GI Joe 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick gave this explanation for the next Joe outing.

“We can say that we will be faithful to the first film,” Reese explained of their plans for the sequel. “We will not be ignoring events from the first in the second.”

“It will be a sequel,” added Wernick. “It will be a continuation of 'G.I. Joe' [as it was established last summer].”

“It’s hard to think of it being any bigger; that was a big movie,” Reese said of any pressure to top the first film’s massive action sequences. “They blew up a lot of stuff. We hope for it to be as fun, that the characters really pop. We’ll be introducing some new characters.”

“We’re going out to Pawtucket, Rhode Island to the Hasbro headquarters next week,” Wernick said, explaining that the trip will help dictate who those new characters will be. "[We’ll] talk to the toy guys, take a tour of the facility, see all the old toys, the new toys and just get inspired.”

head out to MTV for the whole article.

Say what you want about G.I. Joe but me honestly I enjoyed it. The movie may not win any Oscars but it is a sure winner to this child of the 80s.

we get it.
there are explosions needed in a film franchise such as this.
we also realize that this is based off a toy line.
but would you mind actually giving the fans some story that doesn't sound like it was ripped off a soap opera?

I also liked the movie, so I'm looking foreward to the next one.

To tell you the truth, I actually have NO idea why people hated it.

Scarlett and Ripcord continuity will remain???

The characters don't need to "pop". We need to be able to connect with them.

Epic fail.

Despite that, I was still dissapointed by Transformers: ROTF; it was dull, boring, unfunny, and way too long. The only parts I liked were when the Decepticons destroyed those aircraft carriers and when Sam tells Bumblebee that he can't come with (and he gets sad).

I liked that part because I kinda felt sorry for him and his facial expressions reminded me of my (now dead) dog Copper.

i think in most of the movies mentioned above they focus too much on action, and not enough on story, plot, and characters. they also focus on cheesy comedy, and that is why films fail they need to be well thought out, with no holes,no cheesy comedy and well placed action scenes, but above all the story, acting, characters, effect, and plot must be the focus for a film to be good and work.example tranformers was done great then the second one was made and was nothing but explosion, and cheesy comedy think about it.

If they wanted to make this better they'd get new writers. That could have and should have been an awesome movie, but that lame-ass story and writing killed it. I don't think it needs a reboot, just a writer whose head isn't lodged in his/her own ass.

RedDevil - 2/17/2010, 5:24 PM
The reason why ppl hated it, well for fans of the G.I Joe story, was due to it's lack of faithfulness to the characters. For non G.I fans it was fun with the action scenes and crappy dialog. I would like to see a sequel but with more accuracy to the characters and better dialog I mean seriously, Baroness, according to the movie, an American when she is a russian in the comics and her stupid dialog, "Everyone get out, get out! Nice shoes." fail.

Yeah, and you know what else?:

Expect Thundercats to get defecated on as well in the SAME F***ING MATTER. Just you wait, like how Rex was CC, I bet Liono will actually start off as a kitty cat then become human/cat-like. Why are all these 80's cartoon movies blowing SO much chunks?

Everyone HAS to admite:

Snake Eyes and Stormshadow were the best parts of the whole movie. Seriously.
McLovin
McLovin - 2/17/2010, 6:25 PM
I dare anybody will dispute that statement BryEl. Though I will say the only minor problem I had with Snake Eyes was his mask. But the suit looked great and the fighting scenes were awesome. Everything else sucked major moose cock.

MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 2/17/2010, 6:43 PM
The fighting scenes were the best bits..but they were still crap! They just seemed cool because the rest of the movie was so mind numbingly shite. Did you see the cartoon that came out after? Resolute? Thats how you do a Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow scrap!

A brain-dead, nut-less monkey could write, direct, and act better than everyone involved in GI Blow.

