid. As for Chris Pratt he has already proven himself to be a versatile actor ranging from a comedy star to action, a blend that would perfectly for him to be Ben Grimm/The Thing.

JOHNNY STORM/THE HUMAN TORCH

TARON EGERTON/DYLAN O' BRIEN

Not only can these two actors can play hot-headed and funny, but they also have experience in heavy action films. Both them starring in potential franchises like Kingsman & The Maze Runner both have the potential to give The Human Torch a nice refresh from Chris Evans. Not much to say for them, but both of them have the chops to be the characters.

VICTOR VON DOOM/DR. DOOM

MADDS MIKKELSEN/COLIN FIRTH/CILLIAN MURPHY

Of all the evil badasses in the Marvel Universe, this is one that deserves perfect casting with a grade A quality actor to pull this off, these 3 not only pull off great acting skills but can no doubt play great villains for our protagonist to try to wrap their head around. Mads already has his resume set up with Casino Royale & Hannibal, Cillian Murphy with his impressive take on Scarecrow. As for Colin? If you watch Kingsman, this man displays the right attitude on what Dr. Doom should be. He is very calm, charming, but yet has a dark diabolical side that is shown very little. That dark side only shown in the church scene is a perfect example, but his acting is shows true promise to bring Dr. Doom the right quality actor we need. He was always my first choice.

MORGAN LE FAY
EVA GREEN/ANGELINA JOLIE/MARION COTILLARD

Not only have these actresses played the most evil vile woman on the face of this Earth, but they have the beautiful dark characteristics of Morgan that is needed to be portrayed in order for this to work perfectly. Eva Green has already played a backstabbing woman in Casino Royale or a dangerous warrior in 300 Rise of an Empire, not to mention Angelina in Maleficient or just her look in general or even Marion's "evil" in The Dark Knight Rises or even in an Inception. These woman have the right idea of what it is to be evil while still stay true to the beauty and evil of the character.

HARVEY ELDER/MOLE MAN
TIMOTHY SPALL/DANNY DeVITO

We all know Mole Man is a grotesque human being, so having these two characters play disgusting and ugly is no hard job for them. Spall has played Peter Petigrew, easily a slave to his master but also a vile looking man only the type of guy to follow his masters order. Danny gives off the intimidating small tough guy look, especially when he was the Penguin but I think thats what makes him good for the role of Mole Man. Sue he has a small role, but the truth is he can come back anytime and these two actors would be perfect for that.

JOHN DOE

TIM ROBBINS/MICHAEL KEATON

As a made up character specifically for the movie, I wanted two great actors who really could put control on the Four without even putting their hands on them. While not really a villain, he is sort of a threat to the Four and a messed up human being for allowing them to be lab-rats. These two actors can portray douchebags perfectly.

CONCLUSION
Overall I am beat by this long put together editorial. I hope you all enjoyed my pitch for my Fantastic Four movie, a man can dream. If it is well liked, I may consider making a full screenplay so that way everything I have ever envisioned in my head for the movie is put on to paper, for now this is the best I can do without script format. Thank you for reading, Thumbs Up appreciated!

Nice article, @MrSotoMan! I still would have preferred an older cast. But I'm looking forward to seeing this.

@MrSotoMan first of all, I call bullshit on you seeing the new Fantastic Four. Nothing personal.

Secondly, I thought the story sounded super cheesy and I would never ever want to see anything like that on screen. (Also: proofread. It was a mess to read at times)

Thirdly, I did like some of your casting and your choice of director.
I think Vaughn could make a great Fantastic 4 easily.

I'm not too sure about your picks for Reed or Sue as they felt kind of generic.
Plus Clooney is way too old, Charlize is great and all, but she needs a better character than Sue. On top of that, Pace was in Guardians, Robbie is going to be in SS and the DCCU. Urban and Eve could have been alright, though.

Willis for Grimm is pretty cool, might be too old though. Pratt is a no (not only because of Guardians) and Diesel? Hm, I'd give him a chance.

I'm really indifferent about your picks for Johnny. I like both actors but neither feels like Johnny to me. Also, a bit young compared to your picks for the other characters?

I do like the idea of either Mikkelsen or Murphy as Doom and all choices for Le Fay is somewhat solid, with Green being my favorite.

Mole Man? I don't know the character that well but Spall seems like the better choice to me.

John Doe needs a better name but both actors could kill it as him. Good job.

No time to read right now, but I've bookmarked it for later. Gave you a thumb because your articles are always quality.

And I know you're not bullshitting about having seen the new movie.

@MrSotoMan

Sure, comic books can be pretty cheesy. Doesn't mean the movies should be. And I do think this story is pretty cheesy. Sounds a lot like the previous Fantastic Four cheese fests. Personally, I don't even want to read anything that similar to that.

And I didn't just mean that Clooney is old in general, he's way too old compared to his suggested co-stars. It makes your whole pitch come of as rushed.

I buy Willis and Diesel as Grimm, just not Pratt. Sure he is a likable guy and he could have been a football player, but I just don't see Grimm in him.

Me mentioning Pace's and Robbie's previous/current involvements with CBM was not to say it couldn't happen. It was too add weight to my claim that some of your picks is rather generic. I mean after all, 17 out of your 21 suggested actors/actresses have previously been in/or is going to be in CBM's.

