Sony's JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE Could Charge Past SPIDER-MAN 2's Domestic Box Office Total

With another $9.6 million projected, Sony's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has its sights set on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 to become the company's second highest-grossing title at the domestic box office.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues to topple the superhero genre. After beating out the likes of Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to name a few, Sony's reboot/sequel now has its sights set on Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2.

Welcome to the Jungle pulled in $2.2 million on Friday night and is on track for a three-day weekend total of $9.6 million. This would bring the film to a running total of $365.4 million, well within striking distance of the studio's 2004 superhero sequel Spider-Man 2 ($373.5M), which starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker. Welcome to the Jungle, which features Dwayne Johnson, has already surpassed the superhero blockbuster on the worldwide charts, but is now looking to become Sony's second-highest grossing title domestically of all time.

"This momentum smells like it’s set to topple Sony’s Spider-Man 2 ($373.5M) to become the studio’s second highest-grossing title stateside after Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man ($403.7M)," Deadline projects.

Of course, it's not guaranteed and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle would need another solid weekend following this one to achieve the new milestone. Regardless, the film has been quite the surprise hit for Sony, raking in a worldwide total of $860.8 million. It helped boost the studio to a $93 million quarterly profit and has also become Dwayne Johnson's highest grossing film domestically to date.

Suffice to say, Sony is already working on a sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

I thought at best it would do just OK. I never expected it to be making this much.

Also, am I the only one who noticed this was kind of a more kid-friendly version of Kong: Skull Island?

I still can't believe that this movie is doing so well. I saw it and thought it was ok enough, but not that spectacular.

I liked this movie, but the script itself is very average, but the lead actors make the most of it. My teenagers really enjoyed it. I thought it would do good, but not this good. It reminds me of Jurassic World, okay but not on par with its massive box office.