ScottScottScott - 2/17/2010, 8:15 PM
@RoR - Resolute came out a good 3 months before the Live Action Movie, they were web-episodes, and cut into about 7-10 minute segments. They had them on Adult Swims Website, after all the episodes were released on the web they then showed it in entirety on Adult Swim, still before the movie came out. It wasn't mainstream released until after the movie came out however causing people to think that it was created after the Live action when in-fact it came before it. and now you know and knowing is half the Battle. ;)

You're saying that the dude who played Destro can't act Tyler? That's a bold statement.

Most movies without a good plot bother me, but for some reason, this movie didn't bug me nearly as bad as RotF did. This movie wasn't a mess as much as it wasn't accurate. All they had to do is make everyone look like they originally looked like from the cartoons/comics and poof, fanboys would be happy. GI Joe isn't much of a deep plotted idea anyway. It's all espionage, that's it. Which is fun, and that's all it is. People are looking too much into it. And the only thing I cared about was Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander and I got half of the two lol. Snakes was bad ass (I didn't like his huge mouth section of his mask though). Commander just needed his old school helmet and the movie would have done so much better on that alone. That would have been the last thing anyone leaving the theater would have remembered. They'd be all giggly and credits. Decent reviews. But they didn't. He looked nowhere near anything I have ever seen Commander look like. They could have AT LEAST done the whole hooded mask thing as the default backup plan to the old school helmet, but no, we get plastic see through mask? lol. What?

InTylerWeTrust - 2/18/2010, 12:26 AM
Vital: No, I meant that a brain-dead, nut-less monkey could write a better script, direct a better movie, and give a better performance than anything that went into the makings of GI Joke. If you replaced everyone in that movie with said monkey, the movie would have turned out better, because the writing was embarrassing for Smallville standards (burn!), the directing was a mess, and the acting was an abomination on cinema.

Heh heh ...GI JOE 2: Return of the Dark Horse of the Summer
Phinehas
Phinehas - 2/18/2010, 2:00 AM
GI Joe had the emotional depth of a teletubbie episode. Yet, with that said, even teletubbies had more to offer in terms of breadth of scope with its characters and story development. Teletubbies may be able to make the case that they have contributed if only a little bit to the improvement of mankind. Whereas the makers of GI Joe: RoC deem it necessary to burden us with a sequel to their mockery of good cinema.

BryEl
I have to disagree with you on your ThunderCat comment for two reasons.
1. Its not product driven by Hasbro.
2. WB is the studio that owns the rights.

Those two reasons alone give enough hope to the possibility that ThunderCats will get a treatment more suiting to which it deserves. That is, nostalgia of a former child, and the adult intellect of that said child.

Top 3 things that would be preferable to sitting through GI Joke again:

3)Crucifixion

2)Sitting next to Michael bay in Hell for all eternity.

3)Watching ROTF again.

Ror: You're absolutely right about the excremental origin of the script for the Joe movie. If ever there was a franchise that NEEDED a reboot, GI Joe is it. You also have a good list for preferable things to do over watching it again (and even once is too much!). The sad thing is that for many years, I wanted to see a Joe movie. Their costumes were ordinary clothes. No way to mess that up. The characters could all easily be played by real people. No way to mess that up. The interaction between the various Joes, each with a unique set of skills that ultimately contributed to their success, was so natural that it left a variety of directions for a movie to go with a really interesting story. Hard to screw that up.

Yes, we had a can't-miss franchise with all the right elements for a series of awesome films. Somehow.... the ball not only got fumbled here, it was run back 80 yards for the winning touchdown. This is why I'm personally so bitter towards this film. These guys take a great formula with unique characters, and turn it into "generic paramilitary force film #247". And somehow, despite being a failure at the box office and in DVD sales (every store here has plenty in stock, right where they've been since they arrived), a sequel is being made that will NOT try to reboot the franchise and give us a movie faithful to the classic series and comics of the 80's? Got one word for this: FAIL.

This movie needs more than a tour of the Hasbro Toy Facility to help it. They need to have LARRY HAMA and not these two guys write the sequel. I think he would be able to fix this franchise up with an engaging story and character history that is spot on accurate. That's all I ask, but as we know it won't happen thanks to Hollywood.