Duh, Johnny Storm is supposed to be the youngest. But there's a limit. Imagine Fox actually went with your pitch, and then picked Clooney, Theron and Willis. Who would play Johnny? A 23 year old O'Brien? A 25 year old Egerton? At best, that means our Johnny would be 15 years younger than Sue. And Sue would be 14 years younger than Reed. A pitch needs to be thought through.

And I get why I you picked John Doe, I do. The name doesn't matter, but why use a name that is so obviously fake? That's just begging for trust issues. Agents pick generic code names, but at least they pick real names.

And property of the government? How? They've never encountered beings like these before, how would they know how to contain them properly? Plot hole.

I'm just trying to give you some constructive criticism, no hard feelings.

The cast is alright, I'll read the story later.

P.S. @MrSotoMan Margot Robbie just turned 25 so I guess more than just your Human Torch casting is under 30.

Interestin cast, a tad older but I like them. Would love to see George clooney in another CBM, he would have been a great older Batman if he hadn't already starred in the awful one.
TucksFrom2015
TucksFrom2015 - 7/7/2015, 6:47 PM
This is simply ...alright, not even in the same league as the average screenplay bouncing around, and the 3 act structure ...isn't one despite it being labeled that way, there's no rising action or legitimate character arcs, just a game of connect the dots between iconic moments. But why does every F4 pitch need to focus so heavily on the familiar, trodden path of their origin story? Is that even fun to write? Like... doesn't it just feel like a chore at this point? You're wrong for thinking that any story is inherently cheesy, I mean have you seen that Power Rangers fan film? You could've done something different like that, anything other than the 'status quo' if you wanted to make this worth reading.

I can't even comment on your cast, or rather a series of vaguely defined shortlists ...which is an astonishingly lazy tactic by the way, since it doesn't have any real consequence who you pick ...none of this really add up to anything concrete. You would think someone who's seen totally new versions of these characters would have a more inspired interpretation of Doom than a guy who consorts with a midget to put a monster in new york. This reads like an episode of Adventure Time, the ice king puts them in separate cells with their commlinks, then they use their commlinks as soon as they wake up and then leave the castle. Oh .. my ... GLOB!!!

kong - 7/7/2015, 7:17 PM
Please proofread next time, that's all I ask. And the frequent use of "to which" makes it seem like you were trying too hard to make it sound mature.

I basically agree with Tucks.

The story, from what I read, wasn't anything new or refreshing. And tucks wasn't saying the story was familiar because it was an origin story, but it was familiar because the origin wasn't changed. You realize he's worked on a screenplay for a F4 origin film for like a year now?

This was an wonderful article. I can't knock anything until I can fully taste, see, and smell the product. Anything else is just being Bias. Your casting choice is superb. Though I would wish that they would have cast a bit older, I still have to give this movie a chance. Keep up the good work my friend!

TucksFrom2015 - 7/7/2015, 8:35 PM
@MrSoto Yeah you'll have to excuse me and my bullshit, all the best and better luck next time is what I should've said. Maybe choose your villains more wisely and make sure the plot fully pans out around one focal point, so a Mole Man movie can take place on Monster Island, or under New York, a Diablo movie takes place in the South Amercian jungles, a Namor movie in Atlantis, or a Puppet Master movie pitched as Night at the Museum meets Avengers. In fact, stealing elements from other movies is kind of how pitches works, comparing the tone to something else gets readers involved in visualizing it. I compared my screenplay to District-9 meets Dead Space meets Mass Effect, Trank compared Kinberg's screenplay to Spider-Man 1 & 2, and David Cronenberg films.

kong - 7/7/2015, 9:21 PM
I believe you're mature. It's just I've read comments by you better than your pitch, so it was jarring.

And it seemed like you were overcompensating, especially when the use of things like "to which" didn't make sense.

I will definitely say that you need to do serious proofreading on this. At times I was wondering if English is your first language.

As for the pitch itself, parts I actually liked and parts I hated (that's a compliment. I normally hate every part of a fanboy movie pitch. They're usually stupid.) I liked how everyone got their powers, and the battle with Doom. I didn't like the idea of the U.S./CIA basically holding them hostage and this John Doe guy evidently considering them to be government property. We've already seen that with Gen. Ross and the Hulk. Plus, quite frankly, I get sick of always seeing the army and/or CIA being portrayed as evil. I also dislike using Morgana and this Godzilla-like creature. It's been done, as had the whole sacrifice with a nuke bit. Have Doom attack New York himself somehow, maybe with a machine that would send the whole city to the Negative-Zone. As for your cast, I'm kinda meh. I'm ok with having Reed being quite a bit older than Sue (I've dated women 10-17 years younger than me), but I think Johnny should be closer to her age. Charlize Theron is too old for Sue, but the others could work.

Honestly, although I loved them as a kid, I could live without anymore Fantastic 4 movies. I kinda like what they're doing in the comics, using some of the characters in other titles. So I would personally like to see Marvel get the rights, and the use Sue and Johnny in some other way. As Inhumans maybe. Ben and Reed, I don't really care about.
